Hi everyone and welcome to the TSG10 After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

Please also state your HoF score.

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay). The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the closing date.

Good Luck and have fun! :hammer:

Fun game. My main strategy was to raise CKNs then beeline rifles after astronomy to upgrade everyone and finish last civs.

But things went a bit worse than i thought...

Spoiler :
When i explored in the beginning, my scout and warrior got stuck behind Siam north of me. Wasn't sure if we were only 2 on same continent or not. But he denounced me somewhere in 1000 BC....hmm ok. Some land right of Siam must lead to other civs. But what to do? I raised archers. A lot of archers. I signed only 1 RA obviously. But machinery was still 12-15 turns behind when i finished my army. Well i attacked him anyway with only 1 warrior and 1 horse with them. Lost 2 archers but i think i made the good decision.

Spoiler :

Killed Siam entirely. When i got Machinery, i upgraded to CKNs. My horse discovered India, Russia and Mongols. I had no time to lose. I lead my army to India and attacked him immediatly. He died. Piece of cake.

Spoiler :

Meanwhile, my main cities have built some extra CKNs, and i built the Great Library to get Astronomy. Rush buyed a caravel, and army began to walk over Russia. Took 2 turns to kill his capital.

Spoiler :

Swimmed down south of Russia to see the Mongols.

Spoiler :

Meanwhile, my caravel encountered Persia and Greece on another continent. When i realized this another continent was west of me and saw Greece capital, i built up a second army.

Spoiler :

Encountered Japan for the first time. He was south of Mongols. But what a surprise when i saw his army!

Spoiler :

Hmm. I had to lose some units. Wanted to split army somewhere and send some units to Persia but i had to keep everyone grouped. Finally took his capital.

Spoiler :

Meanwhile, my second army swimmed to Greece and said hello.

Spoiler :

I've sent too much units to Greece. If i had knew this, i would send some directly through Persia's capital to save a couple of turns. Upgraded CKNs to rifles are the most awesome unit in the game imo.

I upgraded the last CKNs from Japan. They had alot of buffs accumulated through ages. They were the best riflemen of the world. +40% rough, +40% open, +25% siege and double attack move... they swimmed north to Persia's capital.

Spoiler :

I juggled some turns around Japan as well. I probably could have saved a dozen of turns if i knew more precisely what i needed for last turns of war.

Edit : Submission page doesn't work.

For some reason I cannot access the submission page :(
I'll attach my save here, hope it works.

I also got stuck behind Siam, did not meet India or Genghis until i broke through Siam with LSM. I did not leverage my UU, not a single CKN fired a shot
I think I wasted GL on CS slingshot, it worked but it took too long to start warring. Should have went for astronomy i think. Never tried that though.

India and Russia were a cake walk, as well as Greece. Mongols and Persia both repulsed my initial attack (mostly rifles) had to retreat and wait to upgrade to Infantry. Japan was last to fall, used mylast GS for Mech Infantry so that war lasted only 3-4 turns.

I think i need to explore faster and build/tech with my victory condition in mind next time. Fun map.

Please try the upload system now, appears to be functioning normally again. :)

Thanks to whoever got it under control. :thanx:

I just downloaded Maxym's save and submitted it using the submission page. It worked fine for me, and Maxym should have received an acknowledgement email from the system. I haven't changed anything.

If you are still having problems, please can you say more about what you see? One person says "It doesn't work", another says "Can't access the page". Are those different descriptions of the same symptom, or different symptoms?

Tabernak appears to have submitted OK.

This was a very large and cumbersome map to work through a domination victory. So... didn't finish until 1912 for the grand finale after nuking three Greek cities to soften up for a landing in 1906.

Historically, Siam was first to fall, then Russia, then India. Mongolia, Persia and Japan were all best buddies, but I had to knock out their capitals and a few other major cities to keep their forces down. Happiness was always an issue in this game and had to gift several cities to India and Persia who were the most peaceful and friendly with me even after I conquered them.

I was at war with Greece probably 1/2 the game, very stubborn with his terms for peace, and his forces were always matching my technology and repelled invasion after invasion. So, in the end, I nuked his three closest cities including his capital and landed and took Athens to end the game. :)

Only five submissions to date, but I already see others beat my time, so I should have done something differently...:(

Good game, but at one point I thought Greece was going to win since they had Nukes 20 turns before I made my first one... and their army was twice the size of mine. Good thing they didn't take advantage of their superiority! :D

Domination Turn 189 1290AD Score 3156

Decided to try the Cho-Ku-No rush strategy as discussed in the Strat-Forum. Made two deviations:
1) Waited till turn 60 for RA signing; Poor Production Starting Location. Getting to the resources meant destroying hammers as well. So with all things to build for the rush I delayed 10 turns.
2) First SP I signed was Tradition. Wanted to expand as quickly as possible, to get Hills in workable city space ASAP. To develop the Spices we needed mining & calendar, so why getting a free worker so early, with no work to do.

In hindsight I could have signed RA’s in Turn 55. BTW, when I signed at turn 60, none of the other civs had the required money to sign, so I had to gift them money to get the RA’s signed.

At turn 90 I had ~1700 gold. Enough for 3 CKN’s and an upgrade of the Archer I built.

After getting my 4 Cho-Ku-No’s and 2 Horsemen I first took Belgrade, then Siam (left 1 town), India (left 1 town), annexed Delhi, Russia, Mongolia (left 1 town), Japan.
Researched Astronomy, bought 2 galleys in Delhi & Beijing, discovered Greece & Persia who were at war ;-). Build GW and Kremlin to prevent having to fight these. Greece and Persia only had pikes.
Bought 4 CKN’s and a Knight in Bejing, sailed over and took Athens. With my old army I sailed over to Persia. Landed on West coast and took one city and Persepolis that had a 32 strength, which took my vet CKN’s 3 turns to tear down.

Money was never an issues in my game, I ended up with ~4500 in Cash. Happiness was always around zero, with long periods running negative even up to -25 at one time. I finished with -17

Conclusion: CKN Rush strategy works. If I would have cranked out only CKN’s and Horsemen after turn 90, researching only up to Astronomy my finish could have been much earlier.

Man you guys are fast!

I never built a second city. This strategy works very well for adopting social policies, but relies heavily on your opponents having nearby cities worth puppeting so you can expand quickly. This seems to work well for me on deity, but took a while here on emperor while I was waiting for Siam to expand.

I was feeling pretty solid the whole game, due in large part to the insane growth rate of my capital city. I was up to 32 population by game end! This brought in loads of cash from trade routes, which I used to buy off all the city-states and purchase endless amounts of units. By game's end I had active armies on 4 separate fronts! I didn't sign a single research agreement, but I was still able to tech up to infantry and artillery by the time I invaded Greece and Persia.

Looks like I'm going to have to cut more corners next time if I want to remain competitive. ;)

Spoiler :

Question to Tabarnak:

Why did you still build a couple of cities, while you could have annexed?

Question to nthexwn:
Why did you have your city grow to size 32? I had issues with happiness whole game so I stopped Bejing at size 10 and my annexed city Delhi I left at size 9.

Didn't you have happiness issues? Or did you raze more than I did?

I ended up with 14 Cities: 1 of my own, Belgrade, 3 from 4 Siam, 1 from 2 India, 3 from 3 Russia, 3 from 9 Mongolia, 1 from 6 Japan and 1 from ? Greece. Most of them I kept because of the luxuries and the iron. BTW, only Russia had 1 iron source within their borders at the time of their defeat.

This is why I like social policies so much. With Monarchy, Military Caste, Theocracy, Cultural Diplomacy, and Freedom I was able to puppet 23 cities and still remain in the green! I didn't raze any of them. :)

Why did you still build a couple of cities, while you could have annexed?

I built cities before entering Siam's territory. With only 1 city i couldn't build an enough large army for some timeframes(some players like a small and well trained army, but CKNs can attack twice, raising XP a lot more and they can get buffs more rapidly. Maybe it's my multiplayer's style approach. In such games, quantity wins over quality). With 3 good produciton sites(buffed with early Landed Elite), i could regulary send new troops to keep warfare at a good pace(no waiting and fast kills). Annexing cities imply buying courthouses or hard build them. Can be a pain for happiness. I accumulated gold exclusively for new troops and upgrades.

General Strategy:
- Social Policy: beeline Honor's Professional Army, for earlier LSMs (build Swordsmen, travel first then upgrade in friendly border, ie. AIs Open Border)
Spoiler :

Bottleneck seems to be Military Units' travel time, not Tech speed, thus picked Honor line
- 1st level: +25% vs Barb = 2 instant heal promotions
- 2nd level: +10% without having to build barrack and delay fielding 3 LSM
- 3rd level: unwanted units spawned by Military CS can be used to increase happy
- 4th level: 50% off upgrading fee means Earlier LSMs and Rifles

- Tech Beeline: NC => Steel => Civil Service => Education => Astronomy => Rifle
- $ income: finance via peace treaty from 1st and 2nd target Civs; bribe other civs to war
- max grow Capital until all hammer tiles can be worked, then max production
- assign Engineer Specialist for a GE (to rush PTower), with Oxford, opens early Rifle

Spoiler :

1. NC beeline
a) Worker build first (tech AH: possibly reveal horse tile for bonus hammer)
- improve Cow tiles for Earlier NC
b) Warrior build (then Paper Maker, National College)
- protect Capital surroundings with these 2 warriors
Spoiler :

2. Settler (grab Iron)
- tech: Mining/Calendar/Iron Working
- improve Lux to sell to Siam
- ally Belgrace with 500G then DOW Siam
- Siam sends all his units trying to take Belgrace
- Chinese Warriors on standby to cleanup
Spoiler :

- recapture and return Belgrace Worker vastly improves relationship
Spoiler :

- goal: gain +GPT from 1st War to finance upgrade (Warrior => Swordsman => Long Swordsman)
Spoiler :

3. Great Library for Steel
- tech Steel manually if fails
- not too bad because NC is already up
Spoiler :

4. 1st Capital Captured: Siam
- tech: Construction/Math/Engineering (I made a mistake here wanting to do RA combo, would be better to do Civil Service/Education, forces Military CS to pop only Swordsman or Longswordsman)
- build: Workshop, assign Engineer Specialist when it's complete
- GE is used for PTower (GS) with Oxford, unlocks early Rifle
Spoiler :

- leave Siam with a city is ok; potential RA partner
- goal: Finance Military Upgrade
Spoiler :

5. 2nd Capital Captured: Russia
- tech: Civil Service/Education
- build: finish Workshop, spam Swordsman, upgrade when Professional Army is avail
Spoiler :

- for 2nd War target: take Capital + 1 or 2 cities (staying above -9 unhappy)
- if more than -10, sell cities for +GPT
- aim for cities with Lux, duplicates can used to bribe Civ 4 to war Civ 5 while the player is warring Civ 3
Spoiler :

6. 3rd/4th/5th Capital Captured: India +Mogo + Persia
Spoiler :

- tech: Astronomy
- builds: Swordsmen/Universities/Oxford
- bribe Warmongers DOWing other Civs with spare Luxuries
Spoiler :

7. Greece + Japan
- AIs on par with Tech, delay attack till Rifle
- save Money and Happy Cap in case need to Rushbuy Units in Cities near Japan and Greece
Spoiler :

Hey Airey long time no see! Great game dude congrats! :king:

My summary:
- NC then second city to the north, to grab the iron + marble
- Killed Siam (T98) with 3 swordmen and one C-K-N (first error was to delay this attack so much)
- Took Moscow (T134) with 3 Swordmen and 2 CKN
- Upgraded to LSM. I took Delhi on T147
- Went for the Mongols (bribed Japan to help me) and took the capital with 4 LSM + 3 CKN; T171
-Then I upgraded to Riflemen (here I used a GE to get the PTower at T167 but forgot about the Universities in a few cities ---I annexed Moscow--- and hence Oxford, so Rifle came at t180
- Then went for Japan. Kioto was captured on t190
- My major error was to think that we were in a Pangea map (Some time fractal maps are a kind of pangea). So I went too late for astronomy.
- But finally I bought two caravels, met Greece and Persia and took Athens with 8 riflemen and 2 cannons (T217).

It is nice to see sub T200 games with either LSM or C-K-N armies. I think my mixed army would be close to that, had I not delayed astronomy and the first attack.

THANKS Alan for uploading it. I was trying to upload it as I knew i would not have access to internet for a while and did not miss deadline :)

Nice one! Just got back from my vacation and tried this GOTM. Domination is my favourite and this was a quite fast one.

Noticed, that Belgrade was near me, so strategy was to get it ASAP with 3-4 warrior. Building order was warrior-warrior-library-NC. I was able to steal 2 worker from Siam. Also, I could conquer all of his cities with warriors.

Went to Longswordsmen really fast and got the whole continent with 5-6 of them. I lost about 10 turns or so, because I thought this was a Pangea like map, so I had to wait until I got Astronomy.

Wow, you guys are fast! I was just happy I won after Alex nuked Beijing and knocked my economy back down.

Spoiler :
I did the NC start and then tried to beeline CKNs. I don't think I'm very good at "beelining". I keep sidetracking myself to pick up the quick, easy, cheap techs and end up costing myself 20 turns. Need to work on that....

Anyway, got my CKN army and took out Siam. Worked my way east and took a couple of Mongol cities, took his peace offering (no cities) and then took out India. The Mongols had a pretty good sized army when I went back to them so it took a while to slough thru them to Karakorum. It helped somewhat that Japan was at war with him too. After I took out Genghis, I then went back north and rolled Catherine. I'm sure it cost me many turns because I had to move my army all the way up there to do it. Once she was gone, I divided my forces and sent half down to take Japan and the other half back to Beijing area to push Alex off my continent. He had founded 4 cities by that point.

Just before I took his last city south of Rio, he nuked me. That slowed me a bit as happiness was always an issue and now gold was too. I built a few destroyers and launched west to his continent. Catherine still had one city there connected to Vienna (which I bought away from Genghis) so I landed there with 4 fully juiced (extra range and multishot) Rocket Artillery, 4 mech inf, 3 AA guns, and two modern armor. I rolled through Persia in about 4 turns and then turned south to Athens. It was a little tricky getting to Athens cuz Alex nuked a couple of my newly conquered Persian cities knocking out a few units but I got a couple of the Rockets in position and those along with a battleship, 4 destroyers, and two Stealth bombers made short work of it when I got there.

Fun game. I made a few mistakes along the way that cost me a few turns but realistically, I think I just start way too conservatively and it ends up giving the AI a chance to get ahead of me. I also think (scratch that) I KNOW I give the AI way too much respect as far as warring. Whenever I fight I end up rolling him but I go into each battle trying to protect every piece and probably take too long to attack the city. I usually let my ranged units pummel the thing down to 1 before I attack with a land unit. I just LOVE getting those ranged units juiced though...:)

Anyway, thanks again for putting this together. I always enjoy struggling through to victory only to find that the rest of the world is getting there in half the time...:D

FYI--I had two restarts from crashes somewhere in the early 200's I think but, once again, I'm not winning any medals here so I don't think anyone cares....

Domination is my favourite and this was a quite fast one.

Wow, you guys are fast!

Cheers to mcmpan! Awesome finish date dude!!! :goodjob:

I agree, that was a damn fast one.

I wonder if i can push enough CKNs to get same results when Astro is done, or if i really need upgraded Warriors to LSM somewhere. Only CKNs can be really tricky if you face too much melee units. I almost lost my army to Japan because of this. But sooner the better.
