Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 38
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the thirty-eighth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Domination. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled, but the results will be posted with fastest finish by Domination victory and then all other VC listed below by fastest time.

In this game you will play as Oda Nobunaga and lead The Japanese civilization to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at King difficulty and at standard pace. Domination victory is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until July 15th to complete the game and submit.

Sorry, appears that Mac players do not yet have their patch, sorry about that.

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time. :nono:

Civ V - TSG38 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Oda Nobunaga - Japan
Number of AI Opponents: 8
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: King
Game pace: Standard
Game options: All Game options are disabled, including promotion saving. Quick Combat is disabled (You can enable it by using the in game menu.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 version 1.0.1.674. The submission system has been updated to accept it, but please report any problems that arise, as the new save format is significantly different.

In this game, you will be playing as Oda Nobunaga, you possess Bushido. Units fight as though they were at full strength even when damaged.

You can train the Samurai, which replaces the Longswordsman. The Samurai is as powerful as the Longswordsman, but it receives the Shock1 promotion automatically giving it a bonus when fighting in open terrain. Success in combat with a Samurai has an increased chance of generating Great Generals. You must discover the technology of Steel and you need the Iron resource to build it.

You can also train the Zero, which replaces the Fighter. The Zero is a moderately powerful air unit. It is like the standard Fighter except that it gets a significant bonus when battling other fighters. It can be based in any city you own or aboard an aircraft carrier. It can move from city to city (or carrier) and can perform missions within its range of 8 hexes. You must discover the technology of Flight and you need the Oil resource to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 15 July 2012.

The Save can be found here.

With the release of G&K tomorrow, please let us know if you have problem loading or playing this save.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, effects G&K have on vanilla.

Good luck and enjoy your initial experiments with G&K.

Yay that looks like a juicy starting spot! Seaside, mountain (although with Dom we might not need it for an observatory?), marble for wonders and lots of seafood.

I'm wondering if it's worth settling on the land bridge to the east, to be able to access the southeastern sea as well? Or is that just a noobish habit of mine that I should get rid of? It would sort of waste the cow or stone resource though...

thinking the same thing , seb. But in this case - longer to get marble, wasting improvable resource, losing observatory.. probably not worth it.

if needed another port on the south ocean can be built. Im betting its only a small peninsula on at least one side anyway.

Since my game is now running just fine, I'm also thinking it might be good to go in offline mode until this game is over, in case the "fix" aint so "hot"

Please note a change to the game announcement.

The submission system has been updated to accept the new patch version, but please report any problems that arise, as the new save format is significantly different.

The Zero would be useless even if the game lasted long enough to get it, which it won't. There's also a slight problem with Samurai: for a steel-rush, you want to have an army of swordsmen ready to upgrade. With promotion saving disabled, you have to choose either to gives the swords Shock I (in which case the free promotion is wasted) or Drill I (in which case your units can't specialise properly). The best that can be said is that a Drill promoted unit with the free Shock promotion is less vulnerable to being caught in the open en route to its target. The UA, on the other hand is very strong.

The start position certainly has plenty of resources, but it doesn't look great for a sword-rush. Pyramids start perhaps? Also, it looks like it might be an archipelago, which míght slow things down. Is that a tiny river to the west of the settler? I'll probably settle in place in any case.

Cannot be played on the Mac.
:thanx: corrected the release page above.

Hope we get you guys back soon. :please:

I heard G&K is being released for Mac on the same day as Windoze?
How did they miss the patch? :dunno:

Hey Thresian,
might be an archipelago
I agree, or some other kind of isand map.
Leif probably put us alone on an island as well! :)

Is that a tiny river to the west of the settler?
Don't think so. Just wishful thinking on your part?

Seems the Mac patch is now available, I was able to load the game and begin playing.

Cannot be played on the Mac.

Loads up for me. I have bought the G&K expansion, and my Civ5 is upgraded to version 1.0.1.674.

What stops you from playing it? Does the save appear in your list of Single saves in the Load Game screen? Does it fail when loading?
