I have a gray and white iBook (the kind that came with a handle), and whenever attempting to start-up CivIII, I get a message telling me that DrawSprocket is unable to switch to the requested resolution. Is there any workaround for my iBook, or am I out of luck?

Did you set the correct resolution? Press <alt> while starting Civ III and a dialog appears allowing you to set it.

The problem is there doesn't seem to be a correct resolution. All of the available dialogs result in the same error message.

o.k. Then we need to go into details:
  1. What operating system are you running?
  2. How much ram do you have?
  3. Which version of CivIII are you running?
  4. What is the native resolution of your iBook?
  5. Which resolutions are shown when you <alt>-start CivIII?
    [/list=1]

1. OS X Version 10.2.6
2. 320 MB
3. Civ III 1.21g
4. 800 x 600
5. Ten resoulutions in two sets of five; none work:
1024x768
1152x870
1280x1024
1600x1200
1792x1344

1152x768
1600x1024
1920x1200
1280x954
1440x900

@Wes,

Does your iBook have a 1024x768 res option?
I don't think it would work unless both the game and your system can meet at the same res. i.e. - 1024x768.

You are out of luck. The minimum resolution required for the game is 1024x768.

Not that old. When did they stop making the multi-colored ones?

I can't find the date when they were discontinued on Apple's spec site, but the squarer white ones came out in May 2001 with 1024 x 768 screen resolution. The multi-colored ones prior to that were all 800 x 640 as far as I know. So it must be at least 2 years old - positively ancient!

The clamshell iBooks (I have one) only have a max resolution of 800 x 600.

so unless someone clever out there can come up with a replacement screen, there's no way to play Civ III on the original configuration iBooks. (I tried this when my Beige G3 was out of commission for a while, only to discover that both the iBook's built in display, and the AV output socket had max resolutions of 800 x 600 only.)

Only hope is to try and trade up to the newer iBook, which looks just like the new powerbooks.
