Abe loves 2 RoP rape

Until last night I had a nice monarch game going on C3C patch 1.15 as the Persians. I’ve only won once on monarch so it turned out to be a very fulfilling uphill struggle for me. I’m 3rd on the histograph now closing in on number 2 the Americans.

Last night I attacked and destroyed the weak French who share a continent with America to secure oil (I just hate imported oil!!). I signed a RoP with Abe for two reasons: to rail my troops to the last French town and I thought it would deter them from attacking my newly won French territory. America immediately began moving stacks of infantry trough my territory. I wasn’t alarmed because they were at war with the Russians who “heroically” captured 3 dead-end French fishing towns before. They were merely on their way to attack those settlements I thought and for a few turns they did head in that direction……

Then suddenly the “polite” Abe turned on me declaring war while having RoP troops next to my cities!!! This is a first in my experience. The result is a long modern ongoing war which I really didn’t want. The first American town I captured made the Americans sue for peace but hey, now I’m “furious”. I’m faced with a stalemate right now losing and recapturing cities every turn but at this point I don’t care if my game ends in a histographic defeat (as long as America doesn’t win).

I would like some more insights on RoP’s though:

Does signing a RoP with the AI actually diminish the changes of them attacking you or was it just a silly assumption of me? And what about Multiple Protection?

I understand there’s no fun in treaties if they never get broken although I never use RoP rape myself. I guess the Americans don’t like imported oil either.

I doubt you can do much when a civ has dicided to attack you. Sometimes an RoP might even play in their hands because its easier for them to get to your weaker defended cities. Polite/Gracious doesn't matter eighter at certain points.
Once i saw some japanese land close to my city. I reneogated peace, gave them some gpt and a lux for it. They still broke it next turn. Be very carefull with RoP's.

I have never experienced AI RoP rape either but I guess we should expect the unexpected.

According to your military advisor what is your strength compared to the Americans? How are you doing on the tech front? What year is it? Do you want to win or just spill AI blood? J

In general I have no problem signing RoP once territory is claimed. I have always viewed this as a way to improve relations at relatively low risk. Reading Bamspeedy's "AI Attitude" article in the Academy indicates a RoP markedly increases the AI's attitude but it doesn't say it lowers the chances of being attacked.

One thing I have read was speculation that a trigger for an AI to attack was to be passed on the histograph. Maybe the Americans decided to backstab you because they were not keen on you passing them up in score.

Would giving RoP to the Russians, allowing them an easier path to Abe, help your cause? Can you drag any other dogs atop Mr. Lincoln?

I avoid MPP's at all costs. I have played up to Monarch and can control my own destiny for the most part. Getting roped into someone else's war will always happen when you can least afford the costs.

The AI doesn't "ROP Rape" ever. They may walk a unit or two and suicide themselves into your capitol, or maybe even take a non-defended interior city.

RoP Raping on the other hand is using an RoP to position all your units next to every(or nearly so) city, so you can take them out all the cities in 1 turn.

Abe isn't more likely to commit RoP suicide then anyone else, I've actually never seen him do it. I always have Shaka or Monty sneak attacking me for some reason. You just got unlucky.

Whenever you have an RoP with someone and you see them head into your territory just make sure you have all your cities defended by at least 1 troop, that should take away some of the tempation for them.

Undefended cities are like magnetic crack to the AI: even though they know it will kill them in the long run they just can't help themselves.

We're in the 1930's and I'm 2 techs ahead of the Americans and even more ahead compared to the rest of them. Got computers, rocketry and researching ecology>synth. fibers>stealth now. Unfortunately that will take ages since I've changed to communism because of backstabbin' Abe!

My military advisor is not amused ....... weak compared to the Americans.

I immediately got every possible civ involved as I always do if I feel I'm getting into a war I could lose or as a means of keeping my technological advantage.

Although quite far ahead in histographic points I don't see Russia coming to the rescue anytime soon. Sure enough Catherina was happy to declare war for the price of 2 luxuries. A small price to pay for the amusement of seeing her sail around the world in her "antiques boatshow". I'll probably have to defend her fishing towns myself if I feel like it.

You asked me if I want to win or just spill AI blood jb1964? I suppose I still want to win but spill America's AI blood would be a good second this time around.

I do have a really tough time with the American TOW-infantry. I haven't had much experience with it before.

About the only time I'm unconcerned about the AI sending troops through my territory is early on when the Barb camps are around. Killing Barb camps is a high priority for the AI, and I've seen immense stacks adjacent to an undefended city of mine, and they go by, kill the barbs, and go by again on the way home with (usually) no problem. After about 2000 BC, I never take an AI military unit going through my territory for granted.

I've experienced the AI break ROP deals many times. Usually they result in that unit's suicide, but occasionally I lose a city. This leads me to take the position that, just because you've signed a ROP deal with a civ, doesn't mean you have to let them wander wherever they want. If their units show up on my doorstep, I use my units (or workers/catapults/whatever) to keep them from going somewhere sensitive. Eventually they go away, or if their intentions are bad, they attack and I have control over what I might lose. This is real important after railroads are built; I'm almost always Republic, so I don't need MPs anymore, so I fortify oddball units on the main rail lines coming in. That way, the ROP is broken before they've penetrated in to attack any undefended cities.

Steve, Good tactic. Take the leftover warriors, swordsmen and longbowmen and make barriers. You get the benefit of the RoP and a, early warning "rape" mechanism.

Well Globo, as you tell it, you've done what you can and have a long road ahead. Artillery and defensive tactics, until you can get Abe to the table for peace, sounds like your best option.

I guess I’ll make sure to keep a closer eye on the RoP deals to avoid the same fate.

Abe just did it last night, Germany, emperor, huge, random (got pangea), PTW 1.27f. But, its true, it was a suicide (he was actually my partner when fighting Persia, and to go to Persia, he had to go through my land, and I gave him 3 luxs for fighting Persia). Unfortunately, when 3 of Abes units were inside my area, the China had destroyed the persian. For unknown reason, probably because they lost 3 luxs in one turn, he just declared war on me.

Its happened twice to me. Once I was Babylon and the Dutch marched a couple of Cavalry up to a city when we had ROP and attacked. They failed and in retaliation I seized their main cities and Russia finished them off. In my current game as Russia the Ottomans marched up a stack of about 20 horseman to a newly-founded city guarded by one Spearman. To try to discourage them I signed a ROP and gave them GPT. They attacked anyway and got the city. I was able to get the stack to move away by signing an MA with the Otts neighbour France thus saving my lightly guarded core and later my Knights wiped out the Otts entirely. Revenge is indeed sweet.

I used to think that the AI wouldn't abuse an ROP. Then it happened to me in a Fall of Rome scenario. As the Anglo-Saxons I had a ROP and alliance with the Franks against two successive enemies over 50+ turns. Then, out of the blue, the 'polite', allied Franks RoP-abused me, declaring war and having three stacks of warlords taking out three of my defended cities. Cost me the game...
