The end of Jumpmasters 1B saw a small group of bloodthirsty Mongol khans looking around, wondering what to burn... ehm, to do next.
Imagine -one of them had almost run out of succession games! :ack: He would no longer be up it at least three or four at the same time!!

A deity game was felt appropriate, with Space Race as the victory condition. There was the desire to try a practice game with a focus on fast tech progression; we looked for a good introduction to Deity, and for a game that would offer a meaningful comparison in terms of SR finish date.

To make this short:
we are going to replay GOTM20 - Spain, and we are aiming at the fastest Space Race victory that we can achieve.

Our reference is therefore Kemal's launch date of 1275 AD
Kemal is a real specialist of SR victories (just look at his awards...), so I think that even getting within a few hundred years of his date would be a good result.

We will of course follow the GOTM rules -no need to type lots of do's and don'ts ;)

For the game specifics, I shamelessly copied the basic info from the original GOTM20 announcement page (why do the work twice if the first one is good already? :D )

The game settings are:
Civilization: Spain (Spanish)
Difficulty: Deity
World size: 5000 tiles
Landmass: Continents, 55% Water
Geology: Mystery
Environment: Mystery
Barbarians: Mystery
Rivals: 10 Preset
Upgrade Swordsmen/Longbows: ON

And this is the sarting position:

With the possible addition of AlanH, who said he might fall to the temptation...

In order to keep the temptation alive, I would suggest to play the Civ1.29f version, and I would pick the Open start just to have a neutral game to begin with.

If anyone else wants to join this game, feel free to sign in: we can always spin off another roster.

This is all open to our collective agreement, so I haven't picked the starting save yet.

As soon as everyone has checked in, we can set the final play order and start discussing downolad troubles, opening moves and game plan -I mean, we are no longer the Mongols; this time it has to be a bit more sophisticated than just 'raze and burn all that has a different colour'... ;)

You forgot to add that he was also dodging 2 hurricanes which now appears to be a third in about a months timespan. There isn't much of Florida left and this one looks even bigger.

Put me in the lineup at the bottom and autoskip me if you don't hear from me by the middle of next week. We may go to Georgia or Kentucky for this one.

Well, since you kept the temptation alive, how can I resist :D. Any room left at the inn?

If there is a PTW spinoff, I would like to play. For some reason, I am having trouble getting Vanilla to work.

on!

Hey Mistfit, we're hanging out in some pretty illustrious company here! :)

I'd be happy to play early in the roster (again), since I'll be out of town (again) September 27 - October 27. I think I understand the concept for this game - books are for reading, not burning, right?

Checking in...with a few questions

1) Spain is a PTW Civ - I this Modded into the GOTM?
2) Do we use the same Mod as we did for the last game or do I need to change something?
3.) You mentioned that we were using Kemal's score as a benchmark - Do you know if he used the open or preditor save for his game? I think this would make a difference in our score if we did not use the same...Right?
4.) Is the following still the same?

Characteristics: Religious & Commercial

OK answered some of my own questions
GOTM site said:
The Unique Unit (UU) for the Spanish in the Civ3v1.29 equivalent game is the Spanish Missionary, which has identical (3/2/2 - 70 cost) statistics to the Conquistador in PTW. This unit replaces the Explorer unit that becomes available with Navigation and requires horses to build. The Spanish Missionary has a zone of control and can treat all terrain as roads giving it an effective movement range of up to six terrain squares under most conditions

Other than that I'm happy to be aboard and ready to go to Space.

@nikof: definitely :D

I'd like to play, but I have a couple of potential problems.

1. Is a download required? I still get the Internet by beating a coconut against a rock--that is, by dial-up. ;)

2. Where does a 5000-tile map fit into the normal/large/huge scale? Large is about my computer's limit.

Thanks in advance for the answers. :)

I am interested... should be my first SG, but how do you have Spain in vanilla?

@Mistfit:

You should be able to run with vanilla modded as in Jumpmasters 1B. The only difference is that GOTM20 had a special set of resources. If you installed the mod packs then you should find a "resources storage" folder in your \Art\ folder. Inside that there should be some folders called "gotm20 ....". Below is a picture of part of my \Art\ folder structure - sorry it's from a Mac, but I'm sure you'll get the idea.

I use "gotm20 w letters smilies and bonus". Copy the two files inside this folder and paste them into \Art\ to replace the existing ones. If the existing ones are those you used for Jump 1B then they are probably already copies of the ones in "gotm21 w smilies and blips", but if you want to be sure you can make backups of them before replacing them.

In vanilla the "Spanish Missionary" is the UU. He has the same stats as the PTW Conquistador, but looks (to me) a bit like Michael Palin playing the Spanish Inquisition in Monty Python. "No one expects the Spanish Inquisaition". Your existing Jump 1B installation should already have him loaded.

@Northern Pike:

I'm afraid you'll need at least the GOTM 21 full mod pack. If there's a PTW team for you to join then the download is a lot smaller I think. 5000 tiles is a standard map.

So if I join on vanilla, I will need to download not only the graphics mod, but also the entire package for GOTM 21? I thought this was a re-do of GOTM 20...

The full GOTM21 package is the first integrated pack that contains all the previous bits and pieces. If you like you can try to assemble the separate elements by scouting through gotms 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, downloading the separate components and installing them by hand. I think you'll find the single 21 pack a bit easier.

[EDIT] The gotm21 pack *is* the graphics mod. You don't need anything else except the gotm20 start file.

Ok, I understand now. This would be an official sign-up.

One more snippet from the archives of gotom mods. If anyone is installing them fresh for this game you need to be aware that there's an additional manual step required for PC vanilla players. After you've installed the GOTM21 pack you have to make 7 additional copies of the file \Art\Flics\spain.flc in the same folder, and call the new copies spain1.flc, spain2.flc, spain3.flc .... spain7.flc

Don't ask me why. Maybe it was intended to cut the download size by 150 KBytes :hmm:

According to the GOTM results page Kemal played Open for GOTM20. That was the first GOTM with the Conquest/Open/Predator levels, and there weren't many that were brave enough to go for Predator (just 6 our of 185).
