SPAIN

This month, you will be playing as Spain, as you attempt to extend the fingers of the Spanish Empire right across the globe, bringing law to the lawless.

Starting map:

And the minimap:

Please note: You may only post in this thread and offer thoughts and suggestions up to the point where you have downloaded the actual starting file. Once you have opened the file, you may still read the thread (and laugh at the naivity ;) ), but you may no longer contribute.

There are no additional installation packs required for this game. :)

Luink to game announcement page.

I really enjoyed gotm20 as Spain, which was my first submitted gotm, even though I lost. Since Spain is not a standard Civ3 1.29 civ, I assume the above quote means no additional packs required if you've played gotm25 or beyond?

Should I be able to see the maps in the 1st post? Either my settings are wrong, or they were accidentally left out. (Or I'm just overanxious and they will appear in due time!)

Probably that last one...

They appear fine now. Who knows.

..... across the globe, bringing law to the lawless.

Okay, we're starting on the coastline of the Iberian Peninsula w/ the Western Hemisphere across the big pond. To the south, we'll find the northwestern portion of Africa. Speculating, of course.

I should switch to those tree graphics. You can see where trees and such are in the fog, unlike in civ3 v29.

Hmmm must be Basques to the west? Watch out for rebellion!

Hmmm....

Tell me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the settler is standing on BG. If so maybe a SW migration is in order before the founding of Madrid. The game resource will still be accessible by the cultural expansion, which (if there isn't a +food bonus to the tile currently SSW of the settler) is nicely timed with the population growth.

Edit: It just hit me after the post that maybe moving the settler N onto the forest might be the better location, at least in the short run. But since less tiles are visible to the north, maybe I'll scout it out with my worker first.

And is that a desert I see SSE of the settler?

Hmm... religious and seafairing.... maybe a culture victory is in order.

pindicator brings up a good point. In PTW, Spain is Religious and Commercial and in C3C, they are Religious and Seafaring. Which of these characteristics will we be playing? It seems that we are moving towards C3C in the GOTM.

I bet SSE is a coastline. I will leave the rest to the seers who do so much better than I can.

Will we be playing a more historic scenario, continents map, or not, perhaps archipelago? It seems time for an archipelago map again. And what better time than with a seafaring(?) Spain?

edit - What graphics terrain pack is that Ainwood? It looks great.

Hmmm, dry start, no rivers, interesting. Note also that the 'no rivers' feature means we'll have to work a bit before we can make full use of the commercial trait. If we are lucky *this* peninsula will also have its Po somewhere. ;)

This is going to be my first GOTM game, and I'm really anxious to get started! Any chance of knowing the settings for this scenario (barb activity, land mass/area/type/properties, difficulty level etc), or is it all a surprise?

The starting location is interesting - I also think it looks like the start point is a Bonus Grassland tile. If that's the case, I'm really in a quandary as to whether the settler should move North or South. By moving North, we might reveal some bonus sea tiles, like fish or even Whales - but to the South I think I see some desert, which might mean Flood Plains.

Does anyone have an idea what the tile North-NorthWest might be? IMO it looks like plains or Desert - could be some bonus resources there aswell, it's hard to tell.

Good job ainwood, I'm looking forward to Thursday :D

I agree with Leif Erickson: that tile SSE looks to be a coastline, I'm just not familiar with the snoopy graphics (even if they are pretty!). I bet that NNW is also a coastline as well... which makes me more incline to move the settler N instead of SW on the first turn, because that give more land area to Madrid.

But that also makes settling due South a viable option if it is indeed coastline I see, so I will send the worker south first to explore and make sure there are no immediate bonus tiles that I would miss by going north, then make a decision.

Sounds sensible, but if there's nothing down there, and you move your settler North, you've lost 2 worker turns. 2 worker turns = 66% of a road or 33% of a mine on the starting (BG?) tile.
I guess the risk of losing a bonus resource makes it worth losing those 2 turns though, but it's an interesting problem for discussion.

Law to the lawless... sounds like raging barbs to me

Level---it's time for Deity (yikes!)

Land masses: 3 big continents and the British Isle.

Opponents: US, Aztec; England (good clash/match to our Commercial trait, Expansionist adds to our technology "challenge" + the ones who did Spain in in RL); France (same Commericial trait, plus Industrious--hope she's not modded to be aggressive or we are in for a long month).

Who will play the part of the Moors? Cleo, Shaka, or the Prophet's heir (If you come from the Sunni side of town)? My bet's on Arabia.

Toss in the Mongols and the Koreans for spice and it should a lot of fun (well at least one word of this prediction will come true).

It has the feel of an islands map to me. Moving the settler N to start looks tempting if you can get the deer wet. No way of telling until the worker goes on the game however.
It's a bit tricky really. If you move the settler north and chop the game forest you will have to get the second warrior out on turn 10 to put the forest shields into a granary. Can you do this without delaying growth? Dunno.

I hope this isn't a deity game. The last Spanish game was deity. You can have too much of a good thing. :)

Not the Italian Peninsula, Iberian (Ebro River maybe). ;) I'm thinking, as someone mentioned earlier, that the settler is standing on a BG tile. May need to move SSW.

Are we going to play through all religious civs? Third in a row.

I'm going to scout with both units as I'm definitely not settling on bonus grassland. I just hope there's fresh water in the southern coastline.

I'm at work atm, and am curious as to which techs a Commercial and Religious civilization starts with?

Anyone care to check it out for me plz? :)
