Byzantine Karavos or Arab Qarib, the mediterranean lineage of the Caravel. In general, it is assumed that Byzantine and Arab ships especially in the Mediterranean Sea were similar in type, shape and building tradition. There are numerous terms cited for common Arab-Byzantine ship-types, such as the Dromon/ Drūmūn, Chelandion /Shalandī (light Dromon. 9-10th century), Sachtoura /Shakhtūr, Karavos /Qārib, Tarida /Tarrīda or Sandalon /Sandal. The rudder was added in the 12th century.
The smaller chelandion ousiakon was so named because it was manned by an ousia (crew) of 108 men; the chelandion pamphylon, was crewed with up to 120–160 men. The dromōn proper, was also crewed by two ousiai. In Constantine VII's De Ceremoniis, the heavy dromōn is said to have an even larger crew of 230 rowers and 70 marines.
