I always make a point of changing a city name to something ridiculous before I trade it. Always amazes me the AI never changes the name to something more believable. How would you fancy being a citizen of Wombat's Bum or Badger's Nipple? I love the Civ II cheat where you could change the AI's city names. Tee hee.:D

You might be able to change the names using a hexeditor (after autosave). :)

I'm glad the Vikings are back in PTW because my favorite thing to do in Civ II was to play the Vikings, name myself Dennis Green (who was the coach back then) and name every city after a current or former Minnesota Viking player.

It was pretty taxing there for a while when you got to the 40th or 50th city trying to come up with names... even for an admitted sports nut like myself.

Better be careful. I heard the citizens of Randy Moss take every other turn off.

Edit: Also - be wary of a civ that offers to trade you the city of Herschel Walker. You'll give up too many future city sites and HW will just end up back with the once weak, but now powerful civ that traded HW to you in the first place.

MP has made it lots more fun to rename your cities. Especially when playing with my housemates, I can name my cities "Do Your Dishes" or "Not My Turn to Take Out the Trash."

I seldom change the names of my cities...

But when I do, it tends to be when I am playing Germany,
I change the city names to match the Album and song names of German Metal band, Running Wild...

Port Royal, Blazon Stone, Torguga bay, Black Hand Inn...to name a few!

Well Jolly the Minnesota Vikings are 40 years old so hopefully you can come up with some older names too

Frank Gilliam
Joe Capp
Bill Brown
Dave Osborne
Joe Senser
Fran Tarkenton

etc etc etc.

Jolly: Yeah, I've heard that.. and forget about building Mass Transit there, too!

sabo10: Paul Krause, all the Purple People Eaters (Alan Page, Jim Marshall, etc.) are some others that I remember, mostly from collecting football cards in the late 70s... Chuck Foreman...

And of course my favorite former Minnesota Viking player name:

Mick Tingelhoff

To get on on-topic a bit...

Chinese names are really screwed up in Civ3. Firaxis mixed it in with old and new city names. Chengdu, Anyang, and Bejing are new names, while Tiestein, Tsingto, and Canton are old city names.

I believe that if Firaxis does city names, it should be uniform and the correct new spelling. For one thing, it's now standard in China. And two it will make Civ3 thought of as a culture-sensitive game.

Following hbdragons lead to get back on topic:

The last German city, Brandenburg, is a province. At least, thats according to my friend who takes German classes.

The American city list is too long. Has anyone here ever seen the "newwashington?"Even Palo Alto is on there. Why? Because of HP? Because of Stanford? Because all the rich people live here? This is my hometown and I have no idea why its on civ3.

I almost always make up new names for my cities. I guess I get bored using the default ones, but I'd definately never post a screen shot of any of my new city names here ;)

great new thread farting bob!

I will weigh in with my thoughts: I used to love when you could use your spy unit to rename enemy cities in Civ2, I used to name them "Next Target" and "Not Alive For Long" etc.

I used to name every city fresh with mnemonics about its location, founding, whatever but I am lazy now.

Now Im only naming cities in PBEM, where you can see a nice example of my handiwork in the Tiny Hellions PBEM thread somewhere in the last few pages.

For my cities I like to put a little Prophesy for one like "Iron works Here" or "Hoover dam here" or "Culture Flip (Ai City name)", or In multiplayer I like to write insults to the other player with my city names; One tactic I use is to write an insult on my city to Civ A on the border of Civ B than give it to Civ B an watch the fight from a distance. :mwaha:

Yep!

Königsberg (Koenigsberg for those who can't find the ö) is also now Kaliningrad, not in germany anymore.....

Heidelberg, not Heidelburg or other Sid Meier brutaities....

Köln, not Cologne (Koeln)

München, not Munich (Muenchen)

Nürnberg, not Nuremberg (Nuernberg)

and the guy was named Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, nor Richtoffen

I have got a little pornographic at times with city names but learnt my lesson when my girlfriend asked me about their origin! I guess relationships with other human beings and Civ rarely mix.

Lt. 'Killer' M., those names are accept English names for the places; seeing that Civ III is a English-language, not German-language, game, what's wrong with using them?

And Königsberg was an important German centre for centuries; the fact that it relatively recently ended up in Russia doesn't end that. Surely, the in-game Germany represents at least as much the Imperial Germany of Bismarck's day (which did include Königsberg) as the modern Federal Republic? If you dislike it's inclusion, do you also dislike the plethora of Russian and Persian cities that're not inside the borders of today's states of Russia and Iran? What to do about states that simply doesn't exist anymore, like Babylonia*?

The most stupid city names in the game must be Ganges and Indus in the Indian list ...

* Please don't tell me that Babylonia "became" Iraq. There's no political continuity whatsoever between the Neobabylonian Empire (brought down by Achaemenid Persia in mid-500s BC) and today's Iraq (created out of three Ottoman provinces after WWI), still less between the later and Hammurabi's realm (which disintegrated a millennium before the Neobabylonian Empire's foundation).

I will not go into the discussion of all the reasons NOT to include Königsberg again - has to do with WWII and so on.

as for the other names: Heidelburg is a typical American idiocy! it is NOT a long-used English name for the town (and Berg means Mountain, not castle/burgh btw)....... Sue English names as you please - fine with me. But then you will certainly agree that there is no need for Germans to spell New York New York instead of Nu Jork. Washington = Waschingten, Cinncinatti = Zinnzinattie...

don't take it too seriously, I just wanted to give the proper spelling for those who want to change the names in their Civ3 ;)

damn, they changed the title. it said f***** up city names.
