hello, i've been playing civ III for quite a while and just got into civ II. Can anyone tell me about the different versions, features and differences. thanks!

Civ II is a much better game. 
The main version of the game would be Multiplayer Gold. That should allow you play almost anything out there. An older version of the game is sometimes called 'classic' or '2.42'.

I think i have Civ II multiplayer gold. where can i get patches for it?
Civ 2 "classic"/2.42 is the earliest of the versions. The AI players are not as hostile to the human, but you cannot play with other humans. MultiPlayer Gold Edition has more hostile AI but multiple human player ability. Fantastic Worlds added more scenarios, and Test Of Time improved the scenario creation features and added multiple connected worlds (spaceship to A.C., then explore and build there).
