A tsunami warning has been issued for north-eastern Japan after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck off the east coast of Honshu.

The tsunami is predicted to have a wave 1m (3ft) high. Those in the warning zone should move to high ground, Japanese TV said.

The area was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami last month which severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Thursday's quake was 118km (78 miles) north of Fukushima, 40km offshore.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), which operates Fukushima, says it is checking on the situation at the damaged plant following the latest earthquake.

The quake was strong enough to shake buildings in Tokyo.

Another one?

Another one?
Yup.

A tsunami warning has been issued for north-eastern Japan after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck off the east coast of Honshu.

However, there has been no detectable effect at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant damaged in last month's quake and tsunami, nor at two other nuclear plants in the area, officials say.

The Japanese authorities have ordered an evacuation from the warning zone.

Fukushima workers were also evacuated.

The tsunami was predicted to have a wave 2m (6ft) high.

Thursday's quake was 118km (78 miles) north of Fukushima, 40km offshore. It was initially reported to have a magnitude of 7.4 but has now been revised downwards to 7.1, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was strong enough to shake buildings in Tokyo, 265km to the south.

Japan's meteorological agency issued tsunami warnings and advisories for a stretch of coast 420km long, from Aomori prefecture in the north to Ibaraki prefecture in central Japan, just north of Tokyo.

Hundreds of aftershocks have shaken north-eastern Japan in the wake of the earthquake on 11 March, but few have measured higher than 7.0.

About 28,000 people are dead or missing, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless after the tsunami which ripped through Miyagi prefecture.

Poor Japan. :(

A 7.4 earthquake is a big one by itself, much less as an aftershock. Any Tsunamis reported?

Hopefully most people will be out of the way.

There are now several nuclear reactors besides Fukushima and a nuclear waste reprocessing plant (producing hazardous MOX fuel) in trouble due to power failures:

The epicentre was pretty close to Fukushima, so I wouldn't personally be surprised if the tremors complicated the repair work at Fukushima Daiichi in some way. The repair workers have been evacuated temporarily. There is no news on whether any further damages to Fukushima Daiichi were caused by the earthquake yet.

Yeah, especially considering the devastating Loma Prieta was a 6.9. That is an absolutely massive aftershock.

Christ, another earthquake?

I'm just waiting for Japan to sink.

Yes, big quakes keep happening there. And tectonics haven't been quiet in and around Indonesia either.

Japan just can't get a break. Any progress made was likely disrupted by this I assume?

Hopefully this time around most of the people are somewhere safer, so if there is a tsunami, not so many will die.

That's a damn big aftershock.

My heart goes out to the Japanese people. This is just terrible.

Scary to think this will all happen to us in Washington and Oregon within time.
