Has anyone played as Boudica yet? Lots of people were saying before the game came out was how she would be unstoppable with her trait combos. I am curious to see if she lived up to the hype.

I assumed the same thing and, since we shared a continent, i decided to rush quickly before she could get going - then i would have a whole continent to myself However she had acccess to copper/horse in first 2 cities and a decent mixed military - chariots, archers axemen, so w/o catapults, conquest was far too costly. I quitted the game later when Pacal turned up with caravels while i was still teching metal casting.

I've been playing "Bo" since I got the game on Tuesday. I got this stuck in my head to get a good showing (score) with one leader before I try another. I'll be trying new leaders in order (of course). A bit too anal I know.

But one thing that surprised the heck out of me with "Bo" is that the Gallic Warrior (My personal favorite since Civ III) gets her butt kicked way to easily by axeman. Hence why I had to start over just about every day this week.

I like to build up on my war specialist for whom ever I'm playing, i.e. Gallic Warrior this time. I had about 18 Gallic Warriors and set out to take care of the bottom of the heap which was my neighbour Japan. After razing one city my invasion became a marathon campaign. I was hoping to hit at least 3 or 4 cities before my reinforcement had to come up.

I just got done playing again. This time I used a mixed stack of Gallic Warrior, Axeman, Spearman, and a few Long Bowmen. I'm sorry to say, after about 18 total units I had basically the same results.

My guess is, (Moral of the Story) Build lots more units than I did before, before I attack even a weak opponent.

She's tough and she will declare war on you. I used the AP to declare Holy War on her with about 5 others and she became a vassal of someone else.

(Re: the first couple of replies)

Sorry if I sound condescending, but isn't it obvious just by looking at the unit description that the Gallic Warrior is a horrible UU? The bonus means nothing. The Swordsman, which it replaces, is an offensive unit to begin with, so even if the Gallic ends up defending on a hill, thus making use of its bonus, chances are you didn't want the Gallic to defend.

Anyway, I have certainly noticed that the AI is using mixed stacks a lot more. I think this is the root of your problems. Before BtS, melee units were king because the AI seemed to only build Archers and Spearmen. But now, the AI spams Axemen itself, meaning it can counter Axes/Swords much better.

In the end, this means you just plain need more units. When the defender's stack is more mixed, it means there will always be a perfect counter to your attacker. The only way to overcome this is with numbers.

InFlux5 - they definitely have their uses, albeit a specialised one. Highlands maps, the Gallic Warriors make a strong showing.

I'm a casual player, but using a mix of axes and swords I rolled right over Tokugawa and his archers on hills behind walls. The thing is, if you run out of places to conquer, she's not got much going for her. By the time I could mount an overseas assault, Charlemagne was a little too firmly entrenched and had built the @#$##@@!! Statue of Zeus. :)

In my only run in with her she seemed too aggressive. She started two wars she had no hope of winning (one with me), and was promptly crushed both times.

Not to mock the long dead, but that seems eerily historical doesn't it?

Boudica has good traits, Celtia, not so much. Unlink leaders on the custom menu and pick a civ with a good UU/UB combo and you'll be happier.

if u play Civ u cant be a casual player lol its all or nothing.

Anyway, Ive been playing in my current game and I'll say this, she's nice. Ofocurse I've built up a very long standing relationship with her. However she does scare me. See. She expanded Quickly, aand out of no where she burst out enough units to where if i went to war with her my bordering cities would be gone instantly. Her navy is roughly the size of my own now, my own fault pesterign people with Privateers lol. She does declare war on people she does not like. She had a war with Julius Caesar, and she was pleased with im the turn before. But he also switched religions, and started trading with babylon.

If it weren't for the fact that im better than her She'd kick my arse lol. well she has musket men and i have infantry thanks to mass spy production destroying her civilizations ability to do.

Btu overall... She isn't that unstoppable but she is a worthy foe.

Try being enclosed between her and Catherine, those two chicks just don't like peace... somehow i survived a 2 front war...

Playing a Boudica game right now (read Futurehermit's thread) and she's kicking ass sofar. Stack her UU with chariots and spears and the enemy cities will drop like dominos. Her traits are just awesome. :)

How well I will do when longbows etc. enter the game is an entirely different story though, but right now she's a monster warmonger.

I haven't played as her yet, but I played vs. her one game. I was in a protracted war with Sulavaraman or whatever his name is (do we have an abbreviation for him yet?!) and was getting worn down in troops when Boudica the opportunist declared on me! That was pretty much game over for me because I couldn't handle her large...stacks at that point :D
