How do you see what current tile holds?

I had no idea how to search for this...but how can you see, at the very beginning of the game for instance, what is on that particular tile you are standing on? I don't want to waste a turn moving around just to see it!

There is no way to see what you tile you're on, but you CAN predict it. If you're near desert and rivers; it's most likely a desert square. If you're near forests and grasslands; it's most likely a grassland or forest square. You can though, see if you're on a hill because it's elevated. A resource will never spawn under you, so don't worry about that.

What happens if you build a city on top of a resource?

You don't gain bonus from that resource, so it's best avoided.
