It is not possible for you to begin play at this time but you can strategize together about what you think you would do in the main strategic challenges of game.

This process should allow all the players to look over the setup instructions for the game and discuss what they think these instructions mean without the risk of any real spoiler information. Since none of the players will be able to start the game, essentially all you will have available to support your discussion will be past GOTM results and strategy articles.

The rules for participation in this discussion thread are simple:

1) read the game announcement and get yourself mentally prepared to play the game when the save game is released to you.

2) The basic game setup and map description have been announced on the scope of the game pages and you may freely discuss these features here. The specific differences between the three classes of play have not been posted but will be released at with the starting save files and will follow previous patterns of choice. The intent here is to focus on the general strategy overview issues that may be required to succeed in this game with this map and this civ, without diverging too much in the bonuses that will be placed in each of the three classes.

3) Once you download the starting save game file and open it to begin play you may no longer participate in this discussion thread.

I plan to leave this thread open to support pregame discussion for any players who have not yet opened the starting save game file but if we have any players who violate this rule the discussion will be closed.

Again there is a great deal going on inside and around this month's game, but at the core of the process the game is simple and fun. Read the instructions and you will have a good time.

An advance warning is appropriate because the setup files for all game versions are LARGE. This is because we have integrated a number of unit graphics that were provided in the PTW expansion pack extra folders but that were not activated in any game play options provided with that product.

Be warned also that the first spoiler discussion will not open until October 5th.

The first spoiler discussion will require you to have a specific map visibility plus a specific number of contacts and complete the Ancient Age.

May you snatch the pebble from your master's hand and play wisely in this game.

Here is also an image of the minimap of your Korean world to help you in your pregame planning:

I was thinking about going predator this time but I am slightly afraid of SID level starting units. What does this mean? I got the impression that SID level was turbo charged diety. Are you going to tell us how many starting units the AIs get - is it just a small graded step from Diety or is it giant leap to a sudden violent death for openclass kind?:)

samildanach,

Let's read that game announcement again s-l-o-w-l-y and see if we can up to the answers to your questions in the words that are provided.

Be careful about reading into the details of the anouncement in the wrong direction and misinterpreting the information that you are given. ;)

Ah.. sorry yes I see. Not much chance of me playing wisely in this game I seem to find myself a pebble short already as you kindly pointed out.:)

Well, in RL I would have no earthly intention of grasping a red-hot cauldron of coals with my forearms (plain stupid really), but the temptation to play this at predator is huge. So what the hell.

I've never moved the starting settler two tiles before, but there is a small temptation to do it in this case to get a coastal capital and the ability to irrigate the wheat directly, but I doubt I am capable of playing that radically. Given that, I'll probably settle on the forest NE after moving the worker N.

My research will be the pretty standard 40 turn to writing, and then another 40 turn to lit. If it turns out to be an island map (and I guess we're due one) then I'll have to change to map-making I guess. At least researching writing in 40 turns will give me time to decide what type of map we have.

I so strongly suspect an islands map that my second city will definitely be on the coast if I can't bring myself to move the first settler there. I don't really need to say how important the lighthouse could be, particularly with the modified naval movement costs.

Really it's difficult to say where I would go from there. I guess it's just a matter of making sure only one other civ can qualify for the vote and get everyone else in a MPP against him the turn before the vote. Pretty simplistic and boring approach. I'll look forwards to some better ideas :)

Large Map ... This means longer hours. It is going to be difficult to find the time.

I think I will settle on the place and start mining the sheep.
The forest will be handy to chop in order to get extra shields.

I may be wrong, but I looked at the starting screenshot for a few seconds, and I found out it was a no-brainer : I won't move my settler in this game. A little stat : I moved it in GOTM 19, 20 & 23 ; I settled in 4000BC in GOTM 21 & 22. Being on fresh water is absolutely necessary, being on a hill is very nice ! I won't get any useless coast tile without harbour, and BTW, if I'm not wrong, I'll irrigate those 3 wool tiles (they look like luxes) and get my settler factory ! :)

What's the most efficient strategy to get a UN vote as fast as possible, I'm wondering... Being commercial and scientific, there's no doubt I'll fuel research as quickly as I can (it will definitely be different from GOTM 23 :D ). Trade luxes like mad, so that the AIs can help me to research even more quickly. Maybe a good war to grab some land for a FP, but not much more. I'd rather get a better Medal rank than GOTM rank, but Medal and Jason could disagree with one another here ! :crazyeye: The first wants a quick victory, period ; the latter wants a quite fast victory plus a huge empire aquired quite fast. I guess I won't satisfy Jason a lot. :)

Hmmm... I may need to have a look at the F/S/C values for the non-standard resources. I just assumed it would be a good idea to get the wheat in the capitals radius. From the sound of it that could be a :smoke:

I'll look for the thread.

Edit: Yeah, just looked. The wool is +3F once irrigated apparently, so settling on the spot does give good settler factory location.

Cheers Krystzczov (SP?)

This is a similar situation to GOTM 21. I got a diplo victory in that game, was involved in no wars and basically just researched like mad - libraries and universities everywhere. Settler factory makes expansion easy.

The difference is the emporer level and raging barbs. Could mean I need to be more wary of defence.

In GOTM 21 I got almost every wonder from the middle ages on as I was so far ahead in tech - techs were coming 4 per turn from middle ages.

Right better get back to the Arabs.

Why not move the Settler one West?

West would depend on wheather the water is fresh or not.

If it is an ocean it is not fresh so you would need to build aquaduct - big pain

Well, IMHO moving the settler 1 west puts the town on the coast, but not on a river, so you have to build a duct, and I don't like that.
Moving the settler NW keeps the town on a river and gets all 4 bonuses. I can't remember offhand whether a city founded on a hill gets 1 or 2 food :o If it only gets 1 food then the move NW will probably be needed from what we can see to get +5Food and a chance of a 4 turn SF.

So I'm off to found a city on a hill. :D

With Raging Barbs. It would be nice also to benefit from defences provided by Hills

2 food on the hill, but just remember you have to irrigate the NW plain before the irrigating the SW wool. City on hill does not add as a water link in terms of irigation.

BerzerkerJoe and mad-bax,

Thanks for the insight about the aquaduct. I do think we will want at least one good coastal city to try to build the Lighthouse. Cracker's requirement for the first spoiler that we need to complete the Ancient Age but only know part of the worls/contact some other Civs reinforces this, IMHO, but maybe I'm overestimating the value of an early costal city.

Qitai

In PTW there is a bug which does allow irrigation through cities on hills. I don't know if the vanilla players will be able to do similar or not.

I'll play conquest class. I haven't even tried emperor before, so this may be hard. I propably will settle on the spot. It could become a good sttler factory, just as kryszcztov said.

Now, as talking about settler factories, What are the food & shield output desires to have a good one? and what size should it approximately be, just before building settler? I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask...

Hopefully I can submit at least my QSC. Last time I forgot it, and didn't have a 1000BC save... :(

Anyway, good luck to everybody!

[Edit - misread your post :(] Irrigation though hills is not possible in Mac 1.29

Nope, MadScot and Alan, it isn't possible in civ 3 original... :( It would be a great benefit on this start position...
