BOTM 09: Russians

Game Details:

Game settings:
Civilization: Russian (Leader: Stalin; Traits: Industrious, Aggressive)
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Immortal
Map: Inland Sea
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Cold
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Epic (And yes, I've made sure there are 750 turns... :mischief:)
Options: No goody huts, no vassal states.
Victory Conditions: all enabled

Stalin:
Stalin is Industrious and Aggressive, and the Russians start with the hunting and mining. Industrious gives +50% hammers when building wonders, as well as double speed production of forges. Aggressive gives a free combat I promotion to all melee and gunpowder units, and allows double production speed of barracks and drydock.

Unique unit: Cossack (replaces cavalry)
The benefit of the Cossack compared to the cavalry is that it receives +50% against mounted units. This is in addition to the usual cavalry abilities of: A powerful 15 strength, 30% withdrawal chance, and +50% AND flank attack against cannon, trebuchets, and catapults. However, neither cossack nor cavalry get defensive bonuses.

Unique building: Research Institute(replaces laboratory)
Like the laboratory, the Research Institute gives an additional 25% science in a city, gives +50% spaceship part production, and allows one citizen to become a scientist. The additional benefit of the research institute is that it also gives two free scientists to the city.

Adventurer Class bonuses:
 1. Quick farms: You start with the knowledge of agriculture.
 2. Worker: Just so you don't have to wait before building a farm, you have a worker (sharing a tile with the settler)

Challenger Class Equalisers:
 1. No scout: Yep. Disappeared.
 2. No techs: Guess what. Yep. Your people know nothing at all.

To Enter the Competition:

You just need to get the starting saves here and start playing. Use the same URL to submit your completed entry, which you must do by 15 September 2008.

Civ version

This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Warlords or vanilla Civ), patched to version 3.17, and using the HOF mod version 3.17.001. Note that this is a newer patch and version of the HOF mod than previous BOTMs.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Please use this Saves Available thread for any technical queries, eg. if you have trouble opening the game, NOT for discussions about what happens in your game.

and correct some things, like no map size or Adventurer bonus description

oh go on, pick my posts apart, do :p:p.

I've fixed the starting date on the first post of this thread. Correcting the stuff on the main GOTM page is harder as some of that is generated by a script. But I'll get AlanH to do it and then claim the credit. And then all your puny posts will look all wrong :lol:

May all three of you get conquered in 3500BC when you play BOTM 09

OK. I'll take the blame for the failure to update the 3.17 references and the map size - template errors. Now done. :goodjob: DS :)

...
-BTS is installed on my 'D' drive.
-I have disc 1, but since I moved I can't seem to find disc 2 to install BTS on my 'C' drive.
-copying BTS from one drive to the other doesn't seem to be recognized as 'installed', even though I can play BTS off the C drive. (I know it sounds fishy, but it is actually 100% legit)
-The patch seems to want to upgrade the game on drive 'C', and doesn't notice the installation on drive 'D'
-I don't have this problem with Warlords. Then again, Warlords doesn't have a new patch.
-The HOF mod seemed to install ok...

What should I do?

Did you try to install the patch while the files you'd copied were still on the C drive? If so then maybe the patch saw those files and that's what screwed it up - try removing the files and then installing the patch. FWIW my civ and BtS installs are on my E:\ drive and the patch installed fine, which implies the patch can normally cope with Civ being on a different drive.

Or: If you really want to use your C:\ drive copy: The reason copying the files by itself doesn't work is probably that Civ creates registry keys that in effect tell itself where it is. If you haven't changed the BtS key, then it'll still be pointing to the D:\ drive. So you could change the registry key. (At the command prompt, type regedit to start the registry editor. Go down the tree to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 - Beyond the Sword. You'll see that the data value of that key is your install directory - that's what you need to change). That may work, though I wouldn't want to guarantee it as fiddling with registry keys isn't something you're normally supposed to do. Make sure you note exactly what you're doing so you can change the key back if it doesn't work.

Thanks for your prompt reply!
Additional details: My 'D' drive was my 'C' drive at the time I installed BTS, so you'd think copying it to the 'C' drive would put it into the 'default' configuration, but apparently not..

-Is the in-game 'check for updates' option supposed to work for this patch? It says it detects a patch, but it doesn't install, whichever drive I load the game from.
-So I took your advice and deleted BTS from the 'C' drive, and tried the patch. It didn't install, it still thinks I don't have BTS installed. The 'D' drive version of course may still have registry information that says it is located on the 'C' drive.

So, in light of that, is there an option that doesn't include messing with my registry keys? I want to avoid doing that if possible.

EDIT: I got over my fear of changing registry keys. So, no bts on C drive. Registry keys on D drive changed to point at the D drive. I changed Warlords and Vanilla on the D drive in the same way. Still, the patch says it doesn't detect bts installed on my computer. Darn, now what?

If you follow the instructions in the Vista fixes (specifically, if you mark Civ4BeyondSword.exe to run as admin), then BTS will no longer launch.

It might be possible to work around this by setting Steam itself to run as an admin, but I couldn't really recommend circumventing all the security for your PC for an ever-increasing set of third party programs.

(It's iffy enough to ask us to run a mod that we are specifically not permitted to know the contents of as an admin!)

Ummm, I'm not sure how much more I can help :(

If you're using the in-game update option, I'd strongly suggest you don't but instead download the patch and try installing manually instead (I'm not sure if you're already doing that?) The in-game update often seems to have problems reported on civfanatics.

Other than that, have a look through your registry keys to make sure there's nothing there and nothing you've changed that might confuse BtS? (Also check there's nothing either in the registry or the file system that might give an impression that the patch is already installed - I know that's not the error message you're getting, but it's not unknown for commercial software that's confused about something to give the wrong error message)

Unfortunately if I was at the point you were at, I'd most likely just trash my entire BtS install (uninstall it, then go through the registry and file system to make sure all traces of it have actually been removed), and then reinstall BtS from scratch, and if that doesn't work, do the same thing for Civ then BtS. Unfortunately I guess that's not an option for you because you've lost your install disk.

There do seem to be some issues with steam :( - unfortunately I don't have steam and don't know enough about it to comment. You might want to check out the HOF mod and tech support threads.

Well, strictly speaking, you're not allowed to know the precise contents of any of the software on your machine (other than open source stuff), due to most companies' commercial sensitivities ;) But I understand your point, it's not a situation we like, but there from a technical perspective, there doesn't seem to be any other option. The HOF mod is in a rather different situation from most software since some of its code is specifically designed to detect and report instances of in-competition cheating. Clearly, for people who want to cheat, that means it has to deliberately work against what the person who installed it is trying to do, which is what leads to the technical difficulties and ultimately to the requirement for higher privileges.

Hopefully the fact that the HOF mod has been in use for so long by so many people does confer some degree of trust.

DS: I wonder if it would make a difference if I made D: the 'master' and C: the 'slave' drive, adjust the registry, etc...? Someone else did the install for me, can you advise me on how to do it myself?

I also need som ehelp here,
installed the patch 3.17 : ok
installed solver's patch 3.17 v0.19: ok
installed HOF mod 3.17 : ok,

Option locked assets : ok

Can load the mod, canstart a gme with the mod, BUT when i try to load the BOTM 09
(challenger) I get the following message :
The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that assets in you mod folder have not been changed ...
and then comes "Load failed"

Any Ideas ?
Asset Checker 2.1 gives me 23 files which do not match, including in HOF Mod, but also for example CvGamecore.dll, but I am not sure if it is up to date or not ...

Any ideas ???

Thanks in advance...

installed solver's patch 3.17 v0.19: ok
Could be the reason. Don't worry, HoF mod incorporates all the fixes.

Re-run HOF Mod 3.17 install ..
no success.

Any other advice ? (until now I had had no problem with any patchess, updates or mods....)

here the result of the Assetchecker (v2.1) :

BTS: Assets\backup_before_solver_0.19\CvGameCoreDLL.dll ,<-- Error: Extra file
The clue may be to remove your "backup before solver" folder. But ....

BTS: Assets\CvGameCoreDLL.dll,<-- Error: Files do not Match
In my experience, once the AssetChecker has found one error, it often goes off the rails and lists a lot of others that are not real. However, your reinstallation *may* not have replaced solver's dll, so try reinstating it from the backup folder before you delete the folder.

DS: I wonder if it would make a difference if I made D: the 'master' and C: the 'slave' drive, adjust the registry, etc...? Someone else did the install for me, can you advise me on how to do it myself?

It doesn't seem very plausible to me that which drive is the master and which the slave would make any difference.

Assuming you mean doing the install of the patch, you should go to the Civfanatics patches page, from there choose a link to download the 3.17 patch, save the patch somewhere on your local drive (doesn't matter where, but would make sense to put it somewhere you can remember in case you need it again in future), and then run it when it's downloaded.
