Continent markings in World Builder?!

Hello All

Having a ton of fun building maps for Civ5, but have yet to find out what marking continents really does (there are 4 choices - Americas, Europe, Asias, and Africa's I think).

Does this affect gameplay at all? Does owning one continent change the cultural border? I can't figure out what in the world this feature is for.

It affects the graphics - there are four different graphics sets for terrain.

Ok - that's cool.

The question now is ... have I been playing so long that I can't tell the difference between the different graphics?

Maybe I should take a break.
