Am I doing something wrong?

Plus, doesn't one of the leaders of the Deviello (Charadon) have like -10% to research due to his Barbaric trait? I was playing as the Clan of Embers and I know that -10% was a pain early on. Sure I had a small amount of goblin wolf riders harassing my vampire neighbors.. but the rest of the world (we were slightly isolated) were like 3-4x as far as either of us. XD
