CS-2 - The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire

I think it'd be a good idea to go straight for alphabet now and start trading techs. We can at least get Pottery that way and the Religious techs that we'll need sooner or later. Probably Iron Working although we should probably be careful about giving up Alphabet too soon if we don't need to. I have no idea how soon the AIs will be getting it if we don't hand it to them.

It's a shame Frederick is Creative. With the lack of hammers in sweden the only way I can see us getting another city in there properly would be beelining for a Great Artist (well that's what I think anyway, not very experienced with this either :p). That might be a decent option if we're going for Alphabet anyway. Most other civs are probably more busy worrying about their neighbours and getting military techs. Could make for good trading.

edit: Great Artist either from specialists from a theatre or the free one from Music (or what tech is the free one from?).
We might not get to Music quickly enough with our expansion though. We could also go for CoL after Alphabet for the courthouses. And there are probably other things we need :p.

Oh, sure....There are lots of things we need, gunpowder for example. LMAO ;)

Seriously, alphabet would be a good one, since most of the Civs are going to trying to figure out how to live together, or blasting the daylights out of each other. We could also start the whole devastation thing too. If we can force the people who don't like each other to fight it out, we may just soften some people up for our immenent arrival. :)

When in doubt, let you neighbors fight each other, so you don't have to beat them both senseless. LOL

I would go for Iron Working before Alphabet. You really don't know how fast war is going to come in this game and the quicker we get to usable troops the better, also by waiting a bit we open up the tree for a bit more value. Just my two cents. :)

Ok....I can't open the file for some reason. I'm working on it, but I don't wanna hold anyone up while I figure it out. If you can skip me this round, and I'll see what I can do about this. :(

Sorry to be the hassle peeps. :(

I'm not able to play till tomorrow afternoon, so if you figure it out and have a chance to play before then, have at it. :) Otherwise we'll skip you this time around.

Inherited Turn - We should be able to whip the lighthouse in a few turns, though I can't quite figure out how many. I must have my hammers to pop points wrong. In other news, I'll try to get us ready to settle near here, as that copper would be nice to have.

An idea for accomplishing our variant - it might be a cheap way - could be to settle across Northern Russia after our Scandanavian colonies. That way we'd only have Russia, possibly Mongolia and Japan to worry about. Could be easier, but the land might be bad enough that it would make the game harder. On to the turns.

Turn 2 - Writing comes in, and Louis comes asking for Open Borders. While the trade is nice, we can't allow him to take our land, so not yet. Next tech is Iron Working in 11 turns.

Turn 3 - Louis gets the pyramids.

Turn 4 - Freddy comes asking for OB's. I have to say no for now. We can't do any OB's with continent civs until we at least get Ireland. I am going to ask Saladin and Cyrus though. I don't anticipate them stealing our land. They both accept. I also whip the lighthouse for 4 population.

Turn 5 - I start London on an archer, 1 turn, and then a settler.

Turn 6 - Settler in 6 turns in London. It should be in place to settle at the beginning of the next turnset.

Turn 8 - Furs come online and erase an unhappy in London. A turn is saved on the settler. We'll also have silver in 2 turns, so we should be doing much better on happies.

Turn 9 - I whip a lighthouse for 2 pop in Nottingham. It'll start on a settler next turn. That should be the one for Ireland.

Turn 11 - York finishes a lighthouse. London finishes the settler and starts on a library. York starts on a scout to explore the northern frontier to see how far we can settle.

Turn 12 - Freddy wants to trade pigs for deer. I see no reason not to, so now we have pork. Iron working comes in, pottery next for 2 turns and then alphabet. We also have Iron.

Turn 14 - Pottery comes in. Isabella asks for Open Borders. I want to, because I want to get Buddhism. Everyone on the continent is Buddhist. I start on Alphabet. York starts on an archer because I realize it's undefended.

Turn 15 - Galley is North of York. The new city should be settlerd within two to three turns. Settler in Nottingham in 1, and then the galley will have to come back and pick it and the archer up. Then we can open borders with everyone. No one on the continent should be worst enemies with anyone else, so we should have no problems there. Good luck Gaspar.

you lucky dog! I didn't get iron:(

Huh? We're you playing as the English? I didn't think resources could change on a scenario map like this.
Yep I'm the English, but I see what happened. Your playing on Rye's I'm on a different one. :p
Don't worry though, my games kinda like yours. I have a globe spanning empire except in South america, and Asia, so I have colonies with Iron, and I ttook over part of France, to get more Iron. It helped taking Paris :D :king:

Religion spreads without OB, as we got Buddhism in Nottingham that way. Maybe you were thinking about missionaries, since Isabella tends to spend the entire game spreading her state religion (but will also increase her shrine outcome). If she has never enough boats, she could save us the hassle of spreading the religion ourselves ;)

Religion does spread without it, but it will spread faster with them. If I understand it correctly, a religion is more likely to spread from a city with whom you have a trade route and trade routes come with open borders. Could be wrong though. :crazyeye:

On the difference in maps I had forgotten that this isn't exactly the same map that ships with the game. I knew I had taken civs out, but I didn't even look at, let alone change, resources or there placements. I suppose it's possible they were changed before it was put up for download though.

Pre flight check: Ok so seems goals of my turnset are to let Alphabet come in, and build the copper city and Irish city. That'll be about all that comes in during my set. I also suspect its only a matter of time before Izzy comes calling telling us to convert. I'm hoping not, would really like to have a better lay of whats going on in the rest of the world before I make that call. All of Europe Buddhist tells me we're in trouble as far as warring there.

Anyway, hit enter.

750 BC - Settler in. Start a rax.
725 BC - Hastings founded between the copper and iron. Might have liked to push farther east, but just seemed silly to delay Ireland any longer, and I need that galley.

700 BC - Archer done in York, starts Granary for whip primage.

675 BC - Meet Catherine, who doesn't like us because we've traded with worst enemy Fred. Lib done in London, start Granary. Hire a couple scientists in London to get more GPP, an academy would be divine.

650 BC - Yuck. GP born in London is a merchant. He could discover Metal Casting though. This is a tough decision. I think a trade route is out, no reason to blow that wad this early in the game. Settling him in London is tempting, Metal Casting also tempting since it would virtually assure us Colossus. Metal Casting is 12 turns right now. 6 gold per turn for the rest of the game though. Argh. I decide to let him sit til someone is free to build a forge and make up my after examining the situation then.

(IT) This happens:

I have to say no as Cathy can reach us and I fear Freddie bowing out as soon as we say yes. We're in no position to fight right now. Serves as a warning if we thought we were going to stay out of trouble all game though.

600 BC - Granary done in London and York. York starts a rax. Alphabet is in next turn, I decide to see what the trading possibilities are before making any decisions with our Merchant. Start a placeholder rax.

575 BC - Alphabet in, Nottingham finishes rax starts an archer. Land Archer/Settler pair in Ireland, pop hut, we get barbs. :/

Here's the scouting situation in the East. We're not getting any further by land, I think the next settler needs to push towards Russia by sea, get a city or two in behind Cathy's frontlines.

Tech situation is bleh. The AIs only visibly have Meditation and Polytheism on us. Nobody will trade us Polytheism. I'd recommend holding off on any deals for a bit, we're the definitive tech leader, as there's no n-fers or key techs avail, no reason whatsoever to help the AI catch up for stuff we can research in no time. Decide to settle Harkuf and set research to Metal Casting. I think the gpt this early will make more impact than anything else. Realize I was :smoke: and change Londons rax build to a settler.

550 BC - Archer owns barb war, Iron online. Nottingham finishes archer starts a second Galley. I load our worker in the homeland on a galley to bring him to Ireland to improve the sheep. Parthenon BIFAL. Canterbury founded in Ireland to get all the workable land tiles plus fish from the homeland.

(IBT) Cathy asks us into the war, I decline for the same reasons as Fred. She's now annoyed.

And thats all she wrote. We're first in GNP, first in Production, 2nd in food, first in pop. Interesting times lay ahead.

The save:

I'm not real happy with my turns, but so be it. I think the next move is to make a few forward reaches, but I feel like I played such a lame turnset I'll quiet up otherwise.

Ahh not bad not bad. I really can't see what else you could have done to tell you the truth. Declining the wars was the right thing to do, as both sides could reach us and even if they wouldn't take cities, we can't afford pillaging now.

I'm not so sure about the merchant, I think I might have used him for MC. Settling in the BC's is probably a good move too. As long as we get MC soon, since it seems you're researching it we should, we'll be fine on that point and settling will be the best.

I like the Irish city site. We've managed to do two less cities than I wanted to and still use all the land. Go team! :goodjob: My plan was obviously not optimal.

I think we should convert to Buddhism and spread it around. Better to be on good terms with our closest neighbors for this variant. We won't need to fight them. Our Northern settlements should suffice for that area, and Africa should suffice for the rest of the European longitudes we aren't able to settle.

So Louis has the pyramids? Yet another reason to go after the french... :mischief:
What's the power graph situation? Seeing as Catherine is a Financial/Creative leader and has the great spans of Russia for herself, we can expect she has lots of land (thus, production) already, and she's not too far behind in the tech race, and since she's been at war with ol' freddie, she probably has a lot of soldiers; might be a better idea to annex Louis first, then use HIS cities (and representation for +3 :) population) to pump out the military, use open border through Germany and munch on Russia.
Then afterward, Germany is surrounded with english lands and is easy pickings :D

...but that's just what I'd do ;)

Well, that's a plan. It'd accomplish the variant objective, with just America to settle, and destroy a big foe. It's something to think about, but I want to try to settle as much peacefully as we can. I think it's about time to start sending out those African settling parties as well as possibly trying Gaspar's suggestion to go behind Cathy's lines. I don't know what will be open there, as she might be close to the Mongolians, depending on the settlement patterns of the two. Also distance from capital costs will be prohibitive. I still like the idea though. :)
