SGOTM 22 - Caput Mundi

The highest rank on the Civilization IV score table is called "Augustus Caesar", and now we know why: Turning Rome into Caput Mundi, the capital of the world, has proven to be an exceptionally difficult task! Only two teams survived the scenario, so we don't have bronze laurels this time.

Anti-TSR won the game in 1605AD. Utilizing espionage based research to the max and lightning fast warfare on multiple fronts against vastly superior foes allowed them to end this nightmare victorious. Great game guys!

TTfkapr won in 1878AD. The amazing part about this game is, that the team realized relatively late how hard it would be to win the game. They fought a tough uphill battle and had to race against the clock when they nearly ran out of time. We should give Anti-TSR platinum just so you can have the gold, because you deserve it as well!

Three teams were overrun by the AI:

"Nice try but no cigar" awards go to Insolita Suspicatur, who got defeated in 1984AD, and Fifth Element, who lost their last city in 1842AD

Xteam gets the wooden spoon for a defeat in 1050AD

All of you played excellent games and would have beaten any normal scenario with ease. Remember: It won't get worse than this!

Cool... a new icon... close but no cigar- except maybe the close part is being a bit generous.

Congrats to the two teams that won-:goodjob:

Needed a new set of spoons.

Congrats to everyone that survived and great games played by the winners. :goodjob:

Thanks to the Admins for hosting the game. :goodjob:

Terrific game play by Anti-TSR.

BSP was able to come up with a winnable but extremely difficult game -- not easy, but probably what SGOTM should strive for.

Congratulations to especially Anti-TSR, for once again stringing the AIs around their fingers, despite an exceedingly tough scenario. Well done guys!

:smoke: to some of the others.

As an outsider I was also pleased to see that, despite early negative feedback on the scenario, it seems like all teams enjoyed it once it got started, although it turned out much more difficult than we could all have expected. Well done to BSP for making yet another groundbreaking and interesting map

Thank you for the game, AlanH. I appreciate your enduring sponsorship of SGs. Thank you for the challenging scenario, BSP. Thanks to all the players!

Thanks to BSP and Alan H for a truly amazing scenario. It may not have turned out exactly as you expected but it took all of us out of our comfort zone (i.e. steal workers, tech trade like mad and beat down on the AI) which is a good thing for an SGOTM in my book.

I'm impressed with how all of the teams stuck it out until the bitter end. We had one failed city capture and we were about ready to throw in the towel. Had we been faced with some of the situations other teams faced, I'm not sure we would have had the motivation to finish. Hats off to all!!! :hatsoff:

Congratulations to the winners of this brutal to-the-death tournament!

Promises, promises ;)

Congrats to all players for toughing out this game! I am very impressed to see no Retirements, which to me shows that players from all teams bought into the game concept, even if only a couple of teams managed to avoid being conquested.

Thanks to the admins for keeping this competition going! :)

Thankyou to AlanH for hosting this game and BSP for another excellent map.

Well done to all teams. TSR for an amazing game and the other teams for playing to the spirit of the SGOTM. Tough game for all. TTFKAPR got lucky to finish this one. Some real nervy moment for us this game.

Loving the new awards AlanH. :goodjob:

Maybe a Noble/Prince game next time. BSP will find a way to make it deity level or above. Start each Ai with 2 settlers but give us much quicker techs from a lower level. I am sure BSP already has a game in mind.

You're actually somewhat close to what I had in mind. But I am not sure if everyone want me to design another one. And that's not fishing for compliments. I think the reactions to my games were mixed. Maybe a majority wants someone else to design a game?

WHat I had in min d would be more of a 'builder' game.

At times you just have to create a map and see what the players/staff think. Whoever you ask here will have an opinion. Chances are the next person will have a different one. However they are not making the maps.

Just make it fun and a challenge that teams can rise to. Just don't leave teams too much in their comfort zone.

Well. if you would rather be playing, we can find someone else. But if you enjoy the role as mapmaker for SGOTM's, I don't think there are a lot of people standing in line to take your place. Maybe zero, atm. So state your intention to play god again, or ask for someone to take over.

OTOH, if Duckweed is willing to put his money where his mouth is... it could be VERY interesting.:mischief:

I agree. :agree:

Map needs to be both challenging for the top teams and winnable for the rest of the teams. Almost incompatible requirements.

SGOTM is great and worth continuing even if only two teams participated.

Proposal:
Let's identify a map maker over the next two weeks! (is that enough time?)
Then we can start discussing the next game in February.

Anyone interested in being mapmaker for SGOTM23 please PM me and kcd_swede.

:thanx:

Atta boy! Good work on SGOTMs. Keep 'em coming!

Was a mapmaker found??

Any dates set yet?? I guess a pause for Easter does no harm? Good to keep the interest up.

Always war monarch game could be interesting with the right settings. Need to avoid RNG deciding the game.
