Help, the trees are stretching!!

So, Warlords boots fine and plays fine, but there is what appears to be a graphics bug: The game contantly re-arranges the trees within a forest tile (normal) but instead of those trees just popping out of the ground and then stopping at normal tree height, they stretch out horizontally out to infinity, causing black lines across the screen, really inconvenient.

Running this on the new Intel iMac, had no problems on the old G5

This is on the Intel core 2 duo processor, 2GB of RAM, ATI,RadeonHD2600, 256MB of VRAM, help...

I don't imagine anyone here can help, since it's probably related to the software and its interaction with your video card. So far, pretty well every new video card delivered by Apple has caused problems with Civ4 graphics.

Have you contacted Aspyr? Since they are supposed to be working on a patch right now, it would be as well for them to be aware of this problem before they release it.

(FWIW, when the MacPro appeared the trees were half buried in the ground until the next patch lifted them up)

This is the problem I just referred to in my thread here:

Unfortunately, it appears that Civ IV Warlords is not compatible with QuickTime 7.2. Outside of downgrading to 7.1.6, which I REALLY don't want to do since it involves reinstalling OS X, we may have to wait for Aspyr or Apple to provide a fix. If everybody with a new iMac has the same problem, I think Aspyr will have to do something soon. We can start the ball rolling by calling Aspyr tech support at (512) 708-8100 and letting them know.

Edit: I just realized that the only other update I did since the game worked properly for me was update 1.1 to 10.4.10 which changed the way decimal numbers are rounded. Hmmm...

NwabudikeMorgan, have you gotten any help with this problem? I finally got through to Apple, reported it and got a case number. I also talked with Aspyr about it, but I don't have anything to show for it yet.

I'm having the exact same problem with trees to the point where I can't even play the game. It boots up fine, but once you get into the actual game then the trees start stretching until the screen is filled with lines and you can't see anything. I don't have Warlords installed and I've installed the latest patch.

This annoys me because I love playing Civ IV and it worked fine on my old Mac (an eMac), even if it was a bit slow at times.

What kind of Mac/graphics card?

I contacted Apple about the issue and they gave me a case number. I suggest you do the same. If enough people report it, it'll get fixed. I really suspect the 1.1 update to 10.4.10 since Apple says it "Addresses issues when rounding decimal numbers for display in certain applications."

P.S. If you haven't called Aspyr, it couldn't hurt, either (phone no. above).

Did it this morning. :)

I had exactly this problem and put a ticket on the Aspyr website. They sent the following reply and it worked for me;
Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot fully guarantee functionality on the new Intel iMacs with Radeon HD 2400 and 2600 cards. As with all new hardware, it is untested with current software and functionality may vary. Know, however, that we are working diligently to ensure full compatibility in all titles. At this time, I would recommend checking your Apple Software Update, and checking Apple.com for any related updates to Quicktime, etc. There is currently an update available at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacsoftwareupdate11.html

i have the same problem on normal dual core AMD-pc, running win-xp, ive even seen it in other games too, thought it was DX-related, but guess its not then maybe, hmm o_0

Interesting. What video card?

nvidia 7900gt + dual amd 3800+

I believe it's a new problem on the Mac because I never experienced it or heard of it before July and the others reporting it have brand new machines. Once again, we're catching up to the PC folks. :badcomp:

its about same time it started here too
Could it be some odd componant installed with BTS that sometimes can affect OS regardless of platform, or maybe some multicore-issue due to some software? o_0 just guessing here

No BTS yet for Macs. On our side, I suspect Apple's 1.1 update to OS 10.4.10 which "Addresses issues when rounding decimal numbers for display in certain applications" was the cause.

I am pleased to confirm that updating your Apple software does indeed solve the tree stretching problem. I'm now happily playing Civ IV and will possibly be late for work tomorrow as a result of staying up all night on it. :D

That's great! Except for me, I don't have an iMac.

Edit: I just had a long talk with a 2nd level tech support guy at Apple and it looks like they may be able to help us X1900 XT folks out too. Eventually.
