WOTM 01: Carthage

Game settings:
Civilization: Carthage (Leader: hannibal; Traits: Financial & Charismatic)
Rivals: 6
Difficulty: Noble
Map: Continents
Mapsize: Standard, flat world!
Climate: Arid
Water level: high
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Victory Conditions: all enabled

Hannibal:
Hannibal is Financial and Charismatic; starting with fishing and mining. Financial allows +1 commerce on any tile producing 2 or more. Charismatic is a new trait in warlords. It gives +1 happiness per city, 25% less experience points for promotions, and +1 happiness from monuments (the new name for obelisks) and broadcast towers.

Unique unit: Numidian Cavalry
The Numidian Cavalry replaces the horse archer. Whilst the standard horse archer has a strength of 6, the Numidan Cavalry has only a strength of 5, despite still costing the same. The difference is that the Numidian Cavalry gets a +50% bonus against melee units, and starts with flanking 1.

Unique building: Cothon
In warlords, in addition to each civ having a unique unit, they also have unique buildings. For Carthage, it is the Cothon, which replaces the standard harbour. The Cothon, like the harbour, allows extra health from crabs, clams & fish, as well as increasing trade route yields by 50%. The difference is that the cothon also gives the city an extra trade route.

Adventurer Class bonuses:
  1. Start with a worker.
  2. Start knowing agriculture.

Challenger Class Equalisers:
  1. Start knowing no technologies

Yeah, fisrt got it. Good effort ainwood, this looks like a fun one.

Woo! Now I just need to decide whether to play the HoF or the Warlords save :)

Mmmmmmm. Not got Warlords. Said I wasn't going to get Warlords for a while. But. but. but ....

Nearest PC World is about 15 mins walk away. Probably open for another 45 minutes.

Decisions....

I downloaded the HoF Contender version and later this evening when the kids are on their way to visit Mr. Sandman I will bust out my best Ray Milland* impersonation (substituting something else a bit healthier in place of alcohol, of course).

*The Lost Weekend.

I haven't played games of the month before, I think I'm going to try this - the start looks good anyway. Just to be clear, I just download the savegame and play from there, and submit the savegame the turn after I lose, right?

Edit: Also, if I play on contender and find it too hard or too easy, am I allowed to try one of the other ones? I assume not, so I don't know what's on the map.

@airny: according to Dianthus and Denniz, Warlords doesn't have a pop-rushing bug to begin with, so there was no need to try to fix it. So....nope, no bug :)

@Kevin J: yes, or submit it after you win ;)

I've owned civ 4 since the day it came out, and I've yet to finish a game. I always start over . . . I don't know what it's like to win a game of civ-4. I still haven't got to modern ages . . . Maybe the competition aspect will keep me motivated to finish a game!

And man, this is gonna be hard . . .no save spamming? I think shift-f5 is the most common key combination I use with this game . . .

You can save the game as often as you like. You just can't reload anything that means you're replaying any moves.

Well, the beauty is that you are free to play any saves as many times as you'd like. BUT, you are only allowed to SUBMIT the one game you played under the rules of the event, and that is the initial game play, warts and all.

If you are like me, after you finish the initial game under GotM rules & conditions, you may want to go back and see what you could do to improve your gameplay. This is done on your own, and can never be submitted as a legitimate game.

I also think for the spoiler threads it is only ethical to post about what events happened in the actual event game as opposed to using info gleaned from multiple tries.

Well, played up to 500 ad, time for a break . . . do games ever go fast when not on marathon mode.
Moderator Action: Sigh! Rest of the post deleted. No posting in pre-game threads once you've started the game

How long does it usually take until the first spoiler thread? I want to see now what others have done!

The first spoiler thread is going to be September 20th, but until that time one is not supposed to post in this thread or the pre-game thread IF they have started play.

I certainly understand you excitement, however, and I am sure no one wants to squelch your enthusiasm, but don't be surpirsed if you get a little swat across the wrists for posting that you have been playing. I am thinking this is a no-harm no foul situation, but I appreciate the staff going by the letter of the law.

I don't start playing until I am certain to have a lrge block of uniterrupted time as I often sit and stare at the screen for extended periods at the beginning of the game. Also, I like reviewing what some of the other (& better) players are planning and many times I even crib some of their strategies (but can never get them to work as well! )

Ahh, well no more posts for me then. At least I didn't reveal anything of the game.

I've modified one of the files associated with Warlords to fix the problem that causes that horrible static noise. That's not going to be a problem for WOTM play, is it?

It hasn't been tested to my knowledge, but if you try loading the start file you'll know immediately if there's a problem, as you will get a protected assets error message.
