SGOTM 16 - Decathlon

We have a 100% success rate across our eight team this time around. We are clearly setting the bar too low :) All teams achieved the full set of objectives set by kcd_swede. The double victory condition requirement was met by everyone, with only a couple of hundred years separating the first and last finishers. Most teams, including the laurel winners, took Diplomacy and Domination. Unusual Suspects and Xteam had Religious and Domination victories, Maple Sporks had Culture and Domination, and Misfits Gypsy Nuts went for Diplomacy and Culture.

Congratulations go to the same award winners as in the last game:

Well played everyone. :thanx:

Congrats to all of the award winners. Many of us still have a lot to learn...

Thanks to the admins for a very fun game!!!

Thank you KCD Swede and AlanH for running this game.

Congratulations to the laurelists! :)

Congrats teams, very well played.

Congrats to all of the teams for finishing all of the Objectives! It was a hard-fought game and it took real mastery of the game to successfully manage these competing goals. You should all feel proud of yourselves for your efforts!

Extra congrats go out to those teams that managed to complete these Objectives faster than others.

Thanks go out to the staff for yet another well-put-together SGOTM!

Would it be too much to ask to have the results list the second Victory Condition that teams achieved? Gumbolt seems to have compiled an unofficial list that is almost complete.

Congratulations to everyone for having fun!

Thanks to you, KCD, for putting together a great game. I personally measure SGs by how much I learn from them and this was up there with the best.

Special thanks to you, AlanH, for always being there to create the best sub-forum at this great website!!! :goodjob:

I thought you might ask, which is why I put exactly that information in the first paragraph. It's there, rather than in the awards list, so that all the team VCs are included. I should also acknowledge that I took advantage of Gumbolt's list when I wrote that.

Congratulations to all who participated! I'm sure we all learned a lot along the way.

Maybe just me, but I could not find SGOTM16 from the droplist of replays.
:dunno:

Sorry. Forgot to set a database flag. Try now

Wow, everyone got all 10 objectives! A very nice SGOTM :goodjob:

Also, Tachywaxon should be on the name list for Kakumeika. :o
(And maybe LowtherCastle in tiny letters)

Congratulations to everyone, especially since every team managed to complete the Decathlon.

And thanks to all the admins and the map maker for this great game.

It was a very enjoyable game. Thanks everyone for participating.

Congratulations to everyone. :goodjob:

Thanks as well to the designers and admin staff for a fun game.

Thanks to KCD and AlanH for hosting. This was a very fun game!

Congrats to all teams for achieving the goals, and special congrats to the winners!

Congrats to all teams! Thanks to the admin! This was a tough one to manage and everyone hit every objective!

Yes and add Tachywaxon and LowtherCastle to the list of Kakumeika please.

Apologies for leaving LowtherCastle out of the Kakumeika list.

Congratulations to everyone! :)

A small correction, not that it matters much, but Maple Sporks won by Culture and Domination, not Diplomacy. Being nice to AIs is just not in us. ;)

Hi guys and gals, you never cease to amaze me. I shouldn't say I expected some teams to fail to acheive all objectives - I just thought you would struggle a lot more with them than you seemed to.

When the game started, I was following all the teams pretty closely, and recording comments and observations. Unfortunately, those comments were lost in my latest disk-crash... so I can only comment by memory (of course, any of you who want more detail are free to read the team threads).

I remember worrying that some teams would get a random advantage by Brennus founding an early religion (and building you a shrine) and others would not. In testing, it varied depending what happened on the other continent. I thought I fixed that by giving him an oasis... and in most games it went like testing: Brennus founds Bhudism. However, in some teams he failed, but that was made up for imo by either him founding Judaism or Egypt founding Hindu or something. all that worry and it turned out to be probably an insignificant factor... at least compared to Suspect's popping gold in the first few turns.

I wanted to force you to use the UN for something, but when Leif mentioned Humbaba I decided to make life easier on you (well, actually on me, but it amounts to the same);) I wanted Humbaba to be unassailable early in the game, but let you find him early enough to plan just how many resources to expend... cuilture flip or just kill with a whole lot of units? Anyhow, I realized pretty early into your games that most of you recognized this task as almost irrelevant when you needed to get to Future Tech anyhow. Future tech was in order to ensure everyone would have to get some experience playing late game finishes. I wanted to give you freedom to plan your own victory type, but it was either ban religious or force you to get two (and getting conq/dom would be too trivial of a distinction).

Stealing IW seemed the obvious choice, and I probably should have made it a little more variable what would be best. But I am satisfied that I forced some use of espionage, and perhaps delayed the early rushes a little.

I didn't follow all the team threads so much after the first 40t, since teams played at such a different pace it was really hard to make sense of it all. I mainly followed the fastest teams - so if you like spectators, take note. :) That showed me early that Humbaba misbehaved in a couple teams, so we had to correct some stuff on the fly, but no harm done as we were able to keep things fair.

Most suprising to me was Kaku's settler-wandering gambit. That was quite unexpected (after I spent so much effort trying to balance the different types of openings that looked logical). I thought they had gotten a big advantage there, but as things turned out, I think consistent good choices throughout the game was more important in the outcomes than any of the unexpected gambits. I hope you agree, and each team can see which part of the game they may have been pressing on without a good idea of what they wanted to accomplish. Or just had a lot of fun.

I was glad to see strong participation by several players on just about every team. It shows there were so many asects that required managing, that several people were needed to keep track of doing it all in an efficient manner, and being expet in one aspect of the game was less important than having mastery of many different aspects.

Note, the map was largely unedited from a random spawn. I "balanced out" some resources near the start, and tried to make sure the strategic ones would not be too easy to get. I won't tell you how many times I put jungle over all the nearby horses only to remove it again in fear some teams might get wiped out early by barbarians. I shouldn't have worried (note to self for future mapamaking:devil:) Of course, Humbaba's space was a construct, but a lot less so than most of you might imagine).

Anyhow... I know this must seem like a lot of rambling... I've been interupted 6 times while writing this.

I greatly enjoyed watching the exemplary teamwork and sound play of the Gold Laurel winning Plastic Ducks. I thought Kaku had an edge with their settling, but I had trouble understanding what they were doing with the really early DOW on Brennus. Anyhow, they are never to be counted out, and it was a really close finish. The other close race was for the Bronze laurels... congrats to the Phoenix Rising for pushing it out for a 2t faster finish than the U'nusual S'uspects.

I saw a lot of creativity from all the teams, (for which the spoon award is properly rewarded to) and have myself learned a lot about game management. (So now I'll be even better equipped to mess you all up next time:lol:)

Speaking of next time... keep an eye out for the sign-up thread for SGOTM17. Coming very soon (days, not weeks).:D I look forward to serving you again.
