1939

Axis are stunned by the outbreak of "Summer War", although, judging from the picture there is still a lot of snow around Viipuri during the month of June! (By the way Soviet and current Russian name for Viipuri is Vyborg). Soviet Spy trained in Tula was captured in Konigsberg. All these brought sharp condemnation by Hitler himself, who has sent a support letter to Finland.

some bombings here and there... :mischief:

Quite surprising developments this turn: defeated France and virtually non-existent Norway had declared on our Italy. This is very unfortunate, because all Italian forces were resting in Alexandria and Vichy France simply had no business in declaring on Axis member after we spared their very existence,. Did someone pay them to declare, I wonder...

Kriegsmarine has finished the last pathetic presence of British Fleet in Home Waters, by sinking the last remaining CL and Transport this turn. "Proud" England now has only Force H in Gibraltar and Mediterranean Fleet in Cyprus. The rest of the high seas are ruled by ruthless German U-boat, as Newfoundland fishermen can attest :mischief:.

Germany can see clearly that Soviets are preparing amphibious invasion in Finland and warning against it in strongest possible terms! If one could somehow justify creating more distant border around second largest city of Leningrad (the capture of Vyborg) -- any invasion in actual Finnish lands will bring Finland in the camp of Axis, even though they still believe in Western Allies ideology. Hands off Finland, Stalin, or else! :trouble:

THE HOUR HAS COME!

REICHFUEHRER ADOLF HITLER'S PROCLAMATION ON WAR WITH SOVIET UNION

July 1, 1940

GERMAN PEOPLE!

NATIONAL SOCIALISTS

Weighted down with heavy cares, condemned to months-long silence, the hour has now come when at last I can speak frankly.

A fresh war by Russia against the small Finnish people could not be regarded any longer by the German Government as tolerable, all the more so as we could never believe Russia to be threatened by Finland.

Today something like 160 Russian divisions are standing at our frontiers. For weeks constant violations of this frontier have taken place, not only affecting us but from the far north down to Rumania. Russian airmen consider it sport nonchalantly to overlook these frontiers, presumably to prove to us that they already feel themselves masters of these territories.

German people! At this moment a march is taking place that, as regards extent, compares with the greatest the world hitherto has seen. United with their Finnish comrades, the fighters of the victory of Narvik are standing in the Northern Arctic. German divisions commanded by the conqueror of Norway, in cooperation with the heroes of Finnish freedom, under their marshal, are protecting Finnish soil.

Formations of the German Eastern Front extend from East Prussia to the Carpathians. German and Rumanian soldiers are united under Chief of State Antonescu from the banks of the Pruth along the lower reaches of the Danube to the shores of the Black Sea. The task of this front, therefore, no longer is the protection of single countries, but the safeguarding of Europe and thereby the salvation of all.

I therefore decided today again to lay the fate and future of the German Reich and our people in the hands of our soldiers.

May God help us especially in this fight!

For months now Axis were keeping a watchful eye on Russia. German intelligence community was tasked with 2 strategic goals: outspend Russia in espionage effort by the margin allowing to investigate every single Russian city and absolutely deny Soviets the creation of Defense Ministry in Leningrad (which grants extra 20% to ALL the cities). Both of those goals were accomplished spectacularly, while Russia was wasting her spies and points in mosquito bites like well poisoning or Factory destruction in inconsequential city of Poznan.

The exhaustive and detailed reports emerging from Abwehr were simply too good to be true. And yet they are July 1 1940 reality: severely impaired by the Great Purge Soviet military command failed to come up with any meaningful strategic defense plans. All the available units of Soviet army, safe for city garrisons in interior cities, were all assembled in newly acquired absolutely indefensible, 0-5% culture defense ex-Polish cities -- with a big sign: Destroy Us! All the genuine Russian cities possessing intrinsic 40-60% cultural defense bonus were left virtually empty, including objective cities, like Kiev*, simply begging for Blitz attacks. There is no first line, second line and screening force defensive deployment. There is no strategic reserve. Troops in places like Lvov were placed in the vulnerable pockets, surrounded by hostile culture on three sides. To make matters worse great number of potentially defensive troops got stuck in Finland, lots of Machine gunners in Viipuri protecting I don't know what. By the time they get back to defensive positions it will take them 5 turns to acquire maximum 25% fortified bonus. Hopefully our newly developed :strength: 23 Panzerkampfwagen IV medium Tanks will get there first.

Timing is everything in war planning. Order of battle (which will be released after this game is over) shows that by July 1, 1940 Soviets still enjoyed considerable advantage in numbers (but not in quality). Disparity was especially profound in number of planes and infantry divisions, slight disadvantage in Armor numbers, balanced numbers of surface warships. Given that German economy is now second in the World (after America) Axis were not planning to attack until they catch in their numbers and discover few critical techs. However Summer War in Finland was too good of a present to be wasted. Finland acts as a seductive poisoned carrot for Russian Bear -- if anything Helsinki had to be captured as early as possible to attack Germany when she was busy with France. Diverting resources from her core cities to gain useless Finnish land at the time when Germany just finished her Western campaigns was the worst timing possible. So lean mean German War machine has swung into action even before our troops could be fully deployed. All the 3 Baltic States were liberated during this turn:

Tallinn
German Losses: None
Soviet Losses: almost entire Baltic Fleet (1 BB, 2 CL, 2 DD, 2 TT)
4 Air force Wings (B-25, SB-2, I-6, MiG-3)
2 Inf.II, 1 MG.I, 1 MG.II

In real life Tallinn was pre-war main naval base for Russian Red-Banner Baltic Fleet, but there was no famous Soviet evacuation of Tallinn this time. The War in Russia started when German destroyer Z-1 crossed into Russian waters and reduced Tallinn defenses from 5% to 0%. German Pocket Battleship Lutzow appeared next, but failed to inflict any damage to the garrison of 4 units, guarding 7 ships and 4 planes. Most of the Tallinn 's defenders were trapped in Finland, with no transports to sail back. Out of no where came German transport with 2 Armored divisions, 1 Waffen SS and 1 Cavalry and destroyed Russians in the victory that will be forever remembered as Russian Pearl Harbor: almost entire Russian Fleet (safe from couple of submarines) was scuttled by Soviet Sailors trapped in Tallinn's harbor. What a disaster!

Riga
German Losses: None
Soviet Losses: 4 Air force Wings (4 La-7)
1 AT.I

Perhaps Soviet command thought that Riga is well out of reach of German units protected by 2 tiles of Russian culture. So just a petty garrison of 1 Anti-Tank brigade was left to guard 4 wings of Lavochkin La-7 fighters, best fighters presently available to Russia ( :strength: 12 vs. :strength: 14 German FWs). Positional trench-heavy WWI era is over. This is the time of motorized warfare where light vehicles have 4 :move:, Trucks and armored land transports have 3 :move: (+1 for troops they carry), while combat results can flip the culture of border tiles from one side to her enemy. 1 Armored Vehicle is all that took to capture Riga.

Wilno
German Losses: 1 Inf.II
Soviet Losses: 3 Air force Wings (2 La-7, 1 MiG-3)
4 Armored Units (BT-7, 2 BT-2, BA-67)
2 Inf.II, 2 RedGrd.I, 2 MG.II, 1 AA, 1 Communist Militant

The last Baltic Republic was delivered from the hands of Bolsheviks thanks to the very effective self-propelled StuG III assault gun (Germany's most produced armored fighting vehicle during the real World War II). Luftwaffe did not participate in this battle, which involved all the highly promoted veterans of hastily redeployed from the West.

Unfortunately Germans were not as lucky in their quest for Objective City Kiev. The capital of Ukraine was protected by a single MG.II unit. German command made a great use of Tarnopol salient, owned by our Balkan satellites. 2 light vehicles (4 :move:) and 3 armored land transports (3 :move:). were confident they will capture Kiev, but city still holds :crazyeye:. One light vehicle withdrew, 1 Sdkfz-222 died with highly favorable odds. When Russian Machine Gunners were finally silenced -- City Militia emerged from size 9 city (making it size 8), when they were killed another Militia emerged and got killed, but now the third one emerged in the size 6 city. So capture of Kiev must be delayed for the next turn.

All the effort was made to encircle tremendous amount of Russian units traped in the salient BrestLitovsk-Lvov. Nazi Paratroopers came from the skies to destroy escape routes, Luftwaffe and StuGs pounded defenders in Brest-Litovsk, German Tanks killed 1 AT.I and 1 Cav Div. there. Our aim is to recreate the real life disaster suffered by Soviets in Kiev and Minks pockets, lets see how it will go.

Luftwaffe carried many raids in the opening hours of the War, destroying 3 Air Force wings in Brest-Litovsk (2 La-7, 1 I-16), 2 in Lvov (Yak-9, I-16), 2 in Novgorod ( SB-2, B-25), and 1 in Kishinev (I-16). Together with the land forces Germans were able to annihilate 19 Soviet Air units vs. 3 damaged German Air Wings :goodjob:

After learning, that in the first hours of war of the air raids of enemy twenty six airfields of region (Western Front), and aviation, which were under his command have lost seven hundred thirty eight aircraft, of them five hundred twenty eight on the ground whereby the aircrafts were mostly of new types, the Major General of the aviation Ivan Ivanovich Kopets elected to commit suicide in his office. Thus he avoided not less tragic fate of his command mates of the Western Front General of the Army Pavlov and Major Generals Klimov, who will be sentenced to death by firing squad by the order of the Supreme Court of the Soviet Union during academia's turn, we expect :cringe:.

mmm... it´s pretty obvious that i did many thing wrong here.
i understand the capture of tallinin, as i spotted your ships and transport last turn. you explained that pretty well in the report.

riga... you moved trucks from poland, right?

wilno... with StuG III assault gun you bombed and reduced the defenses, and later used mech inf to attack and conquer the city right?

i was aware of the tech issue when it comes to aircrafts.

mmm... i´m pretty screwed here, hehe :D

i´m trying to understand what could i´ve done better.
as you pointed out, mobile artillery and mech inf look like key elements. i invested a lot in aircrafts, but your units are way superior.
maybe should had spent more time in air techs?

sorry for not being up to the task... what a civ4 rookie i am! :suicide:

The main thing is deployment and focus on meat-grinding defense. Ex Polish cities need to slow down initial invasion, but never should be filled with units, when my culture is touching those cities. Wilno-Brest-Lvov-Kishinev is for slowing down only. First ring of actual defense must start on Riga-Novgorod-Minsk-Kiev Odessa line. Units promoted to defend, with 0 MP, if necessary. All the defenders need to use maximum 25% fortified bonus -- this cannot be taken away with any bombardment, plus their cultural defense, plus extra defense from Defense Ministry. No point in investing much in planes which still inferior to Germans, it's better to build anything that can defend and research for T-34 and good planes. Rushing Ministry of Defense by all costs. Preparing second line of defense around Dnepropetrovsk-Kursk-Leningrad line. Mobile reserves somewhere in center. Closer cooperation with UK. Few Trucks for fast re-deployments. Home Spies for critical cities.

Things are far from being over, as you can see I could not even capture Kiev with 5 units vs 1. You have huge stack around Leningrad. I did not even researched Ju-88 yet. America is ready to declare on me. France is choking Italy in naval blockade. I could not capture Cairo, which could be my fourth objective and instead stupidly wasted my troops on non-objective Alexandria, which I don't really need. So game is not over yet, but last turn was one of the most exciting in my PBEM carrier. Nothing feels like attacking USSR when you are German or USA, when you are Japan. But with Japan yo often start at war, here I was waiting for the right timing. I was waiting for your last email with the turn very impatiently, checking it every 10 minutes. When I saw you have exactly 4 units in Tallinn -- I knew this was -- no sooner, no later moment.

i see, thanks a lot for your feedback :goodjob:

i focused on getting air superiority as i wanted to prevent your bombardment.
i see you mention culture as a key element... is that so important in this game?

and yes, dont worry. i´ll keep on playing :D
i know i still have many units, so let´s see what can russia do!

Guys, what happened with our game? Don't you wonna know what will happen next?

Academia might be doing some defensive planning, who knows :)

And yes, culture basically tells who controls the tile and sets the front line. Because of combat influencing culture directly -- the culture dynamically changing every time you win or loose some particular engagement. During the initial race for Poland it was paramount for me to capture cities before you and make second cultural expansion before your captured cities will do -- in order to have direct access to your borders cities, without any buffer tiles with your culture.

Academia might be doing some defensive planning, who knows :)
some weeks RL could me more hectic than others, that´s all :D

here´s the turn report:

5,000 Red Army officers either executed or exiled to Siberia after first week of the Nazi invasion!
After the humiliation of the Red Army imposed by the Wehrmacht, Stalin decided to set an example and clean the glorious soviet forces from the pity capitalist affected minds that created this useless defensive strategy.
In order to save our motherland, blood will have to be spilled.

Wilno and Riga liberated (for how long?)

Not for a long, obviously.

Riga, Wilno, Lvov, Kiev captured by Germans. Viipuri was deserted by Soviets and recaptured by Finns. Kishinev was likewise deserted and joined Rumania.

Germans reached as far as outskirts of Bryansk but did not risk attacking the city.

Conquest of Kiev made Axis to own 4 Objectives already :goodjob:

During this week Soviet losses were too numerous to count :p Germans lost 1 fighter and 2 Infantries with favorable odds.

Part of Soviet units from deserted Lvov was able to break through encirclement.

This week Albert Speer released marvelous report on Third Reich's Economy. German :hammers: production outpacing closest rival by more than 2 times :crazyeye: What an impressive triumph of German efficiency and outstanding Home Front organization!

ok, this is useless. i should have played this scenario in SP before (and even more civ4). i obviously dont have enough experience in this scenario. as i said before, sorry for making this PBEM a crappy game for you guys.

regarding the game... you cant sell buildings to get gold to rushbuild new units? you cant destroy roads? like in civ2?
i mean, is there a real way to apply scorching earth tactics in civ4? i don´t think so, and that´s BS.
how the hell can you slow down an invading army if you cant blow up your own bridges and roads?

turn report? just some killings here and there.

enjoy the conquest of russia.

Don't worry ... and just play ... we are all learning and having a little bit of fun away from RL. We can always relaunch the game at a latter date.

It should be noted that Tigranes is a very experienced multiplayer, an I am essentially more a "modder" than a game player and yourself a newbie to multiplayer, like me. We are all learning from each other and when we decide together to do a relaunch we will.

The scenario created by Tigranes, could probably do with some small tweaking (e.g. better house rules that we can agree on), but it is in essence very well put together.

I am not that experienced multiplayer. My first PBEM with Civ 4 was the game I played with kiwitt -- the (old) Earth 2010. Before that I played 2 WW1 games in Civ3, and lost both.

I am pretty sure you can pillage your own improvement. Will check about roads. By the way I did not get any save so far...

I am sorry about your frustration. I never finished playing this scenario with a win, but I did try all the 3 sides, you have seen my Soviet economy, right before a war was supposed to be declared. I did contunue that game and was able to crash Germany in 3 months. About this time in the other game as British I can usually pay America to declare on Germany, after 1 year USA signs permanent alliance -- I get tons of techs plus crazy 28,000 gold from AI America by simply asking :crazyeye:

The more I study this scenario the more I like many parts of it. Some things are not finished, unfortunately, for example Naval and Air civic does not give you any bonus, and should not be used by players. Also that nasty bug with bombing buildings (I don't get it in hotseat as England). If you surrender I would definitely start a brand new game as Russia with most of the same house rules -- I am not sure which one kiwitt does not like...

I honestly think the main key is how excited you are about particular game. I read Pedia alot, and this game has a good one. I build certain units and give certain promotions in my test games just to get a feel. And I end up doing a lot of thinking even when driving to work (shsh, don't tell my boss about it).

I am pretty sure you can pillage your own improvement. Will check about roads. By the way I did not get any save so far...
i´m talking about city improvements. that´s something that used to give me extra money in civ2. when you see that you are being overrun, destroy all the roads and city improvements, so you leave nothing to the enemy.

anyway, i know i´m kinda hot headed, so you are going to see a few rants here and there :mischief:

but as i said before... no chance to apply a scorching earth tactic in civ4, right?

Your own Roads are destructible but improvements can be destroyed. Neutral roads and my roads can be destroyed. Creating many Spies and pillaging improvements later when the road finds itself under my culture is a possibility, though. Did you research resistance movement yet? I don't see actual famous Soviet partisans when I capture your cities. Drafting cities to max is another possibility -- I will get angry faces, but you will get Infantries.

Axis captured Bryansk, Vyazma and Kharkov without fight this turn, and Brest-Litovsk finally fell after bloody siege. Major setback near Odessa -- after heavy losses the survivors of Soviet counter-attack retreated back to Rumania. German striking force reached outskirts of Tula!

2 British destroyers were sunk in Canadian waters.
