Problem:
Freezes after clicking "Begin your Journey", since trying to use a mod.
Story:
Last week I tried to use "a mod of ice and fire" which I had previously used without any problems. However when I went to start a game last week it froze my game immediately after I clicked "Begin your Journey". I then tried frantically to get it to work, changing versions, going back to (G&K) etc. I eventually gave up and decided to use another (GOT) mod. This also crashed. I then tried a LotR mod. This also crashed. I tried a scenario. Also Crash. Interestingly though when I try to create a new default game it does not instantly freeze but closes civ5 after a couple of seconds.
Things I've tried:
1) Unsubscribing to all mods
2) Removing Local Content through steam
3) Turning off steam cloud sync
4) Manually deleting the Civ5 files in the Steam folder
5) Running as administrator
6) Using a different DirectX (When I tried that I got all sorts of weird stuff as well as freeze)
After trying all these things in multiple orders, I found that it still would not work and noticed another rather alarming sign that something was wrong. When I launched Civ5 my hard-drive made a terrible screeching noise, which stopped as soon as I clicked "Begin your Journey".

OS: Windows 8.1

SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
