Gene Pitney's "The man who shot liberty vallance" trumps both.

( )

I voted Marley

I suspect the sherrif shot the "sheirref", because he was a badly-misspelled imposter.

EDIT: You don't even want to know what he did to the sherrief.

The Clapton version.

the bob marley version

Eric Clapton, obviously.

Now there's a man with excellent taste.

The best version of "I Shot the Sheriff" that I ever heard was performed in a basement bar in Troy, New York by three local musicians that you've almost certainly never heard of. This was probably also influenced by my being young, single, and buzzed.

Another side note: the Eric Clapton version was at Top 40 hit when my brother and I were kind of young, and although we couldn't understand all the lyrics, we used to love singing "I shot the sheriff... but I didn't shoot the deaf-o-beans."

She sings it??!!!??!?!?!
It was in the "Behind the Laughter" episode, where it was teling what the members of the Simpsons did after the group broke up. Marge had a lounge act where she sung the song, with a chorus of guys in cowboy outfits chanting "She didn't do it! She didn't do it!" Then Marge says something like--

Marge: So the next time you see a sheriff, shoot him!

Audience: (Gasp)

Marge: A smile!

Audience: Awwww...(claps)

You can fool some people some times
but you can't fool all the people all the time
so now we see the light, we gonna stand up for our rights

I know it was from get up, stand up but it was just to show that Bob Marley and the Wailers are hard to beat.
