MacBook Pro Retina crashes constantly...

You know that place by the other place...
I just purchased the new MBP Retina and Civ5 crashes within minutes of starting the game, sometimes seconds, and it doesn't seem to matter what resolution I choose. I just installed G&K in the hope that it would rectify the problem but no such luck. I haven't tried boot camp to see if it works there yet. It normally just crashes out to the desktop but some times it completely locks up. It might be something wrong with the new MBP's since Parallels also doesn't seem to work and they are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it as I post this.

So, is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

I actually haven't had any problems with Parallels at all, but I'm also using the 2880x1800 resolution.

However, Civ 5 with all the updates from Steam blows horribly. I used to play it on my previous Macbook Pro 13" (slowly with red checkerboards toward the end), but it doesn't like to work at all on my Retina. It won't set the 1920x1200 resolution at all. Crashes out before loading at 2880x1800, and crashed a few minutes into the game on 1680x1050.

I mean this is ridiculous. I don't have any issues with any other apps I use, except Civ V. Civ V crashing takes away half the games I play...but I guess that means I'll just have to play more Diablo 3 until Firaxis gets it's stuff together.

For the curious, mine has 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM, and 2.3GHz i7, 1GB VRAM, GTX650m.

Firaxis will not "get its stuff together" on this, as they write the software to target Windows drivers and DirectX. You need to flag it up to Aspyr, who write the code that converts Firaxis graphics code to work with Mac OS X and its OpenGL drivers. I recommend raising a support ticket at Aspyr Support, though I expect they are already aware.

The Macbook Pro with Retina display isn't currently supported for Civ V.

That hardware was announced after we finalized the game. We're waiting for hardware, then we can start in on testing and potential fixes for that specific setup.

I'm a little surprised with that. I'd expect that the 650M would be able to handle the game decently, especially with 1 gig of RAM dedicated to the video card.

Are you sure it's not using the HD 4000 card when you play?

(note: all the above thoughts are pure theory craft)

It's definitely using the GTX650 when I'm playing... the fans come on and it gets quite hot, plus I checked using a monitoring tool. I'm surprised too that this video card can't handle anything better than 1440X900 on low settings, so I think something is not quite right somewhere, whether that's with Aspyr, the drivers or something else I don't know.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I must say I was a little worried about the new Mac's high res display and gaming - I mean that GPU has to do some SERIOUS work to render games at the native res and already seems a little underpowered for that purpose. I'd also be very interested to hear more about heat issues given the MBP's history in that regard...

I have not had problems playing G&K (or CiV before the update) on my MBPwRD when playing at "normal" resolution of 1400x900. If in Full Screen mode I try to increase to greater resolution, I have found that it crashes occasionally.

The actual turn times are much faster than my previous MBP. I realized that I had developed a habit of hitting next turn then moving on to other tasks. And more often than not, I now find that as I turn away it is my turn again. Good for my game playing, bad for my other tasks.

Not sure about the underpowered comment. But looking at Diablo III with everything maxed out is beautifully rendered with a very good frame rate. Friends who are more serious gamers than me (CiV and sim type games are more my style) have found it looks superior to gaming rigs they have used. I have no doubt if CiV was modified to take advantage of this, it could look equally good.

This doesn't look like an underpowered graphics system to me ...

So, all you folks with fancy Retina MBPs, I could use some information.

If you're crashing, please let me know what settings (map size, map type, and video settings) you are using. Also, it would be useful to know what you have the desktop resolution set to (Scaled, Best for Retina, etc).

Please let me know about any other problems.

Ryan,

Mine is set for "Best for Retina". On trying out getting the display to use the full resolution for CiV, I had to switch to Full Screen Mode and reboot before it would recognize the 2880x1800 option. All Video settings at the max available. Game was Standard size, continents, normal speed, King. Crash would end with the screen frozen, mouse arrow would move but could not switch apps/spaces. Force Quit would make the CiV screen close immediately and return to desktop - no other problems.

Switched back to 1440x900 on full, as well as other lower resolutions in Window mode, and the crashing stopped.

Additional specs: 2.7 GhZ processor, 16 GB RAM.

Hope this helps, and happy to send along any data to help improve the game.

AlanH, you're absolutely right and thank you for correcting me.

Generally I'm pretty impressed with Aspyr, I find the Mac version of Civ 5 to be better than the PC Version. Both my brother and myself are not very happy with the PC version for various reasons.

@AspyrRyan: Would crash logs help? When Civ 5 crashes it generates logs to Apple, I can post those here or PM you them if they would help, along with settings when I was playing. I just had it crash when running at 1440x900, max settings, crashed at turn 10. Using NVIDIA card, plugged in, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, using WiFi for network access. I should also mention I use the Steam version and it's fully patched.

Let me know.

If you can PM me the crash log, that'd be great. Crashes are seeming common, but unfortunately random.
At this point, I'm wondering if the crashing is Retina specific, or 650M specific. We have hardware to test on, but more information is always good.

AspyrRyan - I guess I can't PM you, I don't seem to have that as an option. I looked through the crash log and I removed the UUID, is there anything else in there that is like a serial number that would be unsafe for me to publish here? I didn't see anything else...
