#17 Spoiler Discussions

I'm not sure what you ment in your post Starlifter but you can't trade maps unless both you and the AI has Map Making,

Ohhhh duhhhh.... what a bonehead... I forgot about MM! Usually I get stuck with it by this point.

I've really been cursing those Sioux in particular.... I've been gifting unbelievable amounts, even to some non key civs! An no one would ally with me, and in general most are just cantankerous.

I've danced around MM and HBR and Masonry this whole game, to save science cost, LOL.... hmmm.... I should have just taken MM... everyone wanted to give it to me. And maybe should have tried the Super Ironclad strategy of la fayette's.

Thanks Chofritz!

And we're back.

1720 -- 14 cities, 7K gold, 47 techs; the ai has four wonders (LH, GW, GL & Or) the rest are either mine (6Ren, 4 Ind) or still available STWA, SoL).
1730 -- Elec discovered.
1740 -- 8M pop. Still Supreme, still Spotless, still quietly minding my own business; all 6 ai’s still around, ranging from 1 to 7 cities, 21 to 35 techs.
1750 -- Refridge discovered
1752 -- Tactics
1758 -- Amph W
1762 -- Steam (approx 1900 beakers for discoveries) also starting to stretch our wings.
1764 bought thebes
1766 -- RR; 12M pop.
1772 -- AT
1784 -- Ind. discovered. 56 techs 20 cities.

1798 -- back to democracy -- had an oops. bought an American explorer, but didn’t remove him when asked -- so half a world away my government collapses.
1802 -- Comm
1806 -- ESP (a good name for spies, I agree)
1812 -- 32 cities, 60 tech. Sent some food (2 per turn) to Cardiff -- now at size 38 (can’t seem to click over the two elvi -- I guess I’ll cut off their extra food).
1820 -- Min; some of the demanded caravans are arriving at my customer & paying off $990g. The undemanded ones are paying off at $330g.
1822 -- Refining
1824 -- Combustion. I held back a few camels; wasn’t sure if one can get multiple advances with trade per turn, or only one through trade & the multiples through grunt science power.
1828 -- Automobile. 40 cities, 66 tech. pop. = 33M. Supreme/Questionable (guess I’ll build the Eiffel Tower for 25 points at end of game) four ai’s left, ranging from one city to 7, 32 to 39 techs. Takes about 2720 beakers per advance.

(left my log at the wrong location; also switched to fundy after another oops (thebes was in unrest for two turns during the dismantling process (one space away form four specials -- the whales were unobtainable from any other location)).

It is now 1850 & only one Sioux city (size 12) remains. The unrest has subsided from the switchover & now maybe we’ll grow just a little & see what happens next. I have about three boats of trucks waiting to visit -- and two thirds of the world still need routes.

BTW, that's because only the 1st 16 Tax/Sci/Elvii can be used. For a full terrain use city (20 workers on terrain), that means size 36 is the largest which you can use all citizens. #37 and beyond cannot be clicked, changed, and do not even provide luxuries. They do caount a one point to final score, though. :)

1824 -- Combustion. I held back a few camels; wasn?t sure if one can get multiple advances with trade per turn, or only one through trade & the multiples through grunt science power.
Good move, because you cannot have an advance on a turn with deliveries. The extra science is not used. Example: Suppose it const 1,800 beakers for an advance. You have 1,700 accumulated. You deliver a 900 caravan, bringing the beakers to 2,600. No advance will ovvur, until the next turn... and the extra 800 will be lost forever. :(

I rehomed all of the food caravans from one city (-1F, + a bunch of faces). I wonder (a to do list item for next game) if I go ahead & do that for more than three, maybe just maybe, we'll have a new definition of food basket.

Follow on thought along same lines -- after the food express, use the "extra" growth for more engineers -- take a break after a few turns, build some more food, rehome to save arrows, & repeat. Maybe we can try this a little sooner than next month (each turn is now taking me approx. 1/2 hour -- I figure I have about a dozen turns available before I leave town (back in early July). :)

What you have discovered is actually called the FCT (Food Caravan Trick).

The FCT is using lots of food caravans from one city to make another city grow, particularly to unnatural (e.g., sizes that the city's food supply could not have supported on it's own) sizes. Food caravans are OK, and using them to help cities that need food are OK, and using them to help cities grow is OK... but since Civ does not properly penalize the home city when lots of food caravans are delivered from the same source city (including re-homed), this has a special name, the FCT. :cringe:

Most people, including myself, don't use the FCT to make cities grow in GOTMs, particularly to large sizes (personally I don't use the FCT at all). In the Civ 2 HOF games that score above approx. 16,000 to 18,000 do use the FCT to get those large populations, and that is about the only place you see people use the FCT. The only to achieve mega HOF scores is the FCT, so it's accepted in that instance (see Shadowdale's 26,000 game). Here is the Civ 2 HOF. In general, if you see cities much above 42, the FCT is being used. Any city above 46 is impossible without the FCT; sizes 44-46 are, for all practical purposes, impossible without it.

:)

I can see where there are some gains to be made -- but I also see the cost. for some of those high scoring games, we must be talking about hours (strong plural) per turn.

Am i imagining things or am I using the fish square in both Cardiff and Cork
Ive loaded a zip file with the two cities resource map and a map which shows just the two cities on the home island.
Cork is a mine city (mine in progress) .
I'm doing way worse than last game but have Lighthouse, COL, GW, Shak and COP wonders in KELL, so there is some hope.

P.S. i like to call mined cities PJC (Prince John's Crusade) if used offensively

Lord Valuna,
I have seen this behavior in other games, where along some line both cities can use the same irrigated square, mines, etc, and I always look for it. In my Cardiff area, I do not have that magical line -- haven't looked at your zip. Good luck for you, though!

Hmm, that could be better than the airbase trick (which has been dissallowed) In mycase its sharing a fish a knight's move away from the capital and a hill city within mining in progress.
If anyone can figure out when this happens.
I Have the .sav files leading upto so i can look at it latter, if I can get gotm17 done in time. (near 1500A)
ps. good luck to Gary in your chess tournament!

The double resourse use is becasue of the vertical 0 line (or Meridian). The game treats any city on one side of the line as being able to use the resourses and also allows a city on the other side of the line to use the same resourses (even ones across the line). It doesn't use its overlap rule when city radi go over that line.

This was my first GOTM. Having never given a rat's a** about score when I play, what are some of the common things guys like me do that make for an efficient win while accidently killing the game score??

I've seen reference to pollution being a "no-no." To what degree? Does the same go for the side-results of using Fundamentalism? If so, I know my score will bite. I won comfortably (for me) by conquest in 1921. I used Fundamentalism (via Statue of Liberty) to get the upper-hand and fill the coffers (which I over-did). I also pushed production and let the pollution pop up (with enough engineers to clean promptly).

The strats I usually use:
Keep a starting NONE settler.
Churn out cities early with rather thin defense (could have been thinner in this GOTM).
Focus initial research on Monarchy. Then Philosophy =>Literacy.

Wonder Focus:
If at all possible: Great Library, Richard's Crusade, Mich's Chapel, Statue of Liberty, Bach's Cathed.
If able: Get Pyramid (rarely do), Leonardo's.
I almost never go for Hanging Garden, Colossus, Lighthouse, Grt Wall, Sun Tzu,Marco Polo.

Go Republic when most cities have Market.
Sacrifice Tax & Science for Luxuries for a few turns to grow cities with "We love king"
If I get Statue of Liberty, I generally go Fundamentalism and attack with heavy emphasis on diplomats. (in this GOTM, I stagnated in this phase for too long).
I try to get Industrialization and immediately build Factories in all cities I can stand to (usually all producing >7 shields).
MUST HAVE HOOVER DAM.

I build virtually no city walls.
If I get the Grt Library, I slack of on the science bldgs until I smell "electricity."

I love CivII because there are so many variables. More details that I care to go into here. Been playing for years (since release), and still learning!! I've just decided to try out GOTM to learn about the scoring aspect of the game a little.

Any posts, hints, links, or directions appreciated!

Please send all GOTM to Duke@Civfanatics.net

Matrix has already forwarded a couple games to me that were sent to him in error.

Oops. I think I sent my GOTM to Matrix, through the GOTM site. Has this been updated to automatically send to Duke?

Would I need to re-send to Duke, if I accidently sent to Matrix this month?

Just to be safe, please send them to me also. Matrix has forwarded me some entires he has received.

And, no, the site has not been updated to send the saves to me.

I also play your strategy -- I like planning for my Settler from None. However, this is not the way the top players do it. I am trying to conquer gotm17 with Dips and Caravans.
I never bother with Great Library, go right for Monarchy, Trade, and Hanging Gardens. If possible, the Pyramids. Colossus is best, but I had been in the habit of spotting it to the AI.

Welcome to the game!

Well, I'm thru AD 1000 now, actually a little past AD 1100... this month will be a conquest too, as some things have come up for this week.

This game is pretty much a low scoring one, with a medium about of perfecting cities. Just not enough time (in real life) to spead aut and settle everything :(. The conquering is going fine, and everyone are science midgets. The Sioux get all my tech except for Fundamentalism. The most time consuming things are trade and squeezing all the shields I can out of IPRBs. I found out that the Zulu city was so profitable in trade that I could not affort to kill it off for a very long time... and then the trade routes shifted to the Sioux, and then the Egyptians.

Money is not a problem, but since almost everything is going into imporvements and caravans, expansion and settler production is pretty low. I wound up gifting the Americans a lot, in anticipation of rapid science, but got backed up due to lack of gold. In a risky move, I gifted the American my good tech, including unbuilt wonders like JSBach. I had to do this because they had the Great Library, and gifting the Sioux would just give tham the tech for free. So I at least swapped maps with them, and had a bead on where my Ironclads would be sent.

And here's the progress of my capital:

Just sent my games to the Duke. I also ran out of month before the game opportunites disappeared -- Like Starlifter & GaryNemo (send in your game before you go!). Ended up a conquest even though a trip to the stars could have been undertaken oh well!

Ended up with a couple of future techs (left behind Stealth, Combined Arms & Environ) which opens up a qustion for the general discussions -- what dead end techs should one leave behind in a scenario where futre techs can be had (& 5 points each for score)? :scan:

Well, I started yesterday, played ´till 1AD and am close to finishing. My elephants and crusaders have already wiped out 3 civs, 3 more to go. And they are all eagerly building wonders for me to capture!

The map is far TOO BIG to finish a full game that´s why the try for early conquest but trying for a decent amount of points nonetheless. :yeah:

This game will be more for fun though.
:D
