[BtS Mod] Civ-Specific Unit Art

I pretty much have a monopoly on civ-specific things, so I thought I'd continue with my ideas for greater flavor. :D

Now we all know that in BTS, there is a great new feature which allows you to incorporate "Ethnically Diverse Unit Art," so the same unit will look different for different civs, just as Rabbit White has already done. The best thing is you don't have to add new units, only new art styles.

While Rabbit's done first-rate work, I always thought his mod fell short in one area: the units are not civ-specific. They are culture-specific. Obviously, this won't make much difference in the early eras (I can't imagine an ancient American archer would look all that different from an English one), but it makes a HUGE difference by the late game.

Furthermore, Rabbit, White is reluctant to do anything about it. Here's what the master himself said when asked about making modern units:

Spoiler :

1) Crazy amount of work - I'm already finding it hard to get any decent amount of free time to work on EDU and there are still many more other civ related stuff I'd like to do. Including some stuff that I promised, and have yet to deliver.

2) Despite the fact that some people do in fact have knowledge of modern warfare technology and can tell an American tank from a British one, that's not the majority of people. Plus there's the fact that these are just machines - at the end of the day it's much less of a bother if the Spanish use T-34 than if the Russians use a Spanish looking explorer unit. ;)

3) There's a limited number of art styles available - there is not eastern and western European styles, there's just European. Now, of course theoretically you could create such styles but then they would have to be identical until the modern era, which is a lot of units to do with two styles that are actually one style. That's not to mention the many other similar cases across other styles. So again, it comes down to #1 - crazy amount of work. :)

4) Finally, it is beyond the scope of this mod - my idea was always to more or less limit this to "human" units and more ancient and medieval ones, rather than modern or even the renaissance. The original EDU (vanilla/warlords version) had some modern units because there were several very good ones and I wanted to include them but in this version I still haven't decided if I want to do that. And again, part of the reason is that I just don't know of how I can do it efficiently without having to create 20 new styles or coming back to essentially a UU-like system.

All right, that's fine. I can understand his reasons. I guess I'm just "one of those people." :) For me, one of the big selling points of a game like Civilization is the immersion. Playing as America should have a distinct feel to it, completely different than playing as the Greeks; even if their units are exactly the same in strengths and abilities, the simple cosmetic differences help immerse you in a totally different world. It bugs the crap out of me when I see the Americans flying around with MiGs instead of F-15s, and the Japanese using Spitfire-style prop fighters.

The aim of this mod is to collect and implement unit art from all over, so we can finally have Civ-Specific Units. (We don't have to replace every single unit, just the ones that need it the most.) Each Civ will get its own art style tag.

Important Note: Please make all the suggestions you want. However, I ask this: only make a suggestion for a unit that has already been created (or is about to be created), and provide a link to the specific file/thread on CFC or Apolyton. I can't afford the time to go unit-hunting for everything!

If you really want a unit that hasn't been made yet to be included, go bug asioasioasio, Chugginator, or Snafusmith about making it. ;)

Obviously, for the modern era there are a lot of civs that don't need a specific unit. (What does a modern Carthaginian tank look like?) And if you look at my list closely, you'll see that many of the African units are the same for the Zulu, Mali and Ethiopians. However, there will still be significant differences, particularly when it comes to the Europeans.

So to recap:
We will be starting out with a cultural-specific system like in the EDU mod, but every civ-specific unit that is available to be added will be. I may also add GeoModder's excellent diverse citystyles mod later on, and I'll likely include my Civ-Specific Great People mod.

And to all the naysayers who are going to tell me this is a lot of work for a little feature, that it's not all that important, that you don't care about graphics: Go away. I really don't care if this sort of thing is unimportant to you. Nobody says you have to download it. Leave it for those of us who enjoy flavor for the sake of flavor. :)

This sounds like a really great idea.. I'm a big fan of the Ethnically Diverse Units mod, but it's true that it only goes so far.. Civ-specific units (and perhaps even city-styles (imagine the work for that!)) would be a much better modification..

No Dutch units have been made yet, but perhaps I can suggest a few units here in case people are looking for inspiration:

Spoiler :
Musketeer: The Blue Guard: http://www.peter.petrobrigada.ru/gallery/svengard06/vstupai.jpg
Elite Dutch infantry unit that served alongside William III, among such battles as the Battle of the Boyne and the Siege of Limerick..

Rifleman: Dutch infantry http://www.preisvergleich.org/pimages/Dutch-Infantry-Waterloo-1815_203__12467_40.jpg As they appeared at Waterloo..

Cavalry: Dutch Cavalry http://www.britishbattles.com/waterloo/images/dutch-carabinier.jpg As they appeared at Waterloo, based on the French uniforms.

Infantry: KNIL soldiers: http://www.schilderhuis.nl/images/knil.jpg
KNIL (Royal Netherlands Indies Army) were the colonial armed forces of the Netherlands East Indies.. (Looks somewhat like WW1 Australian infantry)

Ship of the Line: The 'Zeven Provinciën' (Seven Provinces) http://www.timedesign.de/ship/de_zeven_provincien.jpg Admiral Michiel de Ruyters flagship.

Battleship: HMS De Ruyter (named after the naval hero).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HNLMS_De_Ruyter_%281935%29 Sunk in the Java Sea by the Japanese navy prior to the invasion of Indonesia..

I'll see if I can find some more.. The only problem, as said, is that, in order to get these units, there will have to be someone who feels up to the task of customizing these units like this..

Yes, it's true... As Red Door said to me earlier, it will take a while for Civ 4 creators to catch up to the of level of the Civ 3 unit creators (number-wise), so I'm sure I'll be adding new units all the time. But, like I said, we'll just find as many already in the database as we can, and add more as we go along! :D

Definitely! Some of the stuff that's been created for Civ3 is absolutely amazing and certainly more than I expected to be created for that game.. Civ4 modders have a long way to go to pick up, but there are definitely a lot of possibilities and, more importantly, a lot of time to pick up..

Here are a few more suggestions:

Spoiler :
General:
Worker flavour units
Flavored rifles
War elephant flavour units
African units
African Flavour units
Arabian units
WW1 units

Russia:
Kiev Russian units
Strelets (Russian musketman)
Russian Napoleon's imperial shooter
Russian Grenadier

Germany / Holy Roman Empire:
Teutonic units
Germanic units
German paratrooper ("Fallschirmjäger")
German WW1 Machinegunner
Franco-Prussian War units
Frederick's Prussians
WW2 Germans
Hungarian Hussar (perhaps good as the cavalry unit for the HRE?)
Bismarck Battleship
V-1 and V-2 (perhaps as replacements for the Nuke and the Guided missile?)

France:
11 France units
WW1 French Machinegunner
Guardsmen of the Cardinal (could be cuirassiers for France or perhaps Cavalry for Rome?)
Napoleonic Old Guard

Netherlands:
French Cavalry (since Dutch cavalry uniforms were based off French counterparts, these could also serve as Dutch units)
WW1 Warships or WW1 Cruiser (I suppose either one would be nicely suited to be a Dutch battleship, since most Dutch warships were quite old by the time they were actually used in action).

England:
Highlander (1800's)
English Grenadier

United States:
Medieval American units (yes, you read that correctly)
Civil War infantries

Native American:
Mesoamerican units

India:
India flavor units

Egypt:
Egyptian units (including a few 'modern' fantasy units)
Egyptian 'what-if' rifleman

Japan:
Several Japanese units

Zulu:
Zulu Ibutho Clubman (perhaps as a replacement for the Sword- or Axemen?)

Spain:
Generic Inquisitor Unit (Perhaps to replace the Spanish Christian missionary?)
Spanish Tercio pikeman
Warrior Monk (Or perhaps a better unit for Rome?)

Khmer:
Viet Cong (Yes, I know, different country, but still..)

Ottomans:
Ottoman Grenadier

That's as far as I looked today.. A lot of industrial and pre-industrial units, but perhaps that has something to do with my own preference for that period. I'm generally not a very big fan of the many different fighters and tanks that are out there (since scaling and texturing is usually very different with each model)..

I think the big concern I have is interface. If every unit looks like a UU, you have to spend a little too much time learning what the heck everything is. Interface should be so intuitive that you aren't even aware of it being there.

Another side point, I think the African units you've shown are generally only useful for tribal societies like the Zulu. The Malinese and Ethiopians should have a more Abrahmic look (Judeo-Christian for Ethiopia, and Islamic for Mali), with less of a tribal look.

In general:

- beards
- tunics and robes
- sometimes, head-wraps

The goal of Modern Warfare (and soon Beyond Modern Warfare) is to give all civs unique modern units. So you can certainly gleam stuff from there...

If you really want a unit that hasn't been made yet to be included, go bug asioasioasio, Chugginator, or Snafusmith about making it.

Just an FYI, I'm incredibly reluctant to take requests lately - I just don't have the time. So much so that people who have bugged me repeatedly have gotten their requets added to my 'units never to make' list. So be carefull here.

Sorry, snafusmith, that was Red Door's suggestion originally. :D And that's why I added the ;).

dh_epic also raises a good point: in our quest for civ-specific-ness, we don't want to overload the user with new graphics to the point that units become unfamiliar. I will try to strive for a happy medium here.

Listen I will be releasing a mod in about tops 7 days that will include civ specific units for every civ. This will start from ancient times to modern times. Some civs like Carthage and Spain will share units while others like the Romans will have there own. Some units like the F-16 will be America's jet while a civ like the Zulu's will use the generic version. I have completely finished the Ancient and Midievil Era's unless Darnell creates some more of his awesome units. So that leaves me with the gunpowder and modern units which is half the work.

I will include some screenshots here to give you an idea of how far I really am.

Wow, that's really great work Cafegio! I'm looking forward to seeing what your mod has to offer.. Any chance for a preview of the Dutch units? :D

Well, darn, now I'm going to have wait and/or start over... where's that anticipation smiley?

Well, I'll tell you this much.. go ahead and work on your flavor units because this won't affect that. It will strictly affect unique units, and even then, you can still go ahead and design them how you want.

For those that are interested, there are a couple cool dragoon units that would be good replacing Cavalry for the English and French Empires.. Riding around (The rare times I do, I am an infantry kind a guy) is annoying with the American Cavalry..

I plan on replacing any unit for any civ that I find better than the original.

No chance of seeing the dutch civ as I am still waiting for replacements better than what I have right now. But I will give you some more screen shots.

Cafegio,

I am looking forward to you mod, but I have a question. Did you create a new Unit Art Style Type for each civ? And if so...how?

Cafegio,

Yes it is quite simple actually. Example I started with America I went into civilizationinfos and changed the unitstyle to American and than went to artunitstyle and cut and copied the european and changed the name to American.

Here are some more screenies

Great work, Cafegio!

Ave Gaius Octavius !

You may want to have a look at my Warlords mod, as I've added a lot (really) of civ specific units.

I've made a simple excell file to keep track of whose made which unit and which civs use it. I find it usefull when adding units one by one using multiple source ;)

using the nifviewer in the units directory you'll have a good overview of what's in and pick the units you like, using the xls files for credits reference...

Screen example for France (click to enlarge) :
