SGOTM8 - Hydrophobic Americans. Maintenance Thread.

Welcome to the SGOTM 8 Maintenance thread. The purpose of this thread is to give you somewhere to post about non-spoiler issues relating to the game. It is a way of communicating to the rest of the players outside your team, and with the staff about matters that affect your team or everone. You can post about bugs, rule clarifications, problems with the roster etc. Please subscribe to it so that you are kept up to date with new information as the game proceeds.

The starting saves will become available on the SGOTM Progress and Results page on August 5, midnight, server local time.

Thanks go to Gyathaar for coming up with the variant and developing the map.

The variant is Hydrophobic Conquest. You are America, your goal is to conquer your archipelago world, and you are afraid of water.

The rules are simple:

1. You will build no boats. Seaborne units are all disabled for America.
3. You must win by Conquest. America must be the only civ standing at the end of your game.
4. Red and Gold Laurels will be awarded respectively to the members of the C3C and Classic teams achieving the fastest conquests.
5. PTW and Vanilla teams are not permitted to leader rush Great Wonders before 1000 BC in this game

Here's the start:

Map Parameters
Playable Civ - America
Opponents - Six, preselected
World size - 80 wide by 80 high. (Small)
Difficulty - Emperor [EDIT: delete ", or possibly Monarch. Subject to final play testing,"]
Landform - Archipelago
Barbarians - Raging

The map is handbuilt, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

Game mods:
- America can't build boats. The AI can.
- All victory conditions are available except Diplomatic and Spaceship.
- Settlers, workers, scouts, explorers, leaders, cruise missiles and tactical nukes can be loaded into helicopters.
- A side effect is AIs can load tactical nukes into any boat with transport capacity ... so beware :nuke:
- Bombers have lethal sea bombard only (lethal land bombard removed)
- Cruise missiles, stealth bombers and F-15 have both lethal sea and land bombard.

Additional change:
- C3C will use the same contact and map trading rules as Classic. Contacts can be traded between two civs when one of them knows Writing. Maps can be traded between two civs when one of them knows MapMaking.

The SGOTM Mediterranean resources are included in this game. If you have played SGOTM 7 then you will be ready. If not you may need to download and unzip a small graphics mod pack. Vanilla/Mac players need to install the GOTM mods. The best way to achieve this is to use the relevant All-in-one GOTM Installer for your OS, linked in my signature.

Please visit the following links to ensure that you are adequately prepared for this game. Vanilla players in particular should understand the late-game equalisation modifications that we don't often have to worry about.

The GOTM Reference Thread.
SGOTM Reference Thread.

Notes:

A. The Classic (Play the World and vanilla 1.29) versions of Civ3 AND Conquests version 1.22 (C3C) are all supported in this game. Because of the different game play, Classic and C3C teams will play for separate awards.
B. All teams must play the sponsored variant.
C. You MUST play from the start file assigned to your team. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

I think this one will exercise all your Civ skills - diplomacy, research, warfare .... I look forward to watching some interesting and creative play. Have fun :D

One quick question..... Can harbors be built?

yes, they can

before someone asks, it should prolly be mentioned that it is not allowed to use the airlift units anywhere and nuke anywhere with tactical nukes bug-exploits.

Also I believe GOTM rules disallows jumping capital to remote islands and then gifting away a city with lots of units in it in order to transport huge amounts of units to another continent/island

What? No airlifts? Can we only fight with paratroops?
You can airlift into airports and airfields as normal.. but there is a bug-exploit that allows airlifting units to anywhere on map.. even to seatiles and into enemy cities.

the same bug allows unlimited bombard range with tactical nukes (make them act as cheap, movable ICBMs)

But we can jump the palace to another island with the intent of setting up a second productive core there, despite the rank corruption bug in classic?
Yes or No?

Thanks.

Does the gift of the City allowed for transportation needs? Even for "native" Capital?

May be Gyathaar can make a list of what is banned and what is allowed for this game. Otherwise it might be rather confusing. Also, there is always a possibility of making the AI to declare on you, killing a few units and making peace in exchange for a city or two. Which then can be used to move the troops by abandoing the capital. That would be very difficult to arrange but still possible. We are talking Ancient Age conquest here, nothing less. Well, may be Middle Ages, depends on the map.

The bombard and airlift bugs are weird and unfortunate mistake made by programmers and certainly are not allowed.

To answer all of the most recent questions, iI'm prett sure it is forbidden in the GOTM to return troops to the capital by gifting a city. (Alan, please clarify; I think I'm right on this, but I want to be sure. And even if I'm not, I'm positive that it is forbidden to combine the troop-teleport with a free palace jump as akots describes.)

Simply acquiring cities on other landmasses through phony wars and peace treaties, on the other hand, is part of how the game is meant to be played, I think. Am I right, Gyathaar?

Getting cities for peace is part of the game and allowed

Jumping a capital for the purpose of mass teleports by gifting city is banned.

the other two I will leave for AlanH to give final answer:
- gifting city to teleport units back to home island.. my view is it is ok if it is just to rescue a city and units that you will loose in war if you dont do it, but not for mass transports.. but AlanH gets final word
- jumping capital to another island to make another core in classic versions.. my guess here is it is ok if you already have a certain number of cities there alread.. AlanH decides

1. Of course you can acquire cities anywhere in peace deals, however you got into the war.

2. You can jump your palace to another continent to develop a second core there. But you should not do so until you own enough cities nearer to your target capital than to the FP to constitute that core. Ainwood's stated guidance on this for GOTM is 'enough' = OCN/2. For this map that means you should have at least 6 towns/cities around the target new palace.

3. Unit teleportation to foreign locations by gifting or deliberately abandoning cities is not allowed. Gyathaar's "Dunkirk" retrieval option is permitted, but the situation should be carefully noted in your turn log.

Does this cover the issues raised so far?

Not having used Helicopters in Civ3 - for this game, what CAN'T be loaded on a helicopter?

Only foot units can be loaded into a helicopter. That includes the units that have been so designated by Gyathaar's mods, but not fast units.

Important Note The difficulty level will be Emperor.
