Fifteen teams started out on this exercise in nuclear mayhem. One Russian team stalled at the starting line, the other only managed the first 120 years. Two other teams didn't make it to the end.

All eleven finishers met the Conquest objective while nuking every city they captured :goodjob: Congratulations to all who stayed the course.

This game's Gold Laurels go to Murky Waters who had laid waste to the world in 1834 AD. Xteam take the Silver Laurels with a 1883 AD finish, and Unusual Suspects win the Bronze award with their 1933 AD date. Chokonuts are trying to make the Wooden Spoons their own, with another lowest scoring result. There were some very close finishes, with Smurkz losing the Bronze by just one year. There were only 37 years between the eight teams from third to tenth places.

Here is a summary of this game's award-winning teams:

Nice game, big thanks to the staff! :) :trophy3rd:

Congratulation to Murky Waters on another extremely well played game. :goodjob:
And also to all who survived... ;)

This one was a bit more difficult than some and there was some great discussion and learning opportunities. :high5:

:thanx: to the Staff for another excellent game experience.

kudos to Gyathaar for a great concept. :trophy:

Yep - I learnt a lot from this one, and enjoyed it muchly as well. That makes it a good game! :goodjob:

Congrats to those who made it to the end.

@ozbenno - at least a win was recorded!! In this one, some didn't even achieve a wooden spoon ;)

@MW - well done - again - very impressive effort.

So what did the winning teams do right and what did the rest of us do wrong?

Yamps has put a lot of thought into analyzing the various games in our team thread. You could do worse than start there:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8685757&postcount=800

Also post #810 Yamps makes summary/comparison with MW game.... and extensive discussion with folks from many different teams explainng their decision-making is found in this thread.

Very interesting and enlightening reading, and a lot easier than sifting through all the individual team threads yourself trying to figure out what they've been doing the last 3 months.

Hope you find the answers you are looking for.

(And no, I don't really care what our team thread hit count is... I'm just trying to be helpful). :D

Congrats to the award winners :goodjob:
Thanks for the link Kcd_Swede

Conratulations on the SGOTM staff for comming up with this challenging and extremelly interesting game, you have set the bar high for the next one!

Congratulations to MW and XTEAM for playing far better than all the other teams and deservingly winning gold and silver!

And congratulations to ourselves, the unusual suspects, for winning bronze, even by a massive dose of luck...never mind I will take our luck happily and wish us even more luck in the future :D

COngratulations to all teams on this challenging game! Many million thanks to Gyathaar and AlanH for the game!!! :goodjob:

AlanH, would it be possible to automate a graph of # of workers a team has, through time? I think this may be one of the most revealing statistics.

Indeed, tx to the staff and congrats to all players and the award winning teams. :w00t:

We (OSS) tryed hard to bring the Wooden Spoons at home but helas, that will be for another game... :D :eekdance:

My congratulations to the winners, what a pity that our team is scattered in all directions ;)

So what did the winning teams do right and what did the rest of us do wrong?

It looks like Murky took the approach of Shotting Communism for the Kremlin. This to allow State Property as well as better whipping.

If you look at their graph you see they didn't ever have to have even :eek:400 hpt :eek:at least at any of the break points (of which there were many). I'd be interested to see what the max hammers they could put out at the start of the MP was.

This doesn't discount their largest advantage which was the hemming in of Ghandi early. This was something a few teams did, but nobody did it as well.

They then pop rushed to build oxford to tech and in some of the commentary seem to have out-beakered their ability to finish MP on time.

They also settled on the other continent in some minor spots and did a very good job keeping AI city count down.

The three key things for this game seemed to be
-Controlling Ghandi from Turn 4 on
-Rexing properly
-Managing beakers/hammers in the most minimal manner possible.

One of the mistakes the corporation teams made was to see the huge hammer cost of the nukes and assume that mining inc, sushi, etc. was needed to overcome such a large hammer cost. Murky proves again that complexity is in execution and simplicity is in concept.

I'm not sure there was a right answer to what to take from lib. There were arguments to be made all the way around. Communism was never discussed in our team as corporations were thought to be required very early on. Economics and Rifling seemed to be the most common ones.

Teching was the big problem with this renaaissance start. Murky Waters wanted to avoid teching to factories and corporations. So how to build a 337:hammers: nuke? With Kremlin and the State Property +10%:hammers:, a 4-poprush in a normal city = 361:hammers:.
That means a pop14 city with a workshop or two can poprush 3 nukes in 6 turns or even 4 nukes in 8 turns, including a bit of overflow and growing your pop back up a bit. Your capital and your HE cities will produce even more. So you need about 9 or 10 such cities to produce about 36 nukes in 8 turns.
That was the key realization for Murky Waters. Plus, realizing that knights and riflemen were plenty after dropping those nukes. And Chemistry and Astro gave us privateers to containing AI growth.

We didn't need all those other techs. Only Communism.

Why doesn't either Trash team of Geezers get the wooden spoon, since they basically played their turns right until the near end?

To be fair Trash team were down to 2 players near the end. We got swallowed up by Indian culture which killed our game. I had never used nukes before which didnt help. Late game wars is not something I am used to.

Need to look at MW thread to see what they did better. (Lots) lol
