Bug with automated explore for ships? They like the poles and get stuck there

Am I alone in being frustrated with the automated explore button for ships? Whenever I press it my ships will decide to explore the polar regions rather than looking for new continents. What's worse is that they seem to get stuck there; I did a test last game and even after 60 turns on a standard map my caraval was still at the poles near tiles I had already discovered and not actually exploring.

I know the solution is to explore myself, but was wondering if this is a general bug? And it doesn't seem to affect my land units.
