Planes are wonderful if you prepare for them. They require their own sort of logistics, though,
especially when fighting far away from your empire (you'll need carriers or you'll need to capture enemy cities as air bases). If I'm fighting a game-ending war and air units are only just beginning to show up, I'd probably just supplement my ground forces with anti air.
