Comings, Goings and New Arrivals 0x0A: Hasta La Vista, or Welcome Back. I Guess it Depends...

Hello. I recognize some names in here. It looks like it was just short of 10 years that I was here last.
A legend returns

Hello everyone, I am a new user that discovered this forum through random searching, and I definitely see a huge potential in joining this community for reasons that go beyond the Civilization series.

I guess that I can start with my interests:

I love roguelikes, gamebooks, poker, and video games with CCGs. I am very looking forward to participating Junethack, a Nethack tournament, and I am considering playing Shadowverse in the near future. I am also in the middle of finishing up the entire Fighting Fantasy series, and I am getting my hands dirty with Shadow of the Giants. I do not have too much money to spend, so I occasionally participate in a free poker group that meets in real life on a weekly basis to get my fix on.

I also am volunteering for some causes in Nevada, since I have family there.

What I hate? COVID. Since its onset in 2020 (of which I was unfortunately the first people in the US to go under a lockdown), it has destroyed my life, and been the cause of a 20 month unemployment gap that I never fully bounced back from.

Anyway, so that is enough about me for now. Hope to be welcomed here with open arms.

I hereby welcome you with open arms, Airborne56.

I will only welcome @Airborne56 upon him reaching 100 posts in OT.

What are your favorites? (you can drop me a PM when you've got PM privileges; I've been playing that game ever since it first came out 40 years ago.)

Howdy, been a hot minute indeed! :yup:

Welcome back. :)

Work kept me down for much longer than expected, but I am finally back to give my responses.

@Birdjaguar, @Gori the Grey, and @thetrooper, thanks for the welcome!

@Aiken_Drumn, I hope that I can reach 100 posts in OT soon.

@Valka D'Ur, I guess that I can respond by listing out my top 5 favorite Fighting Fantasy copies, now that I have finished Shadow of the Giants and every other book in the series as of today:

  1. Night of the Necromancer: My favorite by a mile. Cool story. Cool mechanics, and the adventure is very much winnable for an unspoiled reader.
  2. Scorpion Swamp: Having three paths that are all easily winnable for an unspoilered reader is a huge plus, and I liked the fact that it was an open-world game as the character went through clearings.
  3. Spectral Stalkers: Also a very winnable adventure for an unspoilered reader, and I liked the way that the endgame boss was defeated.
  4. Creature of Havoc: The story was also good, and the mechanics such as the way the messages were encoded really stood out to me in a good way. Needing high Skill and Luck (both real life and the stat) is the only flaw, but it is a major one.
  5. Sword of the Samurai: This is how I was personally introduced to the Fighting Fantasy series in 2015 since I stumbled on this while I watched a few playthroughs (and later played it myself) of the unrelated DOS game of the same title. Although it is a rather hard book to beat without high Skill, Sword of the Samurai will always hold a special place in the Fighting Fantasy series to me because of this.
