Here’s the starting position. I did not reroll or anything, this is the first roll I got. The start seems strong because of that gold mine, and I hope it is, and I feel guilty rerolling for a position without a gold mine as much as I feel guilty rolling for a better start. I only hope we’re not alone on some island.

Note: No Blake’s AI this time. I don’t feel confidant using it because I feel it’s far from being complete, and implications coming from some of the changes that are done are still very unclear.

As for settling. I’d actually vote to move settler 1 NE because, there are no sea resources nearby, and I’d like to get that gold for capital. One water tile will be left out but I don’t think its important. Not my final decision.

Let’s relive the history as the greatest military genius that ever lived, and hope we have a little more luck than we did last time. ;)

Dificult decision. We can settle in place to keep as coastal or on floodplance, which not coastal and waste floodplance but get gold in fat cross. Thurd option is plain hill north. Plain hill get gold, + 1 shield, same health initially, but not coastal (less health) and cost one turn. We have choise of moving scout on plain hill or gold hill.
Plain hil show potential city site, gold will show potential second city site of we settle in place.

I can not choise, settle in place or plain hill. I like coastal capitals.

So, I think first thin we need to decide, do we move scout on plain hill or on gold?

Without the bonus markers it is really hard for me as a lurker to judge the position. Is that simply forest, or corn at the southern edge.

Is the scout sitting on a pigs tile?

At least you have enough food to use the gold tile most of the time. ;)
Gold with nothing but dry grasslands is tough.

Plain Hill was my 2nd choice. however, i like 1 NE most because

- much better production (all those grassland hills east; maybe not enough food east so some of those hill would be wasted unless they are in capital)
- more forest (at least 4 compared two only at least 2)
- no sea resources so having capital on coast is less important

Capital should be strongest city in the game for most part and 1 NE seems to give more production and food.

well, your problem is that we do not see what we have if we move settler on plain hill.
So, where do we move scout, plain hill or gold?

One reason why I am not to insistant on getting gold to capital is becaus edesert hill gold is not that good tie to work all the time, especially if one use whip or need food for something else.

Second city can stay at size 1 and work only gold for a long time, untill even build granary and got a food tie improved. That why I consider settling in place, but I do not know how good second city looking.

One more point, if it is too many floodplance around plain hill tie settling in place become more attractive to devide unhealth and make betetr use of floodplance.

the gold in on plain hill not desert hill, but i agree with you that gold won't be worked the whole time especially since we have lots of food around and are philosophical and i see ourselves hiring scientists rather than working gold, BUT it will still be our best tile for a long time. I also suggest we move scout on gold rather than that plain hill. I am also in favor of having one monster city rather than two weaker ones.

I actually think we should move scout to the forest NW of the settler to check for seafood, so we don't end up looking stupid if we move inland and there turns out to be a fish there.

You migth be rigth, as we can see only 2 specials, and other specials useally not under forest/floodplaince.

So lets say there is a sea resource there after all. Would you still settle in place, or grab that gold, and simply leave sea resource for other city to the west?

lurker's comment

Gotta agree with uber here, check for seafood and if it is there, settle in spot. Otherwise I would probably move NE. With four floodplains and pigs and all those hills PLUS gold, I think this city would be a waste to run specialists. You can get sick hammer production very early in the game (well, once you get to HR but with gold that might not take that long).

lurker's comment: This may be just me ... but even with seafood resource, I'd still settle NE and make the capital a very early powerhouse ...

one of the reasons i vote NE is because it will be moster production city with beaurocracy. Even if theres sea food there id still go 1NE.
lets wait for theRats and mark's suggestion b4 i play.
knowledge of fishing is not waisted in any of the cases.

Lurker's comment:

Settling on the spot has three benefits which i see.

1. We get the most out of the land we have. Capital NE would mean that any other city which grabs the (imaginary:) ) seafood _may_ not have many good tiles except the sea food. But we _do_ know that we can get two good cities if we settle on spot.
2. the sead food ressource can be worked much earlier than the gold.
3. Capitol on spot has more food. (sea-food + pigs + 3Floodplains)

1. Even with only seafood, it can work scientists since we'r philosophical it won't be bad at all.
2. Not much earlier.
3. More food (from what can be seen), but much less production. Much much less. :)
