How Do I Access Uploaded Games

Hi all, I'm no techie, but can usually figure this stuff out (eventually) for myself. This time, I'm at my wits' end.

I'm trying to play the Deity Challenge games listed on the Strategy and Tips thread. I save the file, make sure it's there (it is), open up Steam, launch Civ V, and then…….I have no idea how to find the downloaded game file from there.

If I go to Load Game, my choices are:

-Last Modified
-Autosaves
-Steam Cloud

There are no other options or drop down boxes. The file is on my Mac, but I can't access it from Civ V BNW.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

You need to place the save game file in the appropriate folder; you can't tell Civ to go looking for it.

Assuming this is a single-player game using no 3rd party mods, it goes in:

~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves/single

OK, so I found the file in my finder under Downloads. How do I move it? I can't even open it.

Typically I will just click and drag the file - in finder, drag it over the Home icon at the top, and then over each folder in turn as it appears, never letting go until you're in the final folder.

Alternatively, you can copy/paste it. You're still going to need a Finder window - if you're looking at it in the little downloads section in the task bar next to the trash bin, there's something at the top of that that says "xx More in Finder". Click that. Then find the file in the list. Then right-click or control-click and select "Copy", or you can click the file and press command-C. Then navigate to the folder in Finder, and right-click or control-click in an empty space in the folder and select "Paste", or click into the folder and press command-V.

Let me thank you in advance, as I do appreciate your help.

Everything you are saying makes perfect sense, IF I was still on my PC. I can find the file and I'm pretty sure I can move the file. I just have no clue where to move it to? There is nothing on my Mac that says anything about a SidMeierCivilization folder.

When I go into Finder and search for that, or any similar keyword, I get nothing. The only reference to the game anywhere in Finder are files I've downloaded from Steam/Civ 5, and a couple of files I've downloaded from this site trying to make this work.

Would it be possible to post a couple of screenshots, as I'm probably missing something very obvious.

(I only switched to a Mac last year for the video processing capabilities…..still don't quite have a grasp of the system if you couldn't tell).

Again, thanks in advance for the help.

Your Home folder is the folder with a little house icon. You will also see it referred to as ~/ in file paths like the one given above. So ~/Documents/Aspyr/ means the folder called Aspyr, in the folder called Documents, in your Home folder.

~/Documents is roughly equivalent to the My Documents folder in Windows.

You can usually find ~/Documents by looking in the left hand pane (the Sidebar) of a Finder window, in a list called Favorites If your Finder window doesn't show the Sidebar, go to the View menu in Finder and select Show Sidebar.

Here's what my Finder looks like open to the appropriate folder. The icons at the top:
1) Go back
2) Go forward
3) Switch to tile view
4) Switch to list view (most similar to Windows explorer)
5) Switch to columns view (my favorite)
6) Switch to "cover flow" view (good for previewing a folder with a bunch of media files)
7) Actions menu (e.g. create a folder)
8) Home

#9 there is Dropbox, which you won't have unless you use Dropbox and installed the Mac client :)

10) Sort options
11) Share (send a file via email, Message, or AirDrop to another iOS or OS X device)
12) Edit Tags (a lot like blog posts that are tagged with keywords to help you find them; I've never done this)

I clicked the "Home" button at the top and then each folder in succession to get to the game's folder.

You'll also note "Downloads" in the Favorites section on the left, which is an alternate way to get to the file instead of the icon down by the trash bin. It's also typically ~/Downloads.
As Alan mentioned, "~" means "Home". You might be aware that Mac OS X is built on a variant of Unix, so the terminology comes from there. The equivalent in Windows is something like C:\Documents and Settings\Users\username\. I think.

You have me wondering if I put that there myself.. I've been using OS X for so long I forget what's out of the box and what I've set up for myself. You can drag any folder up to that top bar.

If you look at the bottom of the window, you'll see the Home icon and your username. Try clicking on that.

Following the very good instructions above, here's my dead-end.

By the "Path", I think you mean the Column view that I have selected. That's just personal preference, and it's my icon #5. It looks like you're already in it.

I also misspoke before. The "springboard" (the thing that lets you drag files on top of folders and have them automatically open) doesn't work on the top bar. It does work on the side bar.

From where you are, you can click the file, Drag it on top of the "Documents" on the left, and wait for that to open.. and then drag it to Aspyr, Sid Meier's Civilization V, etc. Never let go of the file until you're in the final folder. There's about a 1-2 second wait hovering over each folder until it opens.

I think we are getting close.

Now how do I put this save into this file. It shows the map/path to where a single player save would be, but when I open up Civ V to load the game, it isn't there. So I'm thinking I'm not saving it or something?

Edit: Nix that. I think I've got it. Hold that thought.

We have a winner!!!! I present to you, the latest Deity Challenge, Augustus Caesar, downloaded today and ready to play!!!

I thank you very much for your patient and informative help. You should congratulate yourself for being able to educate a stubborn mule like myself.
