My first unit is ready to go...

Unfortunately, saddle clothes are not civ-specific in attack, fortify and death animations as palettes would have messed up if I had changed these (my flicster doesn't work correctly). However, it still looks fair enough (for me) in the game.

first, some preview...

And here's the zip. It does not include any pedia files.

The unit might be used as cavalry of the age of rifles, like ACW cavalry (I would use it as Union cavalry, as the Confederates still preferred fighting mounted). I would add it a good defense rating, as Union cavalry carbines were superior in close-range combat. And of course, with their horses they were very mobile, so increase movement points as well.

EDIT: Credits go to Wheel Gator for his Boer rifleman and to Kryten for his horse :goodjob:

Dismounted Cavalry

Yes, we have real Dragoons now (or US cavalry). I gave up the idea someone would actually make it.... and then YOU came !

Thanks !

Cool, a Rifle/Inf/Cav/Horse mix!

Confederate Cavalry actually fought dismounted quite a bit (a good example is Spotsylvania, where Fitz Lee's troopers fought dismounted briefly against Warren's entire Union corps).

Nice graphics though, I'll use it in my ACW scenario, you get full credit.

Fortunately they did! It could have been as disastrous as poor Farnsworth's charge at Gettysburg against Confederate flank if they wouldn't had fought dismounted.

Well, perhaps you are right, Confederates usually fought dismounted, at least against infantry. My point actually was that the Union troops had more advanced armament (as some Confederate cavalry units used shotgun as their main weapon, along the sabre), and were better trained fighting on foot.
Grand cavalry vs. cavalry battles were rarely occured, but when they did, they were fought usually mounted.

Thanks! :D Use at will!

Looks Good :)

Great job. If it isn't too much to ask, could you crank out a horsed artillery unit now? That would be sweet.

Certainly not! I would love to. However, I need to make some kind of limber to which the cannon is attached.
What size should I make it? I was thinking of two horses and one cannon, but if I'll do that it wouldn't match Krytens artillery battery. In this case, it would be considered as light artillery (well, they were fewer in numbers in a real battle, so in this case they could do). Any thoughts?

Yeah. Don't worry about the limber so much. Two horses together with the standard artillery cannon from the game in tow would look good. Then when it's in fortify or fire mode have one of the horses stationed behind it so you'd remember that it was horsed artillery. Sort of how you have the horses in this unit standing behind the rifleman when they are firing. I would consider it light artillery for sure, in a game, I would make it less leathel than larger artillery, but give it a move of 2 so it can be used to support light infantry and calvary in quick hits.

The horse is krytens, but good work anyway, I was hoping someone would do this.

Are you sure that is Krytens horse ? I think you'll find that Kryten did a cut n paste job on the original ...... and that's exactly what Elsilhe has done.

So if a cut n pasted 'original horse' becomes 'Krytens horse' then a **** n pasted 'Krytens horse' must in turn become 'Elsilhe horse' !! :crazyeye:

I agree that its good work by Elsilhe though !

Yeah, this is a cool unit, but the civilization specific colors don't work so well? :( One reason I don't use any of the "Chin" soldier units from Kinboat is because of that.

Yeah, about the horse artillery, I'd like to see that, too. Two horses dragging a cannon is fine. Also, like said, they usually had lighter cannons - being that their use was in their mobility instead of their raw power.
