I decided to play a game with Spain on Prince difficulty. I know there are people that do write ups for Deity and Immortal, but I am not at that level yet. I figure if I do a write up, maybe I can get some insight as to what I could have done better or even suggestions as to what I could do next. Plus, with a posted write up, I'll be more likely to finish off the game than "rage quit" at some point.
To that end, here we go.

My initial spot has gems and marble visible. I am on a coast line next to a river. A lot of trees. There is a mountain nearby. Possibility for getting mountain related wonders. I will need trapping to know if there are any deer or fish nearby. Not sure which luxury will be the monopoly. I'm thinking gems as I've never seen marble as the major monopoly in any game yet. I may settle this spot, but I think I'll move my scout to the other side of the river to see what is near the hill.
The scout revealed gems sitting next to the mountain and another river. I like the idea of sitting between two rivers as it would hamper any early attacks on the city. But that alone does not seem like a worthy reason to lose a turn on settling. Thus I will settle on the starting spot.
Settle, lock citizen on working a forest tile (2 food, 1 hammer), select Monument to build 13 turns, Pottery to research. I believe I will try for Stonehenge for the early faith boost.
Ran out of Madrid's food boost 10 turns to pop 4. Locked the new citizen on the last forest tile available. Moved the scout to the desert tile and found that there is another gem tile with a single plain tile between the desert and a desert with wheat. This plains tile has a single tile access to the ocean. A good spot for a second city and a chance at Petra.
8 turns left on Monument, 10 turns left on Pottery
If that plain tile was good before, it is really good now. Moved the scout to the plain tile and was greeted with Lake Victoria, moved once more to the wheat and found my first ruin on the other side of lake Victoria. May be tempted to settle on the hill next to Lake Victoria as it sits next to a mountain. With Madrid on the coast I don't NEED another coastal city. Depends on what else is around to be honest. I'll go around Lake Victoria as I head for those ruins and find out.
There is a gem tile near King Solomon's mine. Also there is coast and I can see a city state's border. Hopefully, I don't get trapped by the barbarian from that ruin who decided to follow me. There is also a barbarian camp down here. I'll need some warriors soon before they decide to attack me.
Promoted my Scout to move double through desert and snow, also to ignore zone of control. This allowed me to run right around the barbarian and get to that ruin. It gave me 37 hammers. Stonehenge now has 9 turns to go! I feel comfortable that I will get it.
Another barbarian camp. Definitely not settling anywhere near King Solomon's Mines until they are dealt with. Also want to meet UR before clearing them out in case they have a quest for them.
Saw another ruin in the distance to the west of Madrid, I need to explore that area anyway.
Starting to clear east of Lake Victoria. I think the AI has it right. Two 4 horse tiles. Planting on that hill would make for a poor city for those horses. Better to plant where I initially thought and take a different settler for the Ivory and horses. I feel if there is an AI on this land mass that they are north east of Lake Victoria somewhere. Or nowhere as there should have been scouts by now. I could be on a really large island. If that is the case, I need to settle well and plan for some 4th/5th ring grabs of luxuries / resources. I cannot afford to have too many cities and a lot of unhappiness.
I'm 8th in military according to the sages... Not good, but could be a lot worse. Definitely a sign that I am alone on this land mass. I think my policies will need to reflect getting happiness instead of completing trees.
Third city, AI wants me to settle along the coast. However, I don't NEED every city to be on the coast. This hill puts me 6 tiles from Barcelona, 6 is the farthest I ever want to build a road. It is also 6 tiles from another spot in the north east that can get two more gem tiles along with a horse tile.
Settler made it to Barcelona without issue, I'm now deciding where exactly to place the city. The AI has some good choices for the tiles around, However, they don't exactly fit with the grab the most land with the least amount of cities idea. The one by the perfume is too far for a road, the one on the gems would prevent Earth Mother from working (as far as I know) and the one by the other gems would share tiles with Seville. I was going to put it on the grassland between the two gem tiles. However, I saw the fish and the atoll. Those get decent bonuses later on. I'm wondering if it will be any harm to settle on top of the cattle.
That is it for today... I'm curious where others might plant this 5th city given the choices I've made so far. I am leaning towards settling on the cattle. I feel if anywhere along this landmass might have some late water based oil it would be this area. Its the only spot with visible ocean tiles rather than just coast.
To that end, here we go.

Spoiler Turn 0 :
My initial spot has gems and marble visible. I am on a coast line next to a river. A lot of trees. There is a mountain nearby. Possibility for getting mountain related wonders. Settle, lock citizen on working a forest tile (2 food, 1 hammer), select Monument to build 13 turns, Pottery to research. I believe I will try for Stonehenge for the early faith boost.
Spoiler Turn 1 :
Spain's UA to get food when settling means that I am already at pop 2. Locked the new citizen on another forest tile. 10 turns on Monument. Scout moved to the nearby hill along the coast, found another gem tile and a wine tile. There is also one visible desert tile 5 away from Madrid. Possible second city site near there to try for Petra? Who knows yet.
Spoiler Turn 2 :
Ran out of Madrid's food boost 10 turns to pop 4. Locked the new citizen on the last forest tile available. Moved the scout to the desert tile and found that there is another gem tile with a single plain tile between the desert and a desert with wheat. Spoiler Turn 5 :
Nothing spectacular on the backside of Lake Victoria just more forest and plains. The ruins gave me Mining. This is great. It means that once I get my worker I can start improving the gems right away. It also means that if I do wish to attempt Petra in the second city wherever I end up setting it, I can focus on those techs without having to grab tech to improve a luxury first.
Also found my first barbarian, bring the scout back around as I need to know what is on the other side of Madrid as well. Do not want to get my scout backed into a corner and lose precious turns defending when I need to be scouting.
Also found my first barbarian, bring the scout back around as I need to know what is on the other side of Madrid as well. Do not want to get my scout backed into a corner and lose precious turns defending when I need to be scouting.
Spoiler Turn 7 :
Second ruin gave me 37 hammers this puts Monument with 1 turn left. 5 turns left on Pottery, will start pre-building Shrine. If it is not done in time when Pottery is finished, will bump it down to focus on Stonehenge.
Spoiler Turn 10 :
Third ruin upgraded my scout. Its an actual scout now! Madrid expanded borders and claimed the marble tile. 2 turn to pop 4, 2 turns to complete Pottery, 4 turns on Shrine. If I had the 80 gold, I would have bought it down. Alas I do not.
Spoiler Turn 12 :
Pottery finished, if I lock down a coastal tile, I can grow in 20 turns and take 22 to complete Stonehenge. If I lock down the marble tile, I can complete Stonehenge in 17 turns but take 29 to grow. What if I focus on Stonehenge and remember to switch the tile back to growth? I'm not sure of the math but I'm guessing it would be growth in say 25 turns instead. I can live with that. I'd prefer to get the free council from Stonehenge and build the granary if needed for the food. First policy in 10 turns. I'm leaning towards opening Tradition. I'm also thinking of going into Progress for the free worker, worker speed and extra movement. Not to mention the culture from learning tech and all that.
A barbarian is on my 4th ruin, I'll have to do a little dancing to get it to move away. As I move away from the barbarian, I encounter King Solomon's Mines and another ruin. Perhaps, I'll grab that one first first. Also curious what is around King Solomon's Mines, if there is anything additional worth settling for, the hammers and faith would be good to have.
Gambling that I will get Stonehenge in 17 turns, I am researching trapping for 10 turns instead of The Wheel.

Spoiler Turn 15 :
The 5th ruin I spotted gave me a map of the area. The city state whose borders I saw is UR. They are in a crappy location. Looks like they can get an island hill with Ivory. But all that snow, lets hope they end up with a strategic resource for their sake. Did not further explore the small one tile width of land where the ruin was located. I did not want to get my scout trapped by the barbarian. However, that single tile width may be a good location to allow ship access through. Depends on how the rest of the terrain looks. I'm not settling down here right away. Lake Victoria location is prime candidate for a second city.
Spoiler Turn 16 :
Promoted my Scout to move double through desert and snow, also to ignore zone of control. This allowed me to run right around the barbarian and get to that ruin. It gave me 37 hammers. Stonehenge now has 9 turns to go! I feel comfortable that I will get it.
Another barbarian camp. Definitely not settling anywhere near King Solomon's Mines until they are dealt with. Also want to meet UR before clearing them out in case they have a quest for them.
Saw another ruin in the distance to the west of Madrid, I need to explore that area anyway.
Spoiler Turn 17 :
6th ruin gave me a citizen. Madrid is at 5. I told it to work the gems tile. This means 70 turns to grow, but 7 to complete Stonehenge and an additional gold piece. However, I had been sitting at 60+ gold back when mentioning that I did not have enough gold to buy down on the shrine. Somehow, I am at 24 gold. Oh CRAP!, I accidentally bought an ocean tile! Big freaking mis-click. Oh well, nothing to be done now.
Spoiler Turn 20 :
I meet Belgrade as I pick up my 7th ruin. The ruin gives me 62 faith. I can get a pantheon next turn and haven't even built any faith providing building as of yet. This is a big boost. Plus no one else has obtained a pantheon, I'll have my pick of them all.
Spoiler Turn 21 :
Pantheon choice, Earth Mother is a solid choice due to gems being the monopoly. It would only get stronger with any iron and coal resources that may be in the area. Goddess of Beauty is a good alternative since Stonehenge is all but guaranteed and the engineer points from it would stack with those from Stonehenge. Add that to Justice from the Tradition branch and I can get an early GE to rush build another desirable or needed wonder. Failing that, plant on a luxury to get it early. I feel like I have room to expand here so I could go wide. At the same time, a sort of wide but tall seems appropriate. Get my first couple cities down to secure the monopoly and go from there. As much as I like Goddess of Beauty, I really think I should play to the dirt's strength on this one. Earth Mother it is.
Spoiler Turn 22 :
Tradition policy, the two new citizen are working the two ocean tiles, the one coast and the accidental purchase. Trapping finished, since Stonehenge only has 2 turns out, I'm researching Animal Husbandry to find out where the horse are. Then I can decide if I'm teching into possibly getting military wonders or going Trade for a potential Petra in the potential 2nd city which I've yet to get a Settler for.
Spoiler Turn 24 :
Stonehenge complete, Shrine had had 2 turns left, now only has one. Will finish it, get a warrior for protection and start getting settlers out for my cities. The scout is going to try to make contact with UR and scout the rest of the land to the east.
Spoiler Turn 26 :
Met Hong Kong on my way to UR, they gave me 37 gold. Gives me hope that no one else has met UR yet.
Spoiler Turn 27 :
UR must have been a placeholder name or something. I go to a snowy hill which gives me sight and low and behold, it is Sydney instead. Weird. Unfortunately, I did not a get a screenshot of the different name. So let's just chalk it up to bad eyesight which with my glasses, totally believable.
Both city states have barbarians on their door, if I can clear them I can get some influence. Priorities first. Need to get my first couple cities founded quickly before they really put a drag on culture and science.
Both city states have barbarians on their door, if I can clear them I can get some influence. Priorities first. Need to get my first couple cities founded quickly before they really put a drag on culture and science.
Spoiler Turn 31 :
Animal Husbandry finished. No immediate horses. There is a tile of two not far from where I initially wanted to plant a city to try for Petra. But I decided it would be better to settle on the hill between Lake Victoria and the mountain. It would get me two gem tiles in the 2nd ring and a 3rd gem tile in the 3rd ring. The horses would be in the forth. I also get to pick a policy this turn.
My scout found the borders of another city state, need to get past a barbarian camp to get there tho.
There is a 5 horse tile by an Ivory tile on a small bit of land that extending out from near Madrid to where Belgrade is located. That may be a place to settle at some point. Spain needs her horses for the UU.
Justice policy 19 turns till next, The Wheel 8 turns. 3 turns left on first Settler. Already have a warrior which has been used to deter barbarians approaching Madrid. Need a worker for these mines ASAP. Got to get the pantheon working for me.

Spoiler Turn 32 :
Met Kathmandu and spotted another ruin. Still no sign of other civs. Am I alone? Obviously not because someone picked up Goddess of Renewal the turn after I got my pantheon.
Spoiler Turn 33 :
The ruin gave me 100 gold. I have a nice nest egg now. May be able to shorten the build time on buildings in the additional cities. One turn left on my first settler.
Spoiler Turn 34 :
Sending my Settler to the hill by Lake Victoria. The AI wants me to settle on the plains I initially considered, primarily because it will get those 2 horses. I am rethinking that spot now that I keep looking at it. I have till it gets there to decide. Hopefully the scout will find something over there that adjusts my thinking one way or the other.
Spoiler Turn 35 :
Byzantium must be in the game, someone else picked Earth Mother. They are the only ones who can pick a belief that has already been selected.
The scout clears the 9th ruin and am given 130 faith towards a greath prophet. This is a big boost as I've yet to take advantage of my pantheon. 3 turns left on my worker. Thinking of buying a warrior or archer to protect it while building the next settler.

Spoiler Turn 40 :
Manila found. Barcelona was settled a couple turns ago and has just ran out of its inital food boost. It has been building a monument. And I just hit 1 unhappy on the global scale. A worker is improving my first gem tile, it should improve soon. Also built a second warrior. I will use it to protect my worker while the other starts clearing barbarians for the city states. Need to finish exploring this land mass, but I think that I am completely alone. This won't be good for, no early trading to help with the happiness issue.
Since I seem to be alone, Researching trade first since I already have Barcelona to attempt building Petra. Then Construction to improve the Marble and try for Mausoleum.
Since I seem to be alone, Researching trade first since I already have Barcelona to attempt building Petra. Then Construction to improve the Marble and try for Mausoleum.
Spoiler Turn 45 :
A couple barbarians appeared at Barcelona making it starve. Got my warrior and scout there to prevent loss of life but lost a lot of food in the process. Going to buy down on the monument to speed it up and consider buying Lake Victoria, need Lake Victoria's food ASAP. Back in Madrid another barbarian appeared there. The second settler finished and I connected my first gem tile. Back in the happy. I have both the worker and the settler stay in the city while the warrior there takes on the barbarian.
I think I will build an archer to help out with camp clearing.
I think I will build an archer to help out with camp clearing.
Spoiler Turn 48 :
Settler & worker still trapped in Madrid. Killed off the first barbarian there, but there is a second now. The monument in Barcelona I paid on just finished. 5 turns till Trade is done. I bought down on Well in Barcelona taking it to 6 turns. Will start Petra after.
One turn left on an Archer in Madrid. I think I will go for granary since I have two deer. Fairly certain I am alone on this land mass. I can sort of take my time, but not too long. Maybe Barcelona can take over settler production after Petra.

I'm 8th in military according to the sages... Not good, but could be a lot worse. Definitely a sign that I am alone on this land mass. I think my policies will need to reflect getting happiness instead of completing trees.
Spoiler Turn 52 :
Sovereignty policy. Granary in Madrid finished. Starting next settler. Worker after that I believe. My scout has the heal every turn promotion, its going around knocking down barbarians like they are nothing. My archer is making its way to another barb camp. We will see how it fares alone.
Spoiler Turn 53 :
In previous games I had been rushing to get Pyramids for the settler and worker speed boost. Not this game, someone beat me to it. Starting to research Construction. Going to queue Petra up in Barcelona.
Spoiler Turn 56 :
Third city, AI wants me to settle along the coast. However, I don't NEED every city to be on the coast. This hill puts me 6 tiles from Barcelona, 6 is the farthest I ever want to build a road. It is also 6 tiles from another spot in the north east that can get two more gem tiles along with a horse tile.
Spoiler Turn 60 :
Statue of Zeus was built by someone else. I'm siting at 0 happy. My worker has gone on to Barcelona to improve the gem tile there. I'm escorting another settler up to the horse and ivory between Madrid and Belgrade. One more settler to go north of Seville and I'll have all the horses on this landmass. Then it will be a matter of strategic settling to get the rest of my monopoly luxury. Hopefully it doesn't take too many cities.
Spoiler Turn 63 :
Temple of Artemis has been built by someone else. This is not looking good for second tier wonders. Petra and Mausoleum are left. The two I want to go for. I have 3 turns left on Construction with a great engineer coming in 4. I have 20 turns left on Petra which I can just now spend my entire 230 gold to reduce by some turns. Should I? It is risky to be sure and for what? An extra trade route and a caravan with late era culture. I plan to use the GE on Mausoleum in Madrid. Maybe I'll risk the purchase on Petra. I probably won't get too many wonders down the road what with being isolated until I get the right techs. Besides, how can one have fun with a game if one does not take some risks?
Madrid has 2 turns on a worker
Seville 5 for Monument
13 turns till next policy. I'm thinking of opening Progress, get some extra science boost and culture from each tech learned. Tho with these barbarians, maybe authority for some culture there.
Buying down on Petra knocked 7 turns off. Expected to be done in 13 but the first gem mine in Barcelona will be finished in 5. It is already being worked so that should help reduce it a small amount.

Spoiler Turn 64 :
Cordoba settled for the horses near the Ivory. I'm back into the unhappiness. I hope it won't be too long, but as long as I don't go to 10 below I should be able to recover.
Spoiler Turn 66 :
Screwed up on accidentally sent my scout inside Kathmandu's territory. They'll be angry for a few I'm sure. Construction finished, switched Madrid from settler to Mausoleum. It is slated to be done in 11 turns. GE in one. Maybe I'll hold it off for a later wonder. Possibly Roman Forum, Terracotta Army or Great Library. After all, if the other civs went to the other techs, then maybe Mausoleum and Petra are mine. Time will tell. I'm at 3 unhappiness. Might need to consider pop locking until I get more tiles improved and / or buildings built.
I will do Military Theory followed by Calendar. This will give me access to three Classical era techs that have wonders available.
I will do Military Theory followed by Calendar. This will give me access to three Classical era techs that have wonders available.
Spoiler Turn 70 :
Cleared a barbarian camp. It had a worker from Sydney in it. While I need another worker, I opted for the 50 influence points. We are now friends and I am receiving 3.5 food from them as they are a maritime CS.
3 turns left on Petra, 7 turns left on Mausoleum. Seville is building a shrine to help bring in more faith as there are no gem tiles to be improved in the current workable area.
3 turns left on Petra, 7 turns left on Mausoleum. Seville is building a shrine to help bring in more faith as there are no gem tiles to be improved in the current workable area.
Spoiler Turn 73 :
Roman Forum was built by someone else, that one is out of the picture. Petra, however, is mine. Shrine next for Barcelona. The caravan was moved to Madrid. No CS want a trade route and there is currently "wild lands" between me and them. I may go a safer route and send a food caravan to one of my other cities to alleviate the isolation unhappiness until I get some roads built.
Spoiler Turn 74 :
Sydney was offering me gold, science and culture to send a trade route. That is better than a touch of happiness. I'll risk the wilds, besides my scout cannot go anywhere until I research Fishing and get the ability to enter water. It can pace the route keeping an eye out for barbarians and dealing with any.
Sydney also has a quest for 3 walls to be built. This is doable. I have 4 cities, leaves one free for workers / settlers.
Sydney also has a quest for 3 walls to be built. This is doable. I have 4 cities, leaves one free for workers / settlers.
Spoiler Turn 75 :
Progress policy, this completed Military Theory and reduced Calendar to 7 turns instead of 13.
Spoiler Turn 76 :
Monument finished in Cordoba. Walls would take 22 turns, instead I went for Shrine at 13 and bought a worker for Cordoba's use. I'm at 1 gold but making 15 per turn. I'm also 10 turns out from a GP with just 11 per turn coming in.
Spoiler Turn 79 :
Mausoleum is mine, continuing work on the settler that will be sent north of Seville for two gems and a horse. It will have another luxury in its 4th ring at the very tip of the northern edge of this landmass. I'm thinking I need to get into the Classical era. Maybe go for Writing to get the library and possibly the Great Library. Hanging Gardens has not been built but since Roman Forum has been built, someone knows that tech already. It could be a goner soon. Terracotta is still available as is Great Lighthouse. I do need to tech that way to get off this rather large island. Tho I would like to know if I have any iron. May help decide how I settle cities for the remaining gems.
Finished shrine in Barcelona, worker in 6 turns to send to Seville.
Finished shrine in Barcelona, worker in 6 turns to send to Seville.
Spoiler Turn 82 :
Calendar finished, lets take Writing for 14 turns. Started Walls last turn in Madrid to contribute to Sydney's production quest. Sending the Settler to Barcelona to be picked up and escorted by the warrior that has been protecting the worker. Barbarian appeared at Seville, there is a camp above Seville that needs clearing soon.
Spoiler Turn 83 :
Terracotta Army was built by someone else. Glad I went Writing.
Spoiler Turn 84 :
Great Prophet is born, founding first religion of the game.
Tengriism, I like the icon.
Founder belief - Holy Law, it is a safe choice it doesn't require anything specific beyond selecting policies. It is something that everyone will be doing.
Follower belief - Inspiration, I feel that it may go in hand with Holy Law. It will help get policies quicker and thus more use out of Holy Law. I do like the various buildings and may see if I can get a decent on on the Enhancer.

I'm wondering if it will be any harm to settle on top of the cattle.
