G-Minor 78

Nothing special, but I finished. 1580 AD. Learned a lot about this type of win, and the new Mod, and got some Quatro stuff filled in, so it's all good.

I just finished 1388. Not spectacular but better than my first attempt. I waited until T34 to settle. I had the whole map revealed: 7 settlers, 3 workers, 1 warrior, 4 scouts, 2000 gold. I had all my units merge on the opposite side of a inland sea and just settler all around most of the AI. My biggest problem was that after about 300 turns I got bored but was doing well enough that I wanted to finish. That was the point that I automated the workers and stop MM the cities. Oh well. Time for the new school year anyway!

I played this twice more the past two days:

1) Popped 11 settlers (!!!), but had a comedy of errors, such as:
-two cities were settled too far from capital :( -> too slow research early
-accidentally accept Washington's request to be a vassal...when I was building up my force of knights to take him out :cry:
-not watch my capital's queue, forget that I was chopping, and finish oracle 3 turns before paper is done :mad:
gave up that one

2) Pop 9 settlers, but the real key here was when I warrior-rushed Carthage...which had 4 resources, a lake, and 15 forests! Now I see how powerful NE+NP is (even for non-philosophical).
I also held my first golden age until NP was done (usually I would use the GA from music earlier for anarchy-free switching). Thus I started my golden ages at the right time. Ended up with 805 AD.

I have a had decent first try after lots of map and civ changes and regenerating the map. I played the Dutch and althoguht I didn't have 50+ cities, I thought I did alright. I certainly don't have the patience for marathon. I know: 30 Turns after the launch!! :eek:

I got a little sloppy and complacent and wanted to improve and either I got sweet maps but crap luck with the huts or loads of settlers, but horrible resources layout. I had one game with 8 settlers and 2-3 workers from huts and some decent city sites. I took out a few capitals with 2-3 warriors, but the 40% culture in India's capital did me in. I couldn't make peace, when into strikes from a drawn out war -- with NO troops out of the borders -- and ruined a perfectly awesome start.

I am moving tonight/tomorrow morning and won't have another chance, I would not have had the patience to try and improve, so I hope I stay in 4th. :D

I am guessing that after a few good starting cities, the location of the others does not matter if you want around 40 or more cities, right? Lots of overlap too? I liked William's cultural borders from the start. It sucked trying to hook up copper or stone with Germany....you really want Stonehenge it seems. The dikes on a lakes map was nice. I also tried India's fast worker for uncovering more terrain and huts, but I don't think it really mattered. I know I could improve, but like I said am happy with the achievement.

A fun gauntlet.

No entry from me this time :(. After so long at not playing, some things I just forget, and how to do a space victory is one of them. I just didn't have the time for a third go after my first two attempts were shown to be horrible. So what I'm doing instead is trying out Future and Modern starts. Too many of my games fall apart in the middle ages and I never get practice in modern times. I'm hoping that the practice with advanced starts will make that part of my game stronger. So far just time victories, which are actually competitive on the HOF table. I'll soon practice a space victory which unfortunately won't be competitive.

And I thought I could actually win a Gauntlet on my first try. Good job ShannonCT!

Sorry. Didn't mean to take it from you at the last minute. I didn't have time to play this one until last night and today.

There's always the next one. :)

Congrats ShannonCT and narri. I didn't have time to finish my second game. On pace to break 300k and possibly 800AD. Close. Any one declare war on an AI and have an enemy warrior waltz into your undefended GPF? I did in my current game! Fortunately it looks like my luck is in as the last scientist arrives just in time for back-to-back GAs. Shortly after another city should produce a GE. Good thing my GPF isn't swamping it. I think the AI did me a favor.

Map Notes: Current game as Darius with seafood highlands. I didn't think I did his financial traits much justice in my first game (no seafood) as things went too specialist midway. So this game I have nice water finance and on land I "puddle jumped" and built lots of wind mills.

That happened on one of my early attempts (well, not my GPF, but still annoying). That made me learn to do the following before declaring war:
1)select the show military button above the mini-map
2)zoom out to world-view
3)click "All Military" where the scores are usually
4) Inspect for the color of the person I'm going to attack.

@narri
Did those! I misread the color of the AI unit. At any rate, my last attempt at this is now at the point where a win date can be established: 825 AD. Even with an engineer coming I don't think I have any magic with the space elevator. It will take me 2-3 turns to tech and at best can save only 4 turns. That means 810 AD is possible only through some miracle. But 300k is easy so I am currently debating whether to finish as soon as possible or rack up as much score as I can.

Funny this game. I popped 12 settlers, 2 workers and 2 scouts before any gold. Was @ -1 gold and wondering if I would lose settlers due to strike!

@ShannonCT
Looked over the log to your game. Evidently a starting warrior in your hands is a lethal weapon! Two AIs eliminated by turn 20? ShannonCT must be playing!

Edit: Double checked my count. The years change to 5yr increments at 500 AD not 750 AD like I thought. That means I just found 25 turns or a win date of 700 AD. Long live Darius! Checking again to make sure... But it will take me 6-8 hours to finish even after I launch the ship. BLAH!

Good job if that's true (I rely on turn counters rather than years, so I don't know).

@narri
Thanks. My game continues. Just finished the main challenge of the space race. 14 turns of pure torture. Played for space elevator magic and got it. Great engineered and chopped it all in. I was ready to switch to US and plunk down like $12 to finish it. The last chop came through. Lesson: lumbermills on plains hills can be converted to mines in a pinch. My last golden age ends in 10 turns and the one engine will finish in twelve. Mining it's pigs to see if it helps. Also have lumbermills on hills to work with too. (I still don't believe you can chop space ship parts.)

Alas I am mildly worried about one thing. Saving on the end of turn can be dangerous if you then study things like city management. Easy to invalidate a game if you are not careful. You haven't done a thing except tweak cities and its too easy to exit the game and take a break. Oops. Don't think I did this but am not sure. Even though the gauntlet is no longer winnable, I can bump ShannonCT off the front page of the HoF. Not every day you can do that. (And to be able to say that ShannonCT's record lasted only two weeks ... priceless.)

515 AD and 12 turns to completion discounting the end of my GA. Expected win date in now clear: 725 AD. My goal was to knock 30 turns off 880 AD and this is 31 turns. A little breathing room. And what, 10 more hours of game play? Blah!

135 workers and STILL building more!!!!!

ALMOST forgot. I looked at your game log too. Your style of play is very similar to mine. I like it.

Lift off 565 AD. Projected win date: 715 AD. Shaved 3 turns off 1 engine. I need rest.

iggy

One reason I chose Lizzy was for the warrior. I tried Darius a few times and didn't like having to rely on luck to pop a warrior. Taking out AI quickly means more huts for me. Also, the Organized trait is not as useful on low difficulties where maintenance is low. Philo really shines with the low tech cost.

As much as I don't want to play settler games, I might have to show you who's boss.

And I may have to move up to deity.

Seriously, This gauntlet is the first time I've tried corps. Want to try sushi badly. Highlands maps aren't suitable for it. Currently, I have +20 from Cereal and +35 from mining. Just found a 3-metal and 1-grain site too. If you have patience for a work force of 168 (and growing), Highlands is a good map for slow speed.
