I think thinking that a great doctor great people category should be added. They could decrease research times for a particular health-related technology by half, Join the city to Improve health by 3 or start a golden age.

Possible Great Doctors

Avicenna
Philippus Aureolus
Hippocrates
Galen
Harvey
Versallies
Morgagni
Virchow
Louis Pasteur
Taussig
Morton

I really do think great Doctors deserve there own category

That sounds like a pretty interesting idea. I wouldn't mind seeing Great Doctors included in the game. Although, maybe they need another benefit? Like, aside from joining a city to improve health and helping to research a health-improving technology. Those two seem like relatively small improvements in comparison to a Great Artist's' 4000 culture bomb or a Great Scientist's Academy or a Great Prophet's religious buildings or a Great Engineer's hurry production ability. I would do my utmost to avoid getting a Great Doctor just so I could get a GP that is more useful. Still, having Great People that improve health or even happiness would be pretty cool.

Hey Thracian, Sohan,

I have already implemented the Great Doctor check out my sig for the link to the thread.

cool.

Are they like other great people with famous names and uses eg. help discover a tech like I said

How about build hospital? Gives the city a hospital regardless of the era. Redundant later on though....

I wonder how you're going to get a Great Doctor. Where do the points come from?

I'm guessing things like Grocer, Granary, Acqueduct and Hospital would provide points for a Great Doctor, as all of them are partially or totally oriented towards health.

Not points for the Great Doctor. Employment for doctor specialists. Points only come from wonders (Red Cross jumps to mind).

It should probably be "Great Physician" because that's less colloquial than "Doctor".

As we know, Great People do one of three things:

1. Create Golden Age with one other GP.
2. Discover a tech.
3. Join the city: the Great Physician would be a BIG Health benefit, plus definately a Science benefit and maybe a Hammers benefit (healthy workers are productive workers) or a Happiness benefit (healthy citizens are happy citizens).
4. DO A UNIQUE THING. This would probably best be modeled as establishing an institution, called, for the moment an Institute of Health, or perhaps a Great Hospital, which would increase Health in that city by, say, 50-100%.

For the list of Great Physicians, you missed (in no particular order):
Maimondes
Jonas Salk
(arguable) Sigmund Freud
Benjamin Spock (no relation to our beloved narrator Mr. Spock)
Edward Jenner
Albert Sabin
Linus Pauling?
And, of course, my father ;-)

Maybe they could be sacrificed to heal your entire army to full strength and give them exeptional regenerative capabilities for X turns thereafter.

Only useful to those of us frequently at war. I've had entire games with hardly a war, so this would be useless for me.

Here is the description of the great doctor from my mod:
- Great Doctors that join cities give +2 to city health, +3 to research
and +2 to culture

- Citizens specialized as doctors give +1 to city health, +1 to research
and +1 to culture

- Units in the same plot as a great doctors have a very small
chance that they may be taught one of their skills. Players are
notified when a unit is taught a new skill by a great doctor.

- Great Doctors that join cities provide cities with at least double
extra production, research and culture points than regular doctors

- Great Doctors can build the military hospital building in cities to increase
city health, happiness and healing rate.

- Citizens specialized as doctors provide cities with extra production,
research and culture points

- Great Doctors can build the field hospital plot improvement, this new
plot improvements provide medical support to damaged units.

- The following buildings now provide points towards generating a great
doctor:
- Red Cross (1)
- Military Hospital (1)

- The following buildings now allow the citizens to be specialized as
doctor:
- Red Cross (3)
- Hospital (2)
- University (2)

- The following buildings now provide free doctor:
- Red Cross (2)

- Military Hospital:
- Heals units 15% extra each turn
- Required to train combat medics
- Can only be built by great doctors

- Field Hospital:
- By default increases unit healing by 15%
- Can only be built by Great Doctors
