This is the most important and famous office in the government.
Located in a place which nobody knows... controlled by nobody specific... there are the chat operators.

Our mission is to make the chat experience in #demogame, the demogame chat-channel on webchat chat network, the best and most reliable experience of this demogame.

Out primary goal is to ensure the satisfaction of our executive and the citizenry. As such, feel free to contact our team with questions and requests whenever you like. Either in here, on chat or in person.

How to join the chat?
With a java client
You can use a special java client provided by civfanatics to connect to the chatroom. Just enter "#demogame" as chatroom on the above page.
Be aware this client is only a workaround if you are not able to use a "real" chatclient like mirc. For example you will not be able to see multiple rooms at the same time.

With a "real" chat client
The best way to connect to the chatroom or to any other chat is to use a "real" irc chatclient, like MIRC.
* connecting to the server
This depends on the client you use. You will have to enter the servername "irc.irc-chat.net" into this field.
* joining a channel
This also depends on the client. Normally you use the commands "/j [channelname]" or "/join [channelname]" to do so.
In MIRC, you would have to use "/j #demogame" to join the demogame chat and "/j #civfanatics" to join the normal civfanatics chatroom.
It is advisable to join both rooms, as off-topic discussion which may also be related to the game will often be in #civfanatics.

I cant talk. Why?
The chat services of the new irc network we are on only can automatically voice users with registered nicknames (see next faq). So if you did not register your nick you need to wait for an operator to voice you manually. Normally this is done automatically by chieftess, but if she is not there you need to wait. Or register your nickname.

How to register your nick?
On chat systems, anyone can use your nick. To prevent others from using it or even imitating they were you, you can regsiter a nick with a password.
* how do i do this?
When you are at the chat with the nick you want to register, type into the command line "/nickserv register [password] [email-address]", where password is the password you want to set and email-address is a valid email address (you will be sent a confirmation mail which you have to comply to within 24 hours).

After you did this, you will have to enter "/nickserv identify [password]" every time in future you come to the chat.

Example:
email is "xxx@yyy.com" and password "zzz"
would be to register:
/nickserv register zzz xxx@yyy.com
and for login to the chat:
/nickserv identify zzz

Who will be operators of #demogame?
There are permanent operators:
* Any Chat Office employee
And termly assigned operators:
* The President
* The Vice President
Chatly assigned temporary operators during a turnchat:
* The Designated Player
* Any person which is approoved by the Designated Player to become temporary operator during a turnchat

I should be termly assigned operator, but am not?
Did you pm the owner and the super-operators your REGISTERED nickname and have you identified to this nickname on the chat via nickserv? If not then automatically opping you is not possible!

Who will define the termly and permanent operators?
The Super-Operator and the Owner can set permanent operator privilege (meaning that that person will be auto-opped every time he/she enters the channel).
Permanent Operators must be approoved by the Chat Owner, termly operators will be set by the Super-Operator or the Owner after the elections are conclusive.
NOTE: all permanent or termly operators must(!) register their nick. Otherwise we can not set them as aop of the channel!

How to become a chat deputy?
* Get elected for president or vice president for a temporary access to the operator right for free
* Pay 5000 gold to disorganizer. Pay 500 gold per lesson to the chat office for visiting the operator-school. 10 Lessons minimum. Pay 1000 gold for the exam to become a mod.

1) be polite
disregarding of the publically vaild netiquette will result in bans.

2) listen to the operators
if an operator tells you something, listen to him. if he tells you to stop something, stop it.
our chatroom is moderated, so if an operator decides to devoice you, you will not be able to talk there any more. keep this in mind. successive violation will result in a permanent ban from the room.

3) no clones
the usage of clones (duplicate logins with different names) in order to influence polls or confuse others.
exceptions can be made but must be announced in the chat and autorized by the designated player

4) no spamming, advertising or disturbing
any disturbing action like spamming or advertising will be proscecuted.

5) comply to the rules of the demogame
all rules of the demogame are full in effect in the chatroom. the action to be taken on a violation of those rooms is up to the designated player.

Good work, Dis. I wish you had posted this during the last game, as I would have gladly paid the 6000g to become a chat mod.

Any way of bypassing the lesson phase if your IRC knowledge is already fairly extensive? :mischief:

well, it was posted :-) it was there from i think term2 in the chat office thread... but as i said, our office is hidden in our government "cave" ;-)

ah, and ek, no exceptions... the lessons will improove your skills and my account :-)

to all of the people of our fine nation!

if somebody is able and willing to run a irc-bot on his computer for 24hours and 7 days a week, and is able to maintain, install and administer it, he may be offered the position of a regular chat-op in #demogame.

what we need is a chat-bot with the following features:
* passworded opping:
if a nick sends a special command with a password (which must be changeable) to the bot the bot ops that user
* channel statistics:
the bot must get the users/hour for each hour of the day and remember that for 7 days at least. data must be exportable to a excel readable format (csv?). also it would be nice to get those stats as text-output in the channel on request
* per-user stats:
bot must calculate the said words per user. weekly rankings will be calculated from that (top 10 users)
* voting support:
the bot must be usable to support polls in the channel. there are 2 kinds of poll: all user and restricted (cabinet)
* last seen:
last seen function must be there. so if somebody types !seen <userid> in the channel the bot answeres with the last login time of the given user.

what would be nice:
* to have a kind of "eliza bot" answering stupidly to stupid questions.
* to have the bot talk to itself with random quotes during times of no traffic
* to have some small online games or other funny things happen
* ...

applications can be posted in here... the bot must be online for the application so that we can test it online. the bot wont have op-rights until sucessfully tested in his functions.

This sounds interesting. Have you contacted CT? She's probably in that room more than all of us. Also, check with someone who's a bit more into the MSDG, croxis. He keeps his computer on all day (or will, at least, until summer) since we also use it as a secure server.
I'd volunteer, but I'm not in all the time, and someone would have to better explain how I'd have to work it...

my comp is on every day and night, Ill see if I can get MIRC to run continuously all night without any drops then PM you in the morning disorganizer.

of course Im not to familiar with running bots and so on, so Id have to be schooled in the way of the bot.

I thought bots were not allowed on webmaster, but I believe disorganizer knows what he is doing....;)

Some suggestions/thougts on bots in #demogame

the password-to-op-users bit can be handled by chanserv, so that should not be a thing to worry about. I suspect you would have to set chanserv to allow the bot to op users, if it was to work the way you specified, or else there might be a conflict there....

@per user stats: Be ware of "flood" like actions - if the ranking system is to be implemented, and perhaps even have some influence on the game (citizen honors....)

@eliza bot: I think you would have to use 2 bots if there was to be an eliza bot. One could be an entertainment bot, the other an admin bot.

I will say: What a great idea. Hope you get it up and running soon.

Just my 2 clubs, one chicken and a goat's worth.

This bit sounds horrific. As someone who likes to leave that channel open in case of some kind of interesting activity, I really don't want to have to put up with a lot of purposeless noise from some automaton :nono:

my god, that avatar scared me paalikes, for a moment I thought you were walrus, a forum goon at another site I visit :whew:

So that's what that is... due to the weird and wonderful joys of LCD laptop screens I'd managed to get the impression that it was a map of a small archipelago :crazyeye:

@immortal: i dont think of a mirc-bot though... :-) a mirc bot would need mirc to be open all day long. i dont think this is pretty practicable
@eklek: most of the persons on #civfanatics look like bots. at least they dont talk too much :-P... and of course i will try ot minimize bot-traffic... also, you can anytime set "ignore" for the bot-user, and so your mirc wont "blink" when the bot talks...
most of the "admin bots" come with implemented "fun functions"

i think the most important points of a bot would be
* independent logging facility
* polls
* channel protection
* statistics (general)

@amirsan: it should not be easy. if money gets earned too easy this game, maybe i will even up the price :-P

dis, be sure and head on over to #demogame on the new irc server (see the announcement for details). CT has set up the channel, and has given me this worthless half-op status! :)

shaitan: which is your nick? please pm your registered nickname to chieftess or me (or both) and you will be autoopped asap.

you surely noticed that civfanatics changed to a new chat network. here are the changes this implied for out chat service:

1) information in the faq updated
2) new chat-owner: chieftess
3) new super-operator: disorganizer
4) one op deleted: thegreyfox (lack of participation)
5) registration of nicknames is now recommended for all citizens!

this change did not only have positive effects, but also one pretty drastic effect on the voicing mechanism of #demogame.

the service "chanserv" can now no longer automatically voice nicknames which are not registered and identified to nickserv. this must be done manually by an operator (or by a local script). normally chieftess has a mirc script running doing this, but if she is not there there may be disruptions of that service.

WE THEREFOR RECOMMEND TO ALL OUR CITIZENS TO REGISTER THEIR NICKNAMES WITH NICKSERV ON THE NEW NETWORK!
