What are the rules for a 5cc? And what advice can be given? I want to try this after my current game.

I don't know about other people, but for me, OCC is easier than 5CC, even though you can play 5CC like an OCC. I guess the mindset is different in a 5CC and you don't try for the 20K, so you need to focus on other stuff.

Such was exemplified when I lost my SG Tomo2, a semi-OCC DG... we lost the mentality of an OCC and warred too much for too little and lost... although I can beat OCC DG fairly easily.

Anyway, 5CC is basically like a peaceful, builder's game, with metropolises, wonders, and shiny stuff. Just play it like a regular builder's game and focus a lot on trading and keeping everyone happy, and space your cities far apart.

The 5 city challenge looks good. But what i would suggest as a slight alternative is to disable the abilty to build settlers (so it cant be done by mistake) and that all civs start with 5 settler units. It will be a drain on your money straight away so you cant wait to long to build those other cities.

I'm doing a monarch 5cc right now as Korea, except I have 6 cities. It's a very easy builder game. I just started the Modern Age and I have so much money that I am able to support almost as many military units as I would if I were playing a normal game.

I made it through three ages with out war. I just now declared a war so I could raze two mongol cities to allow my cultural border to expand. The games go fast when you dont have many workers working or units fighting.

A better spot is worth more than a few gold piece in my opinion.

Anyway, that would give you a completely different game. It eliminates the "feel" of a 5CC and becomes more of a "City-state" type game.

O i agree entirely but times not on your side that 10 gold you start with wont last long. Not with me as i max out the science. It just means that you cant max out for a few turns but you easily get back once those cities are founded. What i wass thinking would be intresting is if a group of us on here tried this 5 city challenge game but we all use the same save game file from turn one. That way its a totally level playing field and would be intresting to see how other peoples games develope. Complete with write ups of course.
Ive played a few games with a few of us all using the same first turn save file and its pretty intesting to see how different the game often plays out.

I guess you could start with a little more gold, like the conquest class in GOTM I guess.

Personally I like the standard 5CC. You get to scout the land and try to claim as much territory as you can whilst delaying those settlers to try and claim both iron and horses if at all possible. That delay in pushing the limits of waiting for IW/The Wheel to come in against the tide of AI settlers is part of the early fun.

As I write this I'm wondering if I've tried it with C3C. Resources are much more scarce and the need to move at least one city during the game would be greater. I feel that I need to try this again soon. Thanks for opening this thread Sandman2012-I've neglected this variant far too long!

I haven't done a 5CC in so long too! I need to try another one.

Anyone up for a mini-GOTM 5CC, with no real competition, just friendly comparing?

I like the standard 5CC, since sometimes it's a struggle just to get five good cities.

That sounds like a great idea! I'm finding it difficult to find enough time to play civ but now that my team's SGOTM has finished I must be able to squeeze this in somewhere. I must finish the current COTM first though. I know that you don't play them anymore, Tomoyo but my failure to complete the last GOTM gives me my first ommision since GOTM16 and I'd really not miss Deity games. (The current GOTM is a different matter though!)

If you are really serious about this, maybe with staff approval we could get a variant site up and running either in the GOTM or Stories & Tales areas perhaps?

Sounds great to me. I think friendly compaing is the key to it being fun. As simple as did you civilization survive ? Yes.. Well i guess you won then no matter how well/poor the others did.

Perfect! I am really keen on this (if you couldn't already tell :) ) What level/civ etc? If we make it not too high in difficulty we could attract a few more people like Sandman2012 that have never tried this before. BTW sorry for hijacking your thread, Sandman. Are you up for this? It seems like the perfect way to learn this type of game.

Well, the only benefit of having the competition associated with CFC is publicity. We could very well just do it informally. But having it tied to the GOTM would be wonderful. I'll ask now.

How about a 5CC for the next SGOTM? no promises!

Why not just start a thread in Succession Games?

I am interested in standard, continents, emporer, england. I was planning on playing this next time I start a game.

Wasn't it "non-competitive"? ;)

BTW if it was 5CC for the next SGOTM, I'll be in. :D

I'm afraid I'm not good enough to 'compete' in the GOTM but it doesn't stop me from participating. SGOTM4 (The Indian one) was a 5CC IIRC.

A thread in Succession Games sounds odd as it wouldn't be a succession game but maybe Stories & Tales would be a good place. I'd be happy with a GOTM placing but I agree that the emphasis should be on fun and sharing ideas.

So does anyone want to me come up with a map and a difficulty level now? England is the civ? C3C? Continents?

Sounds good. I am at wortk so I cant do it. C3C 1.22. Nothing harder than emporer please. Plus I just read somewhere that a non-scientific civ adds a level of difficulty anyway.
