Which would you rather see in your starting BFC? Assume equal numbers of each for comparison purposes, and 2 food sources also present in the BFC.

As I see it, Gems have the advantage: In unmodded BTS, they arrive on Grassland, meaning that they can feed themselves. Gold has the extra +1 :commerce:, but comes on Plains or Desert Hills, for 0 food. Working Gold in the early game often stunts the growth of your capital.

Again as I see it, the downside to Gems (aside from 1 fewer :commerce: than Gold) is situational: Gems usually are found in Jungle-rich areas. Even though your capital’s BFC should be Jungle-free, you might have trouble finding good sites for subsequent cities if the immediate neighbourhood is Jungled.

I prefer Whales. If I control them, I have better chances to protect them from avid hunters.

Gold > Gems (in 98% of the cases) .

Because:

Having gems, almost garantuees having started near the jungle (Gold anyhow appears in the medium northern and southern part of the map, therefor the sites of city 2 + 3 + x often yield huge amounts of Forrests) .

Gold gives Hammers in a time, where the Happy-cap is low, so it's not possible to whip endlessly. The early units are cheap, so mainly 1pop-whips or 2pop-whips at most, and having a good source of food, will cause the city growing into unhappiness. With Gold, it's a lot easier to produce the same amounts of units, without the city getting  .

Gold speeds up some wonders. It was Shwedagon Paya if I remember.

Whales make your casinos more profitable.

Yup, count me in on the Moby Dick parade as well.

It's such a huge advantage in starting with bonus commerce resources vs not. A mod idea I had was to have improvements like resource mines grow the same way as cottages; so a gold mine would start at 2:commerce: and grow as you worked it.

I'm concerned some of the responses in the thread might not match what the poll is asking--it's asking about whether all tiles being equal, would you rather have gold or gems. While the discussion about jungle proximity is interesting, it's not quite what the poll is digging at.

The answer on that obviously is "it depends" :>

Gold is stronger in the beginning and allows for more Food. In a food poor scenario however, Gems probably would be prefered by most.

My personal answer to that question would btw. be "both" :> .

I hope you're not losing sleep over this!

Perhaps it's just my luck, but where I have Gold, I usually get Desert, too... which is worse than Jungle IMO.

Gold spawns in desert, which can't be improved. But if you're lucky, there will be flood plains near the gold.

Gems spawn near or in jungle, which can be chopped to get nice green land to improve.

Whales make your casinos more profitable.

I just wanted to say, that I don't understand this.

I neither own a casino, nor would I know how a whale would make it more profitable.

Would be nice if someone could explain to me how this is / was ment.

Whales are traditionally heavy gamblers.

"Casino whales are the big money gamblers that spend huge amounts of cash on a single bet and are often found in Las Vegas casinos and online casinos."- casinowhale dot net

2nd result from Google search 'whale casino'.

And it was meant as a joke.
