Just finished EDGE 10. Spain. Really fun map. Won a turn 249 domination victory. Thank you Nizef for organizing these save files.
Spoiler Summary :
Settled 4 cities, two on the 2 natural wonders nearby and I used the +4 faith from natural wonders pantheon to generate a super early religion with Pagodas, Holy Warriors and Just War, spawning a quick army with which I took London early (with composites). From then I took Hiawatha's capital with crossbows, which was the tough, as I was fighting Mohawk warriors in the jungles around Onondaga. Just War was key here. Both England and Hiawatha didn't get their own religion so were easy converts to mine. Next I went after nearby Palenque, then the long trek to take Washington (as he built Forbidden Palace). I made friends with Ottomans and nearby Carthage for most of the game. After Washington, I needed to go after Arabia and France as both went with 5 points in Rationalism and were keeping up/staying ahead of me in tech still in the industrial era. I got to Arabia just when I got landships but it was still a tricky fight as he already had flight. Luckily early planes are still too weak against upgraded landships. After this war it was mainly mop-up with tanks, artillery and planes as the rest of civs, were 10 techs behind at this point and I went with Autocracy for Lightning Warfare and Clausewitz's Legacy.

Great to see that you had fun with a map that in my own eyes is a little underrated. I will be bold and recommend some other games as well: #5 with Byzantium (this is a must), #6 with Germany (NWs galore), #11 with Carthage (where the heck are the rest?), #42 with the Mayans (piety challenge in combination with a demanding early game), #72 with Denmark (never had so much fun with a Lakes map before), #86 with America (all the bad boys), #104 with the Celts ("luxury" of fighting both Legions and Impis) and #148 with Sweden (CV speed run).

For fun (and boredom), decided to go back and try these starting at #1. Ive played, but not finished most of them, so let's see how it goes.

EDG1. Turn 298 loss
Spent most of the game in full defense with the Mongols to the north. No real wars throughout. Struggled with gold and culture, missed out on a religion and didnt generate much tourism. I was about 8-9 turns from launching. China and Byzantium both had 5 parts already, but both needed the bottom tech the AI always leaves for last, so I thought I would beat them there. I was 5 or 6 techs clear of them, so no way they could have the science to beat me. That's when I got the "you lose" graphic. Turns out Byzantium's tourism, which I had not been keeping track of, was almost 600 and he got a CV. Had never seen anyone but France or Brazil get one before, so didnt think to check. Not sure if there was anything I could have done late to slow her down.

EDGE23 - t267 dom win. The Russian military production complex was too much for the world to handle. There was some early excitement coming from our close neighbor, but overall it was a fairly comfortable win, although bit tedious at the end. Karakorum and Venice are on the extreme opposite edge of the map, with dozens of crappy Mongolian cities in the way. I love the period of combat after combustion before too many great war bombers are around (when landships with lightning warfare absolutely dominate) AND the period after real bombers/fighters are in play; but that middle space in between is annoying because of the limited range of triplanes and slow movement of AA guns. That's unfortunately the tech period I was in when traversing the large Eastern side of the continent...

Anyway, I started on EDGE5 - and WOWZA! Talk about options and strategies. I think I need a spreadsheet and a flow chart to figure out the optimal religion option selections. Good fun!

EDG 2 Turn 250 quit.

Hadn't lost yet, but didnt see a victory path. I had tried to do a cultural victory, as the start and religion possibilities were really nice. Founded 8 cities, Pagodas and Monastery in all of them. But I think the Piety start held me back, while sacred sites got me plenty of tourism, but I was never able to catch up in science. Shaka was close enough that I had to build a military, but I never voluntarily go to war with him til I pass him in tech.
By turn 250, my religion was great, but Marias was better. She was 6-7 techs ahead of me, and that late in the game, too late to catch up. Poland and Marias culture was too high for me to get the CV, and I was behind in techs, so science and dom were unlikely.
Have 150+ more of these to retry, so wasnt gonna waste the time to see exactly which turn maria won on.

Finished EDG5 with a turn 277 domination win.
Lots of interesting things about this scenario. Went with tradition, then actually finished piety instead of honor, also 3 in rationalism and 8 in autocracy. Tons of faith and culture generation with wine+festivals+monasteries. Hadn't played with Dromons before, they are really strong (used them to take Venice early) and then they upgrade to galleass, frigate, battleship! 4 range + logistics battleships on this map are unstoppable. Enrico was also very considerate when he founded his religion with holy warriors, because that allowed me to buy a land army once I took Venice with the Dromons. Lots of fun air/sea/land battles in this one.

It is time for EDG10. This time the task is to play as Spain on a Terra map. you have six (!) luxuries in range of your capital.
How did I miss this one? Six luxuries!! Takes care of the happiness issue I hate so much about Civ 5, awesome. I am on T245 but I'm going to need to stop here because my computer can't handle the large map this late in the game. And I actually think I have a chance to win despite...
Spoiler :
Hiawatha and Ahmad joint DoWing me a little while ago. I was going strong and was preparing for war with Washington because everyone hated him and he hated everyone. Plus I stole some of his land. Didn't expect it to come from the other two opposing ideological civs.

I found Krakatoa on T4 and Uluru on T8 for a cool grand. Bought a settler and founded first expo next to Uluru. Got first religion on T27, ridiculous! I stole a worker from Dido and decided to stay at war and planned a Galleas rush. Man, Galleas take a long time to get to. Is it better to go for Education first and then Compass even when rushing Galleas'? Because I ended up getting Education shortly after Compass anyway.

Before I got Galleas' Dido came hard with her Quinniremes and I lost Barcelona, my Uluru city, on T105. But I had started building up my Galleas fleet and hit her back and retook it shortly after. She then offered me her closest city, which was also a canal city, so I accepted peace... for the time being, just long enough for me to build my fleet up to proper strength.

When the time came, I thought I might need some help so I asked Washy to go to war with me against Dido and to my surprise he agreed. So he attacked from the east and me from the west. I got Carthage, which is really all I wanted. Washy got some crappy snow cities so I was happy.

When I got Astronomy, I set sail for the new world. Was first to find two more NW and settled them. My Conquistadors settled 4 more colonies and the Spanish civilization was riding high.

Then out of the blue Hiawatha and Ahmad attacked, well DoW, but they didn't really attack because they didn't have that many troops near me. They attacked my CS allies. And their CS allies were more trouble than the two of them combined. Ahmad had like 6 CS allies and they were all coastal so pillaged all of my sea trade routes. I could recover though because I had protected inland sea routes to Washy I could turn to. Would have been a fun game to continue but my computer just won't allow it.

EDG3 loss T 392 . 0-3 on my replays so far

Awful game from the beginning. Both the Incas and England got mad at me for attacking a city state early for some workers. I usually dont pay too much attention to that as the AI rarely goes to war over it, but they both did. I was able to fight them off, but it set me well back tech wise. I finally started to go on the offensive with trebuchets and took 1 Incan city. England had finally fallen back, but now Songhai was building up troops on my border. I decided to pull back and wait for artillery to go for the Incan capital.

Had a decent size military, and had gotten up to #2 in tech when I got artillery online. Took the Incan capital shortly after, and turned towards Songhai. Wanted to be able to choose when we went to war as he was hostile towards me and being provocative, so i dow'd him 1st. Was closing in on his 1st city when disaster struck.

William was the runaway. 1st in tech, land, miliary, gold, etc. His tourism was over 800, and even with a -90 penalty to happiness for being autocracy, was at 175 happiness somehow. We had been friends all game, with a declaration already established when he backstabbed me. I might have been able to fight him off as Askia was happy to make peace and I pulled my troops back, but I didnt have fighters or anti aircraft yet, and his bombers tore Philly to pieces.

Luckily he didnt move towards Washington, so we spent the next few decades making peace, me taking back philly, him retaking it, making peace, etc. By the time I took it back and could defend it, Askia had reformed his army and moved on my eastern front. It was all I could do to fight them both off, but was never able to catch William in tech. Only Poland stopped him from a CV, so it was just a matter of time til he launched,. I was probably 20 turns out myself, so it wasnt really close.

played #161 zulu game and win DomV at 150T
I also record videos of my game
https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV16S4y1k7Lx

Spoiler :

use the standard early warmongering strategy, liberty 3-city rush
using composites + swordsmen, then crossbowmen + longswordsmen
did't use impi because researching civil service is too expensive for warmongering strategy
and the strength of impi is not as good as longswordsman

in my game england build the great wall and become the hardest part of the conquest.
I have all other capitals before 140T and need to wait for London to win the game.

found a religion with interfaith dialogue and asceticism.
Interfaith dialogue is a very good choice in warmonger strategy,
help me reach Machinery and Steel at least 3T earlier.

0-4 in my replays so far. Kind of a weird game. Got off to a slow start, which I expected due to the map description. Eventually Japan picked a fight, and after alot of nothing much going on, I took one of their non capital cities. China went to war with them as well, and managed to wipe them out completely. We were friendly though so things were kinda peaceful for a while.

The other continent was mostly Morocco and Ghengis to split for a while. Diplo was off the table as Ghengis was conquering everyone, and as much as I wanted to try domination, China and Ghengis had militarys that were massive. I kept a force I thought was big enough for defense, and tried to go to space. As Morocco had the tech lead, I bribed Ghengis to go to war with him with me. I liberated Paris (would not have been able to hold it) and a city state, but Ghengis took the rest.

Before long, I had 5 cities (my 4 plus the 1 from Japan). Napoleon had 3 cities. China had the rest of my continent, Ghengis had the entire other one. we were down to 5 CS as Ghengis had the rest. I was stuck into order, which I wish I hadnt done. China and Ghengis were both autocracy. My happiness took a huge spike and I was at -15 or so. Had no choice but to sell the Japanese city to Mongolia for alot of luxuries to save the happiness and have a chance.

What killed me was lack of resources. I had no aluminum to finish spaceship parts (yes, I forgot recycling plants existed) or build rocket artillery, and I had limited oil, so planes and battleships were scarce. I might have been able to fight off china when they backstabbed me, but when Mongolia joined, I called it quits.

EDGE#162: Twin Peaks

I see that you have coped very well without new additions to this series, but decided to add one after all. This time we play as Polynesia on an unmodded Small Continents map with standard size and standard speed. Your inital task is to find two NWs and settle them both and thus you will be able to found a religion. After that you can go in any direction.

My own game was surreal. There were wars all over the place for most of the game but nobody asked what those funny orange guys were doing. I went after a SV for a change and sent the sailors to space on t306. Only 3 AIs survived.

Enjoy!

EDG 5 Turn 283 quit

0-5 now in replays, but not terribly disappointed. I'd beaten this map before, so didnt want to play a science game again. Decided Liberty/domination was the plan. This seemed to be going well initially as I took Kiev and Venice with mostly Dromons and Catapults. Guess I was too greedy though cause the whole world attacked at once. Forgot about that penalty for eliminating a civ completely.

Reloaded before the attack and went around Kiev to just take Venice. This went easier. I was then able to move on the Mayan capital. Took longer as the ships couldnt really get involved, but I took it eventually, along with 1 other city. Left him two cities on the coast. By now Venice had taken another CS, so I was able to go get Kiev.

William and I had been off and on at war for years as he was mad I beat him to the city for the GBR. I had 9 cities built, plus 4 conquered so far. My plan once battleships were up was to attack william, then move on ethipia and spain before dealing with Ghengis. Problem was, they all beat me to it.

William attacked first. NO biggie, I was going there anyway. But then ethiopia attacked. an annoyance mostly, but they had 2 cities on my continent, so I had to leave troops behind. Then Pacal attacked. Again, this meant leaving troops behind I would need for William. Isabella stayed out of it, so I thought Id be OK, but then Ghengis attacked. For about 20 turns, I didnt see any of his troops, so I thought it was one of those, I'll join the war but stay out of it, situations. But then a bunch of battleships showed up near my west coast, when most of my navy was in the east/south by william. Held off for a while, but it was ultimately a losing effort.

I think I'd get it next time if I replayed, but with so many more to replay and new maps posted (plus you know, life in general to deal with), have to take the L and move on

EDGE 163: Canals

Here is an England Pangea scenario. Standard speed, standard size.

Although this is a Pangea, you have a fairly isolated coastal start, and also ways to take advantage of England's sea prowess, through smart use of canal cities.

My own game I won on turn 268 with a dom victory. Due to shape of the pangea between water and mountains 4 of the eight civs (you included) are in more isolated locations, and 4 are in a bloodbath scenario. I think carefully "managing" the wars/politics of the AIs in the bloodbath scenario is key to winning this because you don't want one of them to be a runaway.

Can we be so bold as to add our own entries in this series?

I definitely welcome new additions. Could I ask you to add the next available EDGE number (163 at the moment) and a short description of the settings and your own game? It will help future players to find their way in this thread.

Edited. Does that look fine?

EDG 7 Turn 326 SV.

Never finished EDG6. got a bit sidetracked and lost track of it. when i got back around to playing, figured id move on to 7. we'll call that one a draw.

For this game, tried to get my still elusive first deity CV, but Indonesia beat me to virtually every Wonder I wanted. was always just a couple turns behind. I thought my culture output was good, had Moai everywhere I could, but the tourism just wasnt getting high enough. Had to build a 5th city off continent just to get a reliable source of Iron to build a Navy, but iron and oil were short all game long, making it hard for me to go offensive with just boats. Better players than me Im sure would easily find a way around that problem.

Had to audible to science as I realized I wasnt gonna get the CV and didnt want to continue the losing streak. It became rough late as I got hit with a massive happiness penalty for being Freedom. Everyone else was split order/auto, so happiness tanked, but i kept it above 0 long enough to matter.

Carthage attacked late, but I had a decent enough navy to put off any real threats. 1-5-1 so far on the replays. Next is an Arab map that isnt even listed as EDG, so we'll see how that goes.

Hello dear friends,

After thinking about it for a while, I have now taken the decision not to add more games into this thread. Real life things are more appealing for now and I think that Deity is not anymore the puzzle it once was for me.

I want to thank you all for your interest in this thread and all valuable hints and tips you have provided each other and me. If there will be a Civ7 and if it is anything like Civ5, you can probably count on me to return to our eternal journey through time. Despite the troublesome times in the real world, I hope you all will have an enjoyable spring & summer.

Yours truely,

Nizef
