Problem with civ3edit

I'm having trouble with civ3edit.

Running civ3edit on 1.21g

I wanted to make a tweak or three to a .bic I downloaded from these forums but when I load the bic file, the map is the large empty green map. I'm trying this with marlas world map and Kal-Els Resource 180x180 Earth v1.0F.bic

The map loads correctly when I load the shipped big Earth (Huge).bic but I wanted to make changes to one of the better maps out there.

Am i doing something odd or is this not supposed to work or some kind of compatibility issue?

Yes, it's the map. The .bic loads fine on a friends PC version of Civedit so I guess it's an incompatibility. Perhaps a version number issue as the PC is at 1.29 and the mac editor is 1.21?

That's correct. The Mac editor never made it to 1.29 compatibility. Maps made using it can be played on 1.29, but maps made for 1.29 can't be edited.

Yes, I considered the possibility of doing a converter. Editing the bic to fit the old format should be pretty easy. The main task would be to develop code to recompress after editing, but I guess that would not be essential.

A converter written in VB is pretty useless on a Mac, I'm afraid, Ainwood, so I'd have to produce a converter in Objective C, which won't happen real soon, as I'm up to my ears in PHP stuff right now ;). If you want to offer a conversion service for Mac users for now that would be great. I've uploaded a .zip file here that contains the civ3mod.bic file from the 1.21 version. qIroS will have to send you the .bic files he wants converted - I don't think I have them.

Brad did build a skeleton editor for 1.29f; however, his move to Aspyr forced him to drop the project. I've emailed Westlake Interactive asking (per Brad's advice) if anyone would be willing to pick it up as a pet project for warm fuzzies, but no reply. :(

I'd offer to do it myself, but I stopped upgrading my CodeWarrior copy some time ago, when their ticket price to ride just got too silly. I only XCode now, so I would probably not be able to open the editor project even if Westlake were prepared to supply it. [EDIT: Correction. I think it's a Carbon app. If so, it would probably be hard work to convert to Cocoa to compile in XCode]

Over the past few days I have been looking into the possibility of creating a set of Objective C libs to modify MODs and Bic files, and starting up a new all Cocoa Civ 3 editor for 1.29 [civ3]. I think many parts can be done without too much trouble and some time. Anyone else interested, have advice, or suggestions I would love to hear them. :)

Hi Queue

I have a bunch of ObjC code to read a save or bic and parse it into a Cocoa data structure - uses dictionaries and arrays much as you'd expect. It was displaying some of the MapStat data OK, and the last thing I was trying to get it to do, with some success, was to display a map, so I also produced code to read and display a .pcx file.

I stopped working on it when I got embroiled in the PHP facilities we needed here for gotm file handling, but the online gotm and sgotm submission code uses the same architecture, with PHP's associative arrays emulating the capability of a Cocoa data dictionary.

PS If you detected a delay in my reply it's because I just spent a happy hour or three successfully upgrading my G4/350 Sawtooth to .. 1GHz. This machine now officially ROCKS!!! [party] [party]

Can you throw me one with custom maps with cities, colonies etc?

Here's a map created using the Mac editor. But I can't see a way to add cities or colonies to the .bic in the editor.

I'm so pathetic, I just tried a clean installation of Civ3 from the CD, just to double check if the editor works. So I installed 1.21g, then the Civ3edit, and still nothing, just had to try again, like I've said before, I just can't let go of the hope. I can't even figure out what would cause it not to work for some. I had a communication with a tech at Macsoft for two days, then when I tried to explain like he ASKED me to, he never answered me. So, they don't care because it works for them on all of their MacOSs. And that's not a problem because I'm running 10.2.8 and I'm positive I have the North American version, I bought it in the US. I guess I'm back to harrassing my buddy to make me maps on the PC. At least 1.29 B2 makes them compatable.

Thanks for the map, Alan. Nice start position.

It is, isn't it! Purely random, I assure you. I started playing it, and I had to tear myself away to post it. You might never have seen it

 I can't get the editor to work. I have re-installed [civ3mac] and tried. I have upgraded to 1.21g and tried. I have tried downloading the editor over & over, from wherever I could find it. Nothing has worked. :wallbash:
:whipped: I have given up. Does anyone have something I can try? I can't load a senerio I made earlier. I can't start a new senario. I can't generate a new map with the editor.

Welcome to the macmadhouse :wavey:

Have you removed the editor from its folder? It has to be on its own in the same folder as a Civ3 version 1.21g application file. No other configuration will work.

:thanx: I'm excited to find CivFanatics… (I have edited my initial post.) Yes I have tried the editor inside, outside, on the desktop, every place I could think of.

Does that mean it *did* work and has stopped working?
