I played this twice more the past two days:
1) Popped 11 settlers (!!!), but had a comedy of errors, such as:
-two cities were settled too far from capital
-> too slow research early
-accidentally accept Washington's request to be a vassal...when I was building up my force of knights to take him out
-not watch my capital's queue, forget that I was chopping, and finish oracle 3 turns before paper is done
gave up that one
2) Pop 9 settlers, but the real key here was when I warrior-rushed Carthage...which had 4 resources, a lake, and 15 forests! Now I see how powerful NE+NP is (even for non-philosophical).
I also held my first golden age until NP was done (usually I would use the GA from music earlier for anarchy-free switching). Thus I started my golden ages at the right time. Ended up with 805 AD.
