I tried to google this answer but no response, sorry about this.

In Civ V...it was important for all cities to connect to the Capital and there was a triangle symbol below the city names to indicate a trade route had been establish.

I'm wondering if all cities HAVE to connect to capital in Civ IV? How do I know if all my cities have been connect to the capital? I tried to build a road to it but there's no symbol so I can't confirm if it does or not.

Also...if I have City B built next to a river...and i build a ROAD from my capital (which is located inland) connecting to the river...will the road automatically connect as a trade route to City B?

You need to connect all cities to the trade network, there's a small :traderoute: symbol over the city name if it's connected. Resources also needs to be connected to the trade network in Civ4.

Rivers and coast need sailing to act as roads outside cultural borders.
