Recently, I have been playing alot with the Lanun and I have come to love the great boost to research their pirate coves bring. Originally, I always found Octopus Overlords and went down the religious line and there came to the point where I completely dominated the sea. However I always struggled taking land cities unless I was lucky enough to have them near a lake. So I started testing out different religion, and eventually decided that perhaps, I don't want to play the Lanun, but rather the Infernals and just use the Lanun to summon them.

Why the Lanun?

1) Pirate Coves
Being able to build them early in the game is a huge boon. You basically have a gold mines on water which produces quite a bit of food. This means you can get your research up quickly to steadly make your way to Infernal Pact. Not only this - as I plan to take over this city with the Infernals later on, the pirate coves will remain, providing its hammers and commerce to my new, evil empire.

2) Seafaring
You can see pearl and your boats move faster, cool for the Lanun but doesn't help the Infernals that much, until you realize the the Infernals receive all the technology that their summoner has so you will now have seafaring Infernals. Not much but if you lucky enought to start near pearls you get a free gold mine and you boats will be moving a bit quicker (and you will have a coastal city to build them)

3) Defensibility
Will you food/commerce and production coming from the water, you don't need to worry about improving land tiles. This translates into you not caring about the tons of barbarians marching through your lands. You can sit back behind you walls while they throw themselves at it. This translates into less casualties meaning you don't have to replace them all the time and can focus on other things, such as building wonders for your future Infernal master. Further, as you have a coastal city - and you will be getting Heron's Throne, thats another 25% defence, combine that with a hill and you have the perfect Infernal Capital.

The Plan
Settle near the coast and move warrior to defend it while the scout scouts around. Once settled in a suitable spot, begin researching fishing and building warriors.

Hopefully you should have about 4 warrior before you finish fishing, and then you can start producing fishing boats to get fish/pearls etc... and build pirate coves. Begin researching Ancient Chants - Mysticism

When the boats are done, start creating more warriors just in case (I usually play multilayer games). Another 4 should do. Once mysticism is done, stick in an elder council and have a sage specialist and switch to God King/Religion. Start researching Philosophy - Way of the Wicked.

Now that you have defense, you can start building Heron's Throne followed by Prophecy of Ragnerok. Save the first sage you get to found stigmata or is you are sure you shall get a second one, go ahead and build an academy.

Once Way of the Wicked is done, go ahead and start researching Knowledge of the Ether and Corruption of Spirit. convert to slavery, and watch as the orc horde charging against your wall bows down to you will and have them toll away on your wonders (they are expensive after all)

Eventually, Infernal Pact will be your next choice. Switch away from Slavery before you continue though else the AI will ruin your city before you get to it. Destroy all who get in your way.

Thoughts?

If the Infernals get seafaring, that seems more like a bug then a legitimate tactic, as ONLY the Lanun are "supposed" to get it.

Funny enough, I think the Lanun are the best Hyborem getters. That said, I'm not sure that Hyborem wins faster.

If you need more might, build the guild of the nine.

Yeah, the Lanun are definitely the best at rushing the Infernals. Getting a good city site and then beelining IP only took me 120 turns on normal speed (although a great sage from a lair helped).
