I see this message in messages now close to 2 years back. They don't seem to appy in my situation. (I am running NTFS.)

I recently installed BTS.

I wanted to play the GOTM 26 for Vanilla.

Clicked on the save file to load - had to change disks (BTS was in). Second time, it started, but ultimately arrived at that message.

Tried starting Vanilla from another save file & it just quits and gets the MS "encountered error and had to quit" dialog.

Tried starting vanilla from desktop and it does the same thing.

Any help appreciated!!!!!!!

Have you patched BTS up to 3.13, and vanilla up to (1.74 now IIRC)? Do you have the latest HOF mod for vanilla? Have you added any other mods to vanilla or BTS that might have changed any assests?

The BTS 3.13 patch changes one of the dll's for vanilla and warlords (I think because those dll's in the gold edition were different, and that needed to be made compatible). GOTM 26 is expecting the post 3.13 dll's.

Here is some info to help you sort out those dll's: (Based on a Vista system, your results may vary  )

Pre 3.13 Vanilla dll is 3624 KB

Pre 3.13 Warlords dll is 3772 KB

3.13 Vanilla dll is 3630 KB

3.13 Warlords dll is 3,778 KB

Path to the Vanilla dll replacment site is "Computer > OS (C) > Program files (x86) > Firaxis Games > Sid Meyer's Civilization 4 > Assets > CvGameCoreDLL.dll"

Path to the Warlords dll replacment site is "Computer > OS (C) > Program files (x86) > Firaxis Games > Sid Meyer's Civilization 4 > Warlords > Assets > CvGameCoreDLL.dll"

Hopefully this will help.

If you installed BtS, but did not patch it to version 3.13, then the problem you are having is a result of not having the post-3.13 DLL for vanilla. Try updating BtS to version 3.13, then attempt to open GOTM26 again.

I've received this message when trying BOTM, and I don't know what to do. What makes it particularly weird is that I can start a new game (with the appropriate options) and it's perfectly fine for HOF use. Could anyone please help?

Yes, I do have 3.13, Bhruic's patch on top of that, and HOF newest.

ADDED:
It's Bhruic's patch that's the problem. Unpatch it (as in, put back to old .dll) and you should be good to go. The patch shouldn't be needed that badly anymore since HOF include Bhruic's fixes.

OK, I'm confused. What does the BtS 3.13 patch have to do with Vanilla?? There was a file that I had to copy into the Vanilla directory a month or two ago in order to play a GOTM.

Since Vanilla won't even start, I'm thinking of doing the following...
Uninstall BtS
Uninstall Vanilla

Should I check directories (which ones) to make sure stuff is gone? Probably want to keep the stuff in ..\My Games\*.* ??

Install Vanilla
Install Latest Vanilla Patch
Install latest Vanilla HOF Mod
Install BtS
Install Latest BtS Patch
Install latest BtS HOF Mod

In that order?

What about Bhruic's patch??

Thanks a bunch!!

The BtS 3.13 Patch updates the vanilla-assets-DLL-file :crazyeye:

This means that because you installed BtS, the DLL you replaced one or two months ago was re-replaced by the installation.
And because you didn't patch to 3.13, you have an older DLL now, and that won't work ...

Patching BtS to v3.13 should resolve your Vanilla-problems :D

I am pretty sure I patched to 3.13... How can I tell? (I'm not at home right now.)

Bhruic's patch is included in the BtS HOF mod, so don't reinstall that.

You can tell you have patched to 3.13 in BtS by going to look for updates, and see if it finds anything...if it does, you need to download it. That after the rest of your steps SHOULD make it so everything will work again.

Or you could just check in 'About this build' (= Submenu of 'Advanced' in the Main Menu). It should tell you "Civ Versions = 313" if you patched ...

I experienced the same problem. I figured it was because I had replaced the BTS DLL file with Bhruic's patch DLL. I did this for multiplayer games since HoF doesnt seem to support multiplayer.
So I replaced the Bhruic DLL with the original one and it worked.

Maybe this is of some help for you. :)

I haven't got BTS but having the same problem. I'm running the latest patches & HOF 1.74.002 & still get the same message when trying to load GOTM26. I've uninstalled all the HOF's & then reinstalled only the latest version & still no luck

You need the new DLL-files from the BtS-3.13-patch ... even if you don't have BtS :crazyeye:

Files are here

To the best of my recollection, I had done the following:
- Installed Vanilla (a long while back)
- patched Vanilla once and then again to the current (1.74)
- installed HOF mod (1.6?) and the later one (1.74)
- Installed the files needed to run HOF games on vanilla after BTS was released
- Install BtS
- patched BtS to 3.13.
- installed Bhuric's patch
- installed HOF mod for BtS

Symptoms:
- trying to start a HOF game for Vanilla got the original message.
- trying to start Vanilla fails. It won't even load.
- Trying to start BOTM fails in a similar manner to the original message (but I did not write THAT one down.

So, my thought was to uninstall Vanilla & BtS and REinstall everything.
Used Control panel to uninstall BtS & Vanilla. I kept the Save Files & Replays. There were a few files left in \program Files\Firaxis so I deleted it. The only thing left in ...\my games were my save files and the replays.

Then I re-installed Vanilla and attempted to instal the patch - I got This message:

"The setup detected that version 1.09.000 of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is already installed."

Arrrrrgh!!! Any thoughts appreciated.

try going to Gamespot and downloading the patch from there...the in-game patcher has issues with updating past a certain point.

You may need to install the 1.61 patch before the 1.74 patch though

Do not install Bhuric's patch when you get back to the latest versions of everything.

I was running the 1.74 update from an executable downloaded from the CIV pages....

I tried the in-game patcher on the off chance that it might do better - after about 15 minutes of doing nothing - and COMPLETE LOCKUP, I powered off and back on my PC... They should remove it if it has issues like that.

I'll try the 1.61 - which is on the Gamespot page...

Right. I was not going to do that, but thanks for the confirmation.

I also tried Installing BtS, but it failed with a message about installing a patch

I'll try again in a day or two.. I have a meeting tonite - which will keep me out of the house until nearly bedtime....

Is there some stuff maybe left out in the registry?? Is there a cleanup process? Maybe a complete purge program??

Thanks!

Been gone for a long time and wanted to play GOTM for a while but then encountered this problem also. I even uninstalled completely my Civ4 then deleted its folder for a clean installation but still encountering it. I tried replacing also the DLL file on the assets folder of the HOF mod folder with which ChrisFromLux gave but still unable to load... I'm only using Vanilla same as dannybe. Hope I can still play GOTM26 before deadline...

The DLL you need to replace is not the one inside the HoF Mod. It's the one in ...\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\. Do not change any files inside the HoF Mod.

See my post #2 in this thread for the exact path to the dll replacment site in Vista (which should be a close approximation to the path in XP).
