Dual install is pretty easy.

1. Copy "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in Program Files/Firaxis Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.52".

2. Rename "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in My Documents/My Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.52".

3. Install the patch.

4. Run from one directory or the other to get the version you want. You'll also be able to install mods separately for the two versions, save games will be separate for the two versions, etc. The new version will have a clean install with no mods, which is probably what you want (since many old mods won't work).
FYI. :goodjob:

... and if you haven't submitted your GOTM 5 save and replay files yet then make sure you copy them off to another directory before you upgrade, or you'll lose them.

Note that you can't submit them just now as there's a server problem under investigation.

Thx for the tips, expecially the last one!!
That was 24 hours ago. The server's fine now after a disk transplant.

does the #1 mean to copy the files to the my documents/.../civilization folder, where the custom assets are? and then rename this folder?

No. You can copy it wherever you like.

Note that these dual install instructions are for people wanting to run two different patch versions of Civ4 - not (say) warlords and vanilla civ4.

I've unstickied this thread - for most people, its not irrelevant, and they should just use the latest patch version for all games.

ok, I thought about making a warlords and vanilla game, but if it doesn't work then it's no point.
thanks alot for the quick answer :)

It's not a question of "doesn't work". You simply don't need two installations to run vanilla and Warlords. You'll be able to run either with a single installation

ahh, just got it, so I wasn't sure how it worked. Thanks again too both of you for your extremely fast replies :D
