Gray Man:
"One who has voluntarily surrendered his or her soul in order to become an assassin in serving the Shadow. Gray Men are so ordinary in appearance that the eye can slide right past without noticing them. The vast majority of Gray Men are indeed men, but a small number are women. Also called the Soulless."

This is a conversion of the "Spy" unit from C3C. All I can take credit for is switching the palette, the rest I owe to Firaxis. The unit has been altered so that his body is made up of shadow, similar to the "Shadow Swordsman" that was released a while back. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks, :)

Great idea for a unit. Much better fit for the Grey Man than the Shadow Warrior. I like it and downloaded it. It might find a home in my mod as something.

Is it legal to change the colour of a Conquests unit and then make it available for download when people might not own Conquests? Just a question, I have no clue.

It's been done before with other versions units. The African units that Sims did and the Shadow Warrior, and the Ghost units that were done by somebody.

It's been done to Vanilla-civ3 -units. IIRC the modifications of PTW-units were disallowed until the introduction of C3C. I think that this gray unit is balancing in the line between ok and not-ok.

I hope it's ok then, I would think the coloring would make useless for anything but fantasy mods.

Well, you could download this and just change the palette back again, presumably...

I see. Didn't CamJH say he changed the weapon? I haven't had time to look that close yet.

:hmm: ... Does that mean that all C3C units are off the market, so to speak, when it comes to scenarios and mods too? There were a couple of Conquest units that I was planning on putting into the WoT Mod, but then again people would just be able to download the mod and have access to C3C units.
-----
EDIT: I'm guessing we'll be safe though since it will be required to have C3C to play the Mod since that's the editor we're using to construct the whole thing. If this unit becomes an issue, I can just pull it from here and add it to the mod seperately since the player will then be required to have Conquests.

In this regard, the answer would be no. You don't have to include Conquest unit graphics files in a mod's zip file because the player already has those graphics files in his/her Conquests folders. You just have to tell the mod (via biq & animname stuff) where to look for the graphics files.

But being able to play the mod isn't the issue. You don't need Conquests to download a Conquests-only mod and steal the unit files (as your pre-edit remark makes clear).

To be safe, you'll probably have to only use non-altered Firaxis units and recolour only fan-made units. Didn't Kinboat or utah make a medieval-era assassin unit that you could use?

You can include units with the .ini
The MA Longship is included in the WH2 Mod with this .ini (in a Longship folder), and none of the actual flc's:

Precisely what I mean, but said ever so more clearly. Although the problem still remains of the re-coloured Conquests unit. (What conquest is that spy guy in, anyway?)

I see what you mean with the ini file, and that's what we were planning on doing anyways. No point in putting together a pack of units in the download when everyone has them already in their system. I just wasn't thinking that clearly since I had read and posted right after waking up this morning. But yes the question of re-colored Conquest units is still out there. I might pm a moderator just to make sure.

And I believe the Spy unit is from the Middle Ages Conquest. It's been a while since I've played them all, but I believe that's correct.

The guidance we have from Firaxis/Atari is that non-released PTW, and C3C, units cannot be released without their permission. Simply changing the palette is not good enough. You can *base* units off existing units, but you must make *significant* changes to them, such that the base unit is unrecognizable, or at least cannot be reconstructed from the new unit. I will dig up the specific language if necessary.
