Forgive me if this has been thought of before, but here's an idea for everybody.... :)

It would be nice if Aztec Monks, Celtic Druids, dark age Christian Holy Men, and Hebrew Rabbi, all had some sort of 'morale' effect in combat by making their stack fight better or the enemy fight a little worse. The early Republican Romans for example say that the Etruscans were often led into battle by a contingent of priests "who advanced like furies, brandishing snakes and burning torches".
Well.....maybe there is a way..... ;)

How about giving these 'units' a defensive bombardment of say 3, with a range of zero and a rate-of-fire of one?

Now when anyone tries to attack a stack that contains any Monks/Druids/Priests, there is a chance that the attacking unit may lose a hit point before the battle starts, simulating a drop in confidence.

Currently, each 'defensive bombardment' unit can only fire once per turn, so the more Priests there then the more chances of 'firing', and so giving that particular stack an advantage, at least in defense. You could even adjust the bombardment and rate-of-fire factors to simulate the fact that some nations had more powerful Gods than others!

I can't think of a way to make this system work when attacking, but it is worth a thought. ;)

That is a good idea! And I was only gonna try and use them as Civ specific leaders....

Would that work? Or will the era upgrading not work for these new units?

....hmmm....you've got me thinking davros42....

This 'invoking-the-Gods' defensive bombardment could also be given to Army units to represent the fact that they are led by exceptional generals (think of Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, Frederic the Great, Napoleon, Wellington, von Manstein, and so on, all of whom KNEW how to win battles, even if outnumbered!).
It might help to make Armies popular again. :D

An Army unit 'should' retain any stats given to it in the Civ3Editor, and all that happens when you progress through the eras is the graphics change into more modern looking ones.

And you could create specific Armies for specific nations (i.e a German_Army or a Roman_Army), but I'm not sure how to make these upgrade to more modern animations as the game progresses. I think you would have to create new Civilization/Art/units folders called "German_Army_Industrial_Ages" and "German_Army_Modern_Times".
And I have no idea how to tie these with new icons in the units_32 city build file.

Anyone else got any info on this matter?

You are correct that if you create those art folders ie "German Army Modern Times" (w/o the underlines) with an .ini file the graphics will update with new eras. I don't know if you can make civ specific armies tho... Let me take that back...I think you can build civ specific armies but I don't think you can tie those new armies to the "leader can create an army" function or "small wonder allows you to build armies" function. I don't know for sure but it seems that the game is going to look to create a standard army unit in those circumstances.

I'm in the middle of a game at the moment, but plan to give it a shot with the next one.... We'll see if it crashes as soon as the Aztecs (or whoever) get ahold of a leader

Giving a small Bombard to armies is cool... But wouldn't that negate the offensive pluses to attacking with them? Maybe I just don't stack my armies often enough to enjoy a defensive bombard from them....

You can give those Special actions to any unit, the only problem is on the General Settings tab it only has one Battle-Created Unit and Build-Army Unit.
You could have the normal Leader/Army unit upgrade to the civ-specific Leader/Army units which upgrade to another civs Leader/Army, not sure if an upgrade loop will work though.

I like the Priest idea. Now, somebody just has to make a Rabbi!

The AI wouln't use it though.

I've yet to see the AI do anything completely stupid with a unit.... Most of the time if it doesn't see a need for a unit (like the Trojan Horse land transport with a submarine tag I gave the Greeks) it just doesn't build it...

However when multiplayer comes out, I'm sure we'll see lots of real intelligences use the units in completely stupid fashions :D

Wow.. this was an idea that never occured to me :D
But with C3C, you would have to drop the army defensive bombard bonus (due to the increases in army stats).

Oh, and I hope you won't get angry for reviving an old thread. :mischief:
