Good news everyone! :hatsoff:

I made this guide of leader flavors to help you know what to expect from the different AI leaders. This is very useful in diplomacy!

Flavors have the value of 0 to 9.
High number means high focus.

Raw wiki flavor info:
Spoiler :
In Civilization 5 a flavor represents a particular goal an AI player can pursue.
Leaders have preset flavor so that the AI plays Alexander (Offence 8, City Defense 5, Gold 3, etc)
differently than Gandhi (Offense 4, City Defense 7, Gold 4, etc).

Flavors are associated with anything the AI player has to make decisions around such as Units, Buildings
and Policies so leaders with high flavor in a certain area are more likely to build units that
have high values in that flavor.

The AI decisions making process in Civilization 5 is extensive and flavor is only one of the factors.
the goal of the flavor is to make different AI leaders player differently, not to have the AI make bad
decisions.

Every AI will still defend it's cities, even if the City Defense flavor is set low.
Flavors don't have any impact on human players, who presumably have their own "flavors" based on
their own game play styles.

VictoryCompetitiveness
How much AI focus on the victory he aims for, like cultural, domination. Alexander wants to win, but he doesnt value his trait. Napoleon is the most focused, he'll go for any victory possible. (and he seems to benefit from it)

Spoiler :
Alexander:8
Askia:5
Augustus:7
Barbarian:0
Bismark:7
Catherine:6
Darius:7
Elizabeth:5
Gandi:2
Al Rashid:4
Hiawatha:3
Montezuma:6
Napoleon:8
Nobunaga:7
Ramesses:4
Ramkhamhaeng:3
Suleiman:5
Washington:4
WuZeitan:3

WonderCompetitiveness
How much the AI will be angered by other leaders constructing wonders. Building to many might even lead to war. Egypt will sure hate you for it (but their weak anyway). :egypt:

Spoiler :
Alexander:7
Askia:8
Augustus: 6
Barbarian:0
Bismark:6
Catherine:7
Darius:4
Elizabeth:5
Gandi:3
Al Rashid:7
Hiawatha:4
Montezuma:2
Napoleon:6
Nobunaga:5
Ramesses:9
Ramkhamhaeng:4
Suleiman:5
Washington:3
Wu Zeitan:5

MinorCivCompetitiveness
I assume this is how much AI gets angered when you make friends with citystates. Making allies with citystates under influence of (or close to) leaders with high flavor might make them hostile. Augustus and Elizabeth will be most offended!

Spoiler :
Alexander:3?!
Askia:4
Augustus:8
Barbarian:0
Bismark:7
Catherine:7
Darius:4
Elizabeth:8
Gandi:3
Al Rashid:4
Hiawatha:3
Montezuma:5
Napoleon:7
Nobunaga:6
Ramesses:5
Ramkhamhaeng:4
Suleiman:6
Washington:5
Wu Zeitan:7

Boldness
Bold AI's is more likely to declear war on others. Leaders with this flavor high might declear war over the smallest issue. If your trying to maintain peace you should avoid annoying these leaders: Alexander, Napoleon, Nobunaga, Suleiman and Montezuma!

Spoiler :

Alexander:8
Askia:7
Augustus:6
Barbarian:0
Bismark:4
Catherine:3
Darius:3
Elizabeth:4
Gandi:2
Al Rashid:3
Hiawatha:2
Montezuma:8
Napoleon:8
Nobunaga:8
Ramesses:5
Ramkhamhaeng:5
Suleiman:8
Washington:7
Wu Zeitan:7

DiploBalance
This flavor is most likely has something to do with the leader offering or accepting equal trade. If this is correct Bismark will be the easiest to make a fair trade with and Napoleon and Alexander the worst!

Spoiler :

Alexander:3
Askia:6
Augustus:7
Barbarian:0
Bismark:8
Catherine:6
Darius:5
Elizabeth:7
Gandi:4
Al Rashid:5
Hiawatha:4
Montezuma:5
Napoleon:3
Nobunaga:7
Ramesses:5
Ramkhamhaeng:7
Suleiman:6
Washington:6
Wu Zeitan:6

WarmongerHate
Leaders with high WarmongerHate disslike players who: declear war, are in war or conquest other civilizations. Every leader hates warmongers, but to a very different degree. Gandi will get annoyid very quick, Montezuma just don't care and Ramkhamhaeng trows himself into the wars because he hates it.

Spoiler :

Alexander:2
Askia:4
Augustus:4
Barbarian:0
Bismark:6
Catherine:5
Darius:5
Elizabeth:7
Gandi:7
Al Rashid:5
Hiawatha:6
Montezuma:1
Napoleon:3
Nobunaga:6
Ramesses:6
Ramkhamhaeng:8
Suleiman:4
Washington:7
Wu Zeitan:5

WorkAgainstWillingness
I think this is how likely a leader is to make an agreement that involves a third leader, like pact of secrecy, war, etc. Bismark loves to be bribed into war, make sure its you who bribe him.

Spoiler :

Alexander:7
Askia:5
Augustus:7
Barbarian:0
Bismark:8
Catherine:6
Darius:4
Elizabeth:6
Gandi:6
Al Rashid:3
Hiawatha:4
Montezuma:6
Napoleon:3
Nobunaga:7
Ramesses:4
Ramkhamhaeng:5
Suleiman:7
Washington:4
Wu Zeitan:7

WorkWithWillingness
I assume this is how likely a leader is to make or agree to a trade that benefit themselves. Leaders with high flavor will seek to improve their empire trough trading and import and export.

Spoiler :

Alexander:4
Askia:6
Augustus:5
Barbarian:0
Bismark:6
Catherine:6
Darius:4
Elizabeth:4
Gandi:8
Al Rashid:6
Hiawatha:6
Montezuma:3
Napoleon:4
Nobunaga:6
Ramesses:6
Ramkhamhaeng:6
Suleiman:7
Washington:6
Wu Zeitan:4

Please do help me and correct me if im mistaken about some flavors effect!
And do tell what leaders (flavors) you think preform best ingame!!!

This study might enable me to make a better AI if I get a taste of what flavors preforms best.

More or less complete now :)

Flavors analyze!

Very low victory focus: Gandi, Hiawatha and Wu Zeitan. These leaders may preform good early ingame but in the end they will fall behild because their not at all motivated for victory!

High victory focus
Alexander is motivated, but lacks good play. Napoleon is the classic winner

Extreamly high wonder focus: Wonder benefits are ok I guess, but it seems some Ramsess will neglect everything to continue building them, even if their in war and beeing exterminated.

To low focus on citystates: Alexander does not at all appriciate his trait, and when he meets a citystate he will most likely think like this: "I dont want anything to do with citystates, but i might conquest it in time"

Boldness is very good for Leaders who play well and like to qonquest, but somehow Montezuma just dont benifit from beeing bold (as in civ4). Hiawatha and Gandi is a real chickens, not to dangerus to settle cities close to them. (though leaders get way to much upset about this, so war my follow)

DiploBalance: It sure helps AI to make balanced/fair trade, demanding to much usually leads to no trade at all. Alexander and Napoleon is very greedy

WarmongerHate Sometimes its best to ignore other's wars if its not beneficialto join in, the AI might loose valuble trading allies to. Ramkhamhaeng just hate war to much.

WorkAgainstWillingness It's good for the AI to be able to coop in wars and make evil plans for killing human players. Bismark is the biggest backstabber.

WorkWithWillingness Is also a good trait, why shoul'nt they make agreements that benefit themselves. Gandi and Suleiman knows how to make good trades, Montezuma does'nt.

Biases (flavors) for major civilization's analyze!

Alexander
To hostile and loves war to much.
Not deceptive at all.
To brave for he's own good.

Alexander
Not neutral, he at least makes up his mind.

Askia
Not very deceptive either.

Askia
Good balance between war, hostile and friendly (will gain both friends and enemies)

Not done analyzing yet (just started)

Thanks for writing this up, this explains a lot about how the AI leaders behave. :goodjob:

Although I think "MinorCivCompetitiveness" might be their willingness to conquer city states, rather than befriending them. That makes having Alexander at 3 and Augustus at 8 a lot more reasonable, in my experience.

Very nice! I'm not sure if this has already been posted or not, but you present it in a very easy to read fashion. Thanks!

I do believe Bluebird is correct in his assessment. I find that Augustus is usually the big bad guy who conquers city states early.

And Bismarck does love to get bribed into declaring war, but he can't be relied on to actually do anything...

I strongly disagree with this. Alexander is definitely one of the civs to take over city states the most. Usually in my games if any city states are near him, they get wiped out. Him and the mongols seem the worst about it.

Actually strangely enough Alexander has 8 in flavor of conquesting a city state and only 3 in flavor of protecting it. It seems fraxis have made the AI not to aware of his great trait.

I agree. One of Alexander's strongest traits is his ability to get on with city states, but the AI seems to completely ignore that.

Don't you think the competitiveness scores determine how much the AI is pissed off when you do something rather than how much they go for it? Harun, for example, is one of the few leaders to have given me a "you're gobbling up all wonders, freak" message in game and sure enough, he has a high competitiveness. But Gandhi, who loves building wonders, has a low competitiveness.

Similar for city states. If you bribe away one of Augustus' allies he's immediately like "I can't accept your dealings in my sphere of influence" and a couple of turns later he declares war. And Siam, for example, loves to get city states but isn't overmuch annoyed if you bribe away one or two.

I looked at that and while it is very tidy, I'm confused as to why there is a "religion focus". Didn't we do away with that?

Because all leaders actually do have a religion flavor. It just (to my knowledge) doesn't do a damn thing so it's either a remnant from before they decided to cut out religion or they put it as preparation for an upcoming expansion that will bring back religion.

I think so too. Competitiveness influences how angry they get at you for doing something, not how likely they are to do it themselves.

An interesting thing to note here is that Askia has a low wonder flavor (he doesn't like building wonders) but a high wonder competitiveness (he hates it if others build wonders) so he's basically programmed to conquer wonders instead of building them.

Another important thing is that the flavor values listed are just the base values for flavors. In a specific game a leader's flavors can deviate up or down by 2 points. For example Montezuma has a base war flavor of 7, but in a given game his war flavor can be 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. This a big part of why people feel that the AI leaders have less personality than in Civ 4. Ghandi's default war flavor may be 3 and Montezuma's may be 7, but when you encounter them in a game they could both have it at 5.

A few more quick notes on focus flavors:

Offense and defense flavors both deal with building military units, but offense is a flavor for military units in general while defense is mostly the flavor for counter units like Spearmen, Pikemen, and Anti-tank guns.

Mobile flavor means mounted and armor units like Horsemen and Tanks.

Recon is Scouts and American Minutemen.

Expansion flavor determines how many Settlers the AI builds, tile improvement handles workers.

The Roman Legion is the only thing in the game that has the infrastructure flavor.

The difference between naval and naval recon flavors is that naval covers everything that moves on water and naval recon only covers fast ships like Caravels and Destroyers.

Naval growth = Lighthouse, water connection = Harbor.

Nukes have the ranged flavor, Guided Missiles have the air flavor.

Spaceship flavor is used only for spaceship parts.

This a big part of why people feel that the AI leaders have less personality than in Civ 4. Ghandi's default war flavor may be 3 and Montezuma's may be 7, but when you encounter them in a game they could both have it at 5.

Is there any way to change the 2-point-deviation?
That would be so game changing!

There's a file called GlobalAIDefines.xml that has this line:

<Row Name="FLAVOR_RANDOMIZATION_RANGE">
<Value>2</Value>
</Row>

I think if you change the 2 to 0 you will eliminate leader flavor randomization.

Öjevind Lång;9986843 said:
The point deviation existed in Civ IV too and is a good thing, in my opinion. It makes the AI leaders less predictable.

I played Civ IV as well, and I'm still trying if it's worth changing CiV to better conditions, or return to a finished game.

I also do understand the random part... duhuh... and is good. Who ever said I wanted it at 0??? Don't assume please, that's making an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'.
I prefer to tone it down to 1, but what I would really want, is that 1-10 scale change into 1-15, so everything goes into 6.67% increments. And then a 2 point deviation makes less of a difference, but still noticeable.

Like Nunya said, because of the deviation, Ghandi and Montezuma could have equal war flavor, which doesn't feel right to me. And why not mod this as well xD

great format

good read

thanks for the simplicity and not using acronyms

i suggest any thread that has "ics" or other like phrases are useless

thanks

Extreamly high wonder focus: Wonder benefits are ok I guess, but it seems some Ramsess and Asika will neglect everything to continue building them, even if their in war and beeing exterminated.

I don't feel Askia should have such a high wonder focus, more military and economy.
He was known for conquest, not building.

To low focus on citystates: Alexander does not at all appriciate his trait, and when he meets a citystate he will most likely think like this: "I dont want anything to do with citystates, but i might conquest it in time"

"Combat Strength +30% when fighting City-State units or attacking a City-State itself"
This should be Alex' trait, instead of the mongols.
Historically he is a CS conqueror, but ingame, his trait is protector, which is quite the opposite. Historical mismatch!

P.S. It's also plain wrong that in his text, Thebes is one of his conquered states, while ingame, Egypt owns it ^^
P.P.S. The mongols could either get "Receive free Khan when you discover Philosophy", or something which increases horses tiles with a bunch, and any of the above with the +1 mounted movement.

I don't feel Askia should have such a high wonder focus, more military and economy.
He was known for conquest, not building.

Be fair! He built that magnificent fireplace he stands in front of, the one with the threedimensional special effects.
